This program allows you to create a 'virtual' PC that you can install any OS on, with 100 percent compatibility (says MS).

I'm currently toying with MS-DOS 7.10 and playing one of my favourite DOS games, Crystal Caves. I wish I still had my Windows 98SE disk, I'd try that aswell.

Heres a very nice review of the program if you want to learn more about it:
http://www.elitebastards.com/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=75&Itemid=27

So far I'm impressed, I had MS-DOS installed is less then 5 mins. No hassles or reboots, besides 'virtual' ones, and the speed is better then any other emulator. Crystal Caves was running full speed with sound.

.... Virtual PC on a PC....

I see the uses, but it still seems really, really stupid.

Oh man, I need to remember to bring back X-Wing, TIE Fighter, Wing Commander et al when I go home in a couple of weeks. This is wonderful.

We are going to use it to play old dos games. But I used it a lot when I was working on a CarPC project so I wouldn't have to keep rebooting to get to my development environment and then to test it.

You think it'd run "Crusader: No Remorse?" I tried running it on DosBox, but it lagged like hell.

EDIT: Does the question mark go on the inside or the outside?

I always preferrd VMware. I tend to have a spare copy of XP installed with a snapshot at a clean install. No more 30 day trials for me :P

You can run DOS and Win 3.x for older games and apps, as well as Linux. And it runs on OS/2 which some people could find useful.

People, for DOS games, try DosBox first. It's a lot simpler and doesn't involve a whole virtual PC.

There are some addon(s) for VPC that are supposed to enhance video and sound performance, those are worth a look for gaming. VMWare Server is similar and free too.

I want to install windows 98, but I can't since my hard drives are all NTFS. :(
2006-07-13, 12:10 PM #12
Make a partition thats not NTFS? Or try Virtual PC.

I tried to install win98 by creating a win98 virtual machine (complete with virtual hard drive) , but windows 98 setup won't continue b/c it can't detect any non-ntfs hard disks.

I don't like messing with partitions, either, since winxp uses my complete hard disk-- resizing it is just asking for trouble.
2006-07-13, 1:42 PM #14
You must be doing something wrong then, because obviously DOS doesn't support NTFS, yet it installed fine for me.

You shouldn't be using quotes at all.

Nobody was willing to answer Koobie's edited-in question. :gbk:

Um... yeah. Anyway... In this case, it's not a part of the original name/quote, so the question mark is placed on the outside of the quotation marks.

Hurray for the virtualization wars!!!!

Say anything, this is actually great for users. We have multiple companies (and OSS) attempting to secure market share through free "entry level" products and hoping that these "entry level" users will translate into "High level" sales...

Ultimately this all means just one thing... FREE TOYS! :D

And can I run Virtual PC inside Virtual PC inside my Regular OS?
I had a blog. It sucked.

I'm sure it's coded not to do that. But you can run virtual PC inside VMWare in your real PC. ;)

But I still have Win98. :D

In fact, this is CRAZY-COOL!!! I'm installing Win98 right now while I'm typing! That's messed up!

As has been mentioned (and blatantly ignored) before, Day of the Tentacle, Fate of Atlantis, Full Throttle, and the first two Monkey Island games work perfectly in ScummVM. Also, Zloc_Vergo, believe it or not, it's actually spelled "finally."
