Washingtonian: Is there a pop machine in this venue? I am truly parched.
Californian: "Pot machine?" When did they begin the enterprise of vending the cannabis?
Washingtonian: No, good sir. I requested a "pop" machine.
Californian: Is "pop" some other form of illegal or illicit substance?
Washingtonian: No, bloke. Look here: "pop" as in a soft drink--such as a cola beverage, for example.
Californian: Ho! You desire to beseech a "soda."
Washingtonian: It's "pop," damnit. "Pop."
soda ftw
I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Soda just sounds so much more... sophisticated. Maybe it's because it has more syllables.

Soda.

Yeah, it's like if people went around calling those moving staircases "escalators," or adhesive bandages "Band-Aids." Completely absurd, right?
Completely absurd, right?
Yes, by principal, no by the fact that there probably weren't any competitors at the time, and when there were, the products were virtually the same. Coca-Cola is not virtually the same as Mountain Dew or Sprite, so calling it Coke is absurd. If all soda products tasted the same, then it would be acceptable. For example, people often call RC-Cola "Coke" or "Coca-Cola" since it is a clone of the namebrand Coca-Cola.

They're not idiots, they're just people who have acquired an unfortunate dialectal term.

Doing coke is wrong. Soda might not be as addictive, but it's still for cool kids. I dunno wtf pop is.

Coke = Coca-Cola, cherry coke, etc. Often used around here for any cola varierty.
Soda = Carbinated Water, ask for soda in a pub or resturant and that's what you'll get. Soda is also one of the ingrediants for making fizzy drinks when using the bag in box system.
Fizzy drink = Flavoured soda, can be made with just flavourings or multiple ingrediants, strangley it rarley is used to discribe soda which is a "fizzy drink"!
Mineral water = Stuff out of the ground or tap with added minerals uaually served in a bottle.
Pop = Slang - Any flavoured drink, usually none fizzy but makes very little difference.

Personally I usually just use the name of the flavour of the drink (cola/coke, lemonade, orange) in a bar or the actual name in a shop (Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Sprite, Orange Tango, Orange Fanta).
