Stupid Valve. First they master the FPS genre, now they're mastering current innovation on fps's. (yes that's debatable :P)

Saw this the other day. Completely amazing.
2006-07-19, 5:39 PM #4
That's pretty cool. Technically speaking it's nothing amazing (although the Valve fanboys will rave about it for months and months), but it's a pretty clever idea. I bet it's lifted from some 60's sci-fi.

I liked HL, and I liked HL2, but HL2 was just more of HL. There wasn't much new. Sure, the gravity gun, but it gets old. This will get old, too. Granted, everything does...but something like a sword and melee combat system that tightly integrated with a modern physics engine to provide limitless combinations of battles wouldn't get old too easy. It's within the current level of PC technology, but no one seems to want to program anything that cool. Imagine a JK game like that. Sigh.

Why would you even post something this stupid?

generally though, i dont understand what makes prey so interesting, its another run of the mill FPS games, with teleporters and occasional anti-gravity sections, seems a bit gimmicky to me.
2006-07-19, 5:51 PM #9
That's possibly one of the coolest concepts I've ever seen. I'd pay 50 dollars for that demonstration right there. THAT'S no gimmick like that damn gravity gun.

Nope. Valve saw the guys who made this and hired them to work on Portal. :P

Thats amazing and would never get old for me.

That portal gun is pretty cool idea but the whole portal bit where you can see through it isn't really new. Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament both had the same technology. Elite Force also used the portal effect as camera displays.

The amazing part is the innovation that portals can be used for. Dropping portals after portals to accomplish different tasks would be immortally awesome. Think about all of the fun 2D puzzle games there are: A totally 3D one is simply perfect.

I love the bit how you can make a portal at your feet and then fall through and make another portal below, making you fall almost forever. Makes me wonder if all that falling would build up enough velocity to kill you if you stop making the portals and just land :)

if you want to, before Valve bought it, there was this cool concept game called Narbacular Drop.

I like the voice. It's mean and creepy. "If at first you don't succeed, you fail. And the test will be terminated."
It's also set in the HL Universe, most likely in a US prison or military base before the Resonance Cascade and 7 Hour War.
Someone pointed something interesting out, along those lines. This game is all about teleportation, you even have a teleport gun. Someone else in the HL Universe has a teleport gun. And the initials formed by the name of said gun are A SHPD. Coincidence?

-Probably.

Actually, since the guys now work for Valve... you could say that they did create it themselves.

Plus, no one's busted out with any Valve-fanboyism. The concept is amazing, the demo is very cool. Doesn't matter where the original idea came from.

The story was originally somewhat of a rip off of DooM, if you look at it. But I was just talking about those, the textures (photoraping yay) and that's it. The level design wasn't fantastic, the gameplay wasn't fantastic, the story's nice, but not anything overly engaging, the facial expressions is neat but I think I remember them saying they got that from some other company, could be wrong, the animation is all motion capture, iirc.

But the difference between your post and my post is that most of your list would be more opinionated details.

I also hate to break it to you, but I was talking about things like visual effects, not how the levels look when lit.

Except for the characters like the G-Man and the Vortigaunts. While the story isn't the next NY Times bestseller, it still is a good story.

Given that this article lists the facial expression system as properietary, it's likely that it was developed by Valve. And, even if it is all motion capture, the animation, combined with the facial expressions is still quite high-quality.

Ha ha, wait. You think sequences like this are to the credit of Quake 1 & 2?

Valve makes amazing artwork, but the Source engine is still a pile of crap.

Many of us (and possibly but not necessarily myself) have seen the source code for it. It's Quake 1 plus Havok plus the 3D Studio MAX shader designer.
2006-07-19, 10:26 PM #27
I'm pretty sure the facial animation system was ripped from somewhere, you can actually download the basic utility I believe.

No I haven't. I like Doom 3, but I don't "favor" it over HL2--as a total. Unfortunately 90% of the content comes from mods. Also, that was why I said "it's all opinion". I would have to be somewhat biased.

They can legally say that. Technically they did. But that part of they got absorbed after they saw the software. Legally, they would not be bound to say "When blah blah blah made it".

Get over yourselves. Nothing is ever original anymore. All companies steal ideas from other companies and give them major face-lifts. It's called REVERSE ENGINEERING.

Valve may have developed a facial expressions system but you can hardly credit them with the idea. The original source of facial animations is debatable, as Unreal Engine 1.5/2.0 seem to have a basic system but then again major animation companies have been doing it well before it caught on in games.

I'm looking forward to portals because it's been a while since I've played a good puzzler.

Unreal Championship 2 did a good job with sword/melee combat, especially with the unique character moves/attacks. Pity though it was restricted to the Xbox.

No one's saying that Valve came up with facial expressions in games. It's the implementation that's being debated.

The design/look of the portal gun rocks, btw.
2006-07-19, 11:30 PM #36
What Valve did was take Paul Ekman's FACS software and implement it to work in their game. Yeah, they got the basic idea and algorithms from the professor, but they made it work (and quite well I think).

You could say similar things about most moderm FPS games. I'm assuming the biggest ripoff that you're referring to is compiling maps in BSPS, which many other games like Quake 3/4 and Doom have done.

I will admit that modding the Source Engine, or even just mapping, can be a major pain in the ***. If I had a dollar every time I got a stupid or cryptic error in Hammer....
