Do you guys like the forum "feature" where it shows a preview of...
2006-07-17, 8:43 AM #1
Do you guys like the forum "feature" where it shows a preview of the thread content when you're hovering your mouse over the thread list? I think it's annoying and I want to take it out, but I want to see what others think first.
2006-07-17, 8:43 AM #2
I love it. Don't take out my baby! It makes it easy to see if a thread is worth reading.
2006-07-17, 8:44 AM #3
I never use it and I don't really care about it.
2006-07-17, 8:44 AM #4
I've noticed it; i've never thought of using it though. Seems pointless to me.

I find it useful. Ironically, I used it on this thread.

I use it sometimes, but it's annoying when I click a thread to read, and it appears while loading the thread, usually of an unrelated thread. I have to keep my mouse moving to stop it.

I find it very annoying. Maybe if there was a button to hover instead it wouldn't be so bad.
2006-07-17, 9:16 AM #8
I say keep it. It enables me to weed out the 9/10 worthless threads in half the time.
2006-07-17, 9:22 AM #9
I like it. It is very useful like others have already mentioned.
No sig.

i also vote to remove the thread starter links to thier profiles under the thread title. it bugs me when i'm using a crappy mouse and miss the title and a new window pops up with someones profile i dont care about.

These forums need more stupidity, so I voted for "keep the stupid feature."

I use it all the time. I even used a Firefox extension to make the preview longer at one point.

Use it all the time, there are quite a few threads which I don't really have an interest in but thread titles are nearly always ambiguous, hovering makes it easy to decide.
2006-07-17, 10:16 AM #17
How about if I change the hover to only affect the actual thread title instead of the entire table cell? Would that be a good compromise?
2006-07-17, 10:22 AM #18
That would be spot on my leader.

Nuke it! Sometimes it doesn't vanish and it sticks on screen. Annoying.

I find it very useful.

I like getting a preview to decide whether or not I should bother opening the thread.
Keep it please :)

I don't like it. Very occasionally, it won't refresh and will show the wrong preview to the thread.

I think that would be the best.

I really love this feature. I always catch myself on other forums hovering the mouse button over the title till I remember that it doesn't have this feature.

And all who have technical problems with it just have ****ty browsers.
Sorry for the lousy German

Same here. I find more annoying that helpful. The preview tends to stay on the screen and cover up the links to other threads.

the only thing i think is stupid about these forums, is you have to "click one of the quick reply icons in one of the posts above to activate quick reply". i say you should be able to start typing in it without clicking one of the quick reply buttons, like many of the other forums i go to, and the quick reply icons will still just zoom you down to the bottom of the page.

So Firefox is a ****ty browser, Impi?
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

yeah, but as soon as you post again, you'll lose it. :p

I imagine the bandwidth cost and server performance hits of retrieving the first post of every thread in the forum and uploading it every time someone checks the forum index isn't worth whatever utility the feature might have.

Yeah exactly. Find myself constantly leaving the mouse in the tiny blank left-hand margin just to avoid this happening.

Just make it a user preference.

A user preference but just on the link itself rather than cell!

But just the link..:)

I love that feature, in fact I used it for this topic just now.

I lurve it. Now when I go to other silly forums on the internet which don't have this feature (and I have yet to see one that does), I get kinda annoyed.

I find having it pull off some cached posts from the cache table would be a lot faster than pulling an entire thread down along with related included files for display as each member goes thru threads that they don't necessarily want to read.
