Dark Messiah of Might and Magic Demo
2006-08-08, 4:30 PM #1
Alright, Arkane (ubisoft) have just released a single-player demo of their upcoming Dark Messiah of Might and Magic game. Its a medieval fantasy first-person melee/shooter set in the world of Might and Magic and running off a modified version of the source engine. I'm personally really looking up to this game.

The demo itself isn't very long considering the massive size of the download (1.5gb). It contains one tutorial level and a tech demo level where you fight orcs on suspended houses in the mountains. You get to a location where there is a cyclops but the demo ends there.

I'm going to post my opinion on it once I've played it more.

Download at filefront

Its also available at gamespot.com.

Edit : One thing I'm looking forward to with excitement is the multiplayer itself. Medieval Battlefield game ftw :D

Combat needs getting used too. Especially if you've played Oblivion. Its rather stiff, and I find myself constantly holding the block button, which cancels your attack even in midswing so its annoying to me. Still, its awesome to bash your opponent's defense open and crush a powerful kick into his chest. Or even better fighting orcs on a ledge and picking up a box and hurling it at his face, throwing him over the edge.

I'm going to try magic and stealth tonight.

The demo is very very short though, but offers some fun combat. Since there are so many ways to be your enemies (and you can have various skills (bow, sword, magic, stealth, and more)) it enhances replayability :)

I'm using it to get used to the combat system

The combat is far better than Oblivion's.
2006-08-09, 8:19 AM #9
Oh it definatly is. I just have oblivion's crappy combat still branded into my reflexes

Archery I more or less enjoy for the fact that the enemies barely recoil when they get his. At least the few that I did hit

I heard they're doing coop.

If they aren't though, I'm sure someone will mod it in within a couple of months.

The videos I've watched on Gamespot look pretty cool, like being picked up and hurled by an orc, the blood staying on your sword, and slow-motion slaying.

Question: can you create your own character in this (demo or full game)? Or is it preset? I don't have enough time to download the demo today to find out.
2006-08-09, 9:01 AM #14
I don't know. As far as I've seen, its a first person shooter with a few rpg elements. Don't expect open ended gameplay and the chance to create and dress your character. He's a set character with a voice.

As for the skills, I have not seen anything along the lines of strength, dex, etc. Merely skills like

"Melee Combat Level 1,2,3" "Archery level 1,2,3"

Oh...

When it comes out, lets make a mod.

OH, and I had an idea for an Oblivion mod.

EVIL DEAD: THE MOD.

You could base it off of the third movie, even have the traveling bits and other kingdoms and stuff.

And of course... BOOM STICK SKILL LEVEL.

Oblivion is dying a slow painful death. I advise against any mods for that game. Its a serious waste of time.

In my case, I'm going to save my energies and ideas for either NWN2 or Dark Messiah.

I've been hurled around by an orc. Its awesome. Blood does stay on your blade.

The character is preset and he is named Serith. What you can change are his skills.

JK has died several slow painful deaths, and people still edit it. :P
2006-08-09, 10:17 AM #19
I also think editing JK is a worthless waste of time. No one plays your levels or mods anymore. And frankly the oblivion engine flat out sucks. The scripting is so badly limited that you find yourself spending hours to find a work around to something that should have been available through a simple script line. I've lost patience with it.

Brush engines ftw.

Dude, I'm sold on this game.

After I kicked someone into a wall of spikes and they STUCK I was sold.

But that wasn't enough, I threw a jar of oil at this one guy. Then used that fire power.. man did he light up!

HAHAHA, you know that little in the mountain part towards the end? Well I used that ice spell on the ground near the edge of the landing. And went in and had them chase me out.

Only to watch both of them slip and fall to their deaths.

Yea that happened to me too.

I love how the orcs use traps on you too. One game I cut the rope to that tied lamp which crashed on the deck and threw the orc to his death. The next game I was trying to trick him into slidding off that deck with the freeze spell but I was tricked when he used that same lamp trap and sent me to my death. ;_;

I chased one in that building and he cut the rope on that like... bundle of spikey lumber trap.

All I could do was watch as it swung down into me and killed me.

Wrong.

Its a first person shooter (with swords), not an open-ended role-playing game like Oblivion. You have a preset character named Serith, you cannot create your own.

You can, though, set your character's skills to be a warrior type, wizard type, or assassin type, and each are fun the play. The storyline will most likely be linear, a la Hexen, I would guess.

Ah. Oh well, still sounds hella fun. I just wish the demo was on Steam.

It looks awesome. Can't wait to play the demo.
I remember playing the "Heroes of Might and Magic 3" demo constantly for about a year and never ever beating it before the clock ran out. Hah. Legends of Might and Magic was fun too, getting to play as a warrior, a magic user, an assassin, etc etc like in this.

-And combat here looks way awesome. Seriously. The FoV looks a little wonky, but HL2's the same way and I'm fine with that. I also like the DBZ-esque magic animations, and the ka-raaaaazy dagger moves. I wonder if you can use shields. Or other dual weapons.

You can use shields but not dual weapons.

I'm a big fan of the Might and Magic world myself having played the old-school party RPG Might and Magic I to VI.

Hey, it says the file is not a valid win32 application. What gives?
I wanna play, dammit.

-{EDIT} Never mind, I figured it out. I half-downloaded it last night then stopped because I didn't have enough time. I was trying to run that 50% file instead of the real one, which had a (2) after the name. Oops.

Alrighty, with bit of messing arounds with my video driver settings, I can now run Dark Messiah maxed out at 1600x1200, 4xAA, 16xAF, HDR, and graphic settings on high.

The game simply looks outstanding, save perhaps for the annoying Dark Vision which is just too flat. I wish they'd done something more along the line of Riddick's vision. As is, its just a ripoff from Oblivion's Night Eye down to the very color code. Hopefully it'll be editable through some shader or another once the game is out.

I really like the distance blurring effect and the heat source blurring effect.

In terms of graphics, this game is a true beauty. The texturing is marvelous, and the characters powered by source are just phenomenal.

With these new effects, I find myself loving the source engine more and more.

OK, this is a little bit combination of stuff I found elsewhere mixed with some stuff I figured out on my own. And, it's 7AM and I'm running on no sleep so excuse the incoherency.

Create a new text file called "myconfig.cfg" in your "C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Dark Messiah of Might and Magic Demo\mm\cfg" folder. In this file, write:

bind "F1" "mm_npc_create_orc_sword_shield"
bind "F2" "mm_npc_create_goblin"
bind "F3" "mm_npc_create_cyclope"
bind "F4" "mm_npc_create_Phenrig"
bind "F5" "mm_npc_create_human_guard_bow"
bind "F6" "mm_npc_create_undead"
bind "F7" "mm_npc_create_wizard"
bind "F8" "exec myconfig.cfg"
bind "F9" "god"
bind "n" "noclip"
bind "[" "map_warrior e3_l06_l09"
bind "l" "mm_player_add_skillpoints 20"
bind "q" "mm_player_add_adrenaline 100"
bind "mouse3" "ent_remove"
bind "mouse4" "ent_text"
bind "r" "CreateHairball"
bind "t" "give weapon_mm_staff_wood"
g_ragdoll_maxcount 200
arrow_unlimited 1
mm_player_stamina_megasprint_cost_per_second 0
ent_messages_draw 1
developer 1
mm_player_skills_grosbill 1

Save it, and close it. Now, right click on the shortcut to the demo, and choose properties. In the target box, after what's in there already, add " +sv_cheats 1 +map_warrior e3_l06_l09 +exec myconfig.cfg" (no quotes)

Now, this is going to do a few things. You can look at the config file and take some guesses. Basically, F1-F7 spawn NPC's wherever you're looking, some you wouldn't even normally see in the game. You can have your fun spawning them, killing them, watching them fight amongst themselves. F8 will reload the config file, so if you alt tab and change something you can reload your changes right away. You've got god mode (invincibility) on F9, noclip (fly through walls) on n, and [ will reload the map. L will give you 20 more skill points, and Q will fill your adrenaline bar for quick power moves.

If you've spawned too many entities, mouse3 will delete them. Just be careful with that, if you start deleting random stuff it can crash. Mouse4 brings up a useful info box about the entity you're looking at. R, well, it's odd. Try it for yourself.

T is set to give you a weapon that's not in the demo, and is carried by the wizard. It also has a cool new power move you should try.
