Nintendo Wii Price and Release Date.
2006-09-14, 6:17 AM #1
From IGN.com

September 13, 2006 - Nintendo fans finally have a price and release date for the company's new generation console, Wii. The Big N is set to officially announce that the system will hit retail in North and South America for $250 on November 19. The New York Times published with the story and seems, in fact, to have beaten Nintendo Co. Ltd with the news.

Nintendo's Wii console will come packaged with one Wii remote, one nunchuck attachment, an AC adapter, an audio/video cable, a sensor bar, sensor bard stand, a Wii console stand and two batteries. The US package will also come bundled with a copy of Wii Sports, a compilation sports game that best shows off the mechanics of the system's unique controller. Wii Sports features tennis, baseball, golf and previously unannounced bowling and boxing games.

Nintendo said it would provide Wii owners with more than 25 unique games this year.

Wii's much talked-about Virtual Console download service, which enables gamers to purchase classic games, will offer a library of some 30 titles when the system launches. Titles will include entries from the Mario, Zelda and Donkey Kong franchises, Nintendo said. Virtual Console games will cost between $5 and $10 each. Specifically, Nintendo Co. Ltd. announced that Virtual Console games would cost 500 yen ($5), 800 yen ($8) or 1,000 yen ($10); we're presuming these prices are for NES, SNES and N64 games respectively.

The Big N confirmed that it would charge $50 for its new Wii games, which is $10 cheaper than the cost of typical Xbox 360 titles. (Please note that this is First-Party games, prices have not been announced for Third-Part Wii games -- publishers are free to set their own prices on Wii titles.)

Nintendo Co. Ltd. revealed that Wii's various controllers would be available to buy separately at launch. The Wii remote will cost 3800 yen or about $40; the nunchuck 1800 yen or about $20 and the classic controller 1800 yen or about $20.

In a surprise announcement, Nintendo said that it wanted to make Wii a living room centerpiece by shipping the system with features outside of the videogame realm. Wii will include a photo channel, enabling users to display their digital photos through the console. It will also boast regularly updated news and weather channels. In addition, the system will ship with the Opera Web browser, enabling users to connect online.

One of the channels available on Wii is called the "Mii Channel." Here, players can customize avatars by selecting from a variety of face shapes, hair styles, color schemes, and so on. The hook is that these avatars can not only be stored on the console itself, they can also be transfered to the Wii remote itself -- presumably so players can easily access their personalized characters and take them with them when playing against friends.

Sony recently announced that it would ready 400,000 PS3s in North America and another 100,000 in Japan for the system's launch. Nintendo said it plans to ship 4 million Wii units worldwide by the end of the year.

Nintendo will launch Wii in Japan on December 2 of this year for 25,000 yen, it revealed. North America will get the system first.

-----------

I don't know about you, but that sucks. I think everyone was expecting under $250 and BEFORE THE PS3 LAUNCH. Nintendo hasn't started their conference, so maybe by some weird weird chance the New York Times is wrong (doubt it). But atleast we'll get to see more games and possible a bit more answers as to why they chose the price and date. I mean $250 isn't a lot, and Nintendo even kind of said it would be about that much, but bleh.
Think while it's still legal.

After seeing 14 pages of this stuff you can understand more of why Nintendo picked the price (I'm still not sure about the date, but meh. They started boxing the consoles two days ago)

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/topics/wii_preview/presentation/index.html

Videos start on page 4 or 5. I don't remember. It shows off all the cool stuff in the article. The virtual console, the browser, Wii Sports, and how you can create your own character to use on your Wii and in the Sports games. The weather system and the digital photo system, and how you can edit photos together and write letters etc.... It's really awesome.

[Edit: or just go here, they are all there, plus more videos. http://wii.ign.com/articles/732/732689p1.html ]

$5 will translate to 5€ in Europe, which is more than I'd like for a downloadable NES game.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.
2006-09-14, 6:59 AM #6
I just went from 'really might get this' to 'maybe, but not likely going to get this.'

There is conflict within my mind.... Gyah! Why must the Wii seem so awesome!?

R.I.P. PS3.

Not only is Sony's console more than twice the price of the Wii (not sure how much the Xbox360 goes for) at $650, you have a proprietary media format in a time where the final outcome of the Bluray/hd-dvd format war is uncertain. Granted, it's still cheaper than a $1000 standalone Blu-ray player, but that might not be enough to redeem it. Suppose Blu-ray loses as a video format? In that regard, the only thing Blu-ray would still be good for is game media, which is a total waste.

I think Sony bought the farm on this one. The only reason why the PS3 costs so much is the fact that it can play blu-ray, but I suspect that a lot of people won't care. You need a HDTV to get the most out of blu-ray, and lots of peole still use CRT sets so Blu-ray won't look any better than regular DVD..

Also, by the time the PS3 finally comes out, people would have had plenty of time to pick up a Wii or 360, so Sony will get what's left of the market share.

Didn't you read? The Wii releases two days AFTER the PS3.

I wasn't planning on getting a console since they seem to be so damn expensive($600? Are you ****ing kidding me?). However, I will be getting Wii. I like the controller concept, it's only $250, I like Nintendo, and I really want to play Twilight Princess. If you could download Gamecube games or even just play the discs on the Wii, I would lose my mind. I never got a Gamecube. Just a PS2, and I regret that.

Actually it's just at twice the price, and releases before the Wii.

I'm not gonna start a "PS3 vs Wii" argument here, but I'm going to correct your utter wrongness in those two regards.

How the hell could you think that? Upon announcing the downloadable games Nintendo said they'd cost something, at least some of them.

Either way, the prices seem a bit steep. I'm thinking 2 dollars/NES game, 4/SNES game, 5 or 6/N64 game would be fair.

But who am I to say--they'll probably still sell an ungodly amount of games.

...for $250 you get the console, two controllers, the nunchuck, and wii sports (and opera). You think that's overpriced?

tofu, I don't think 250 is alot for all that (Opera isn't free? I thought it was built in to the Wii?). I just expected a lower price from all the hype. Either way I am buying one the day it comes out. I'll be Preordering the day I can.

It looks like Opera is built in. I love how some people are up in arms about the Wii release. Yeah, its $250. So what? It's still the cheapest console in the new generation, plus, why would they release it for $200 when they can easily sell it for $250 or more? Also, $250 gives Nintendo plenty of room for future price drops.

I mean honestly, did anyone really expect it to ship in early to mid October for $150? I know I sure didn't. $250 is a fair price, and the ship date is about right. Sure they'll be competing with the PS3 a little for exposure, but I don't think it will hurt them. Its an interesting strategy. If there are shortages of the PS3, then Nintendo will seem appealing because its another brand new console for less money. If there aren't shortages of the PS3, it may mean that people are just waiting for two days for the Wii.

Virtual console prices are a touch high, but nothing ridiculous. It seems that Nintendo is only going to release the most popular games from earlier systems, and thus games that are relatively rare now and would probably cost you more for the original cartridge anyway. Sure, there are other methods of obtaining the games, but we're talking about legal channels. Plus, you have a whole bargain bin of Gamecube games that you can buy and play. I know I'll be getting SSBM and a couple of other titles to start out with, at least until more Wii games are released.

I'm torn about whether or not to buy it at launch, or wait for the next hardware revision and the first price drop. On the one hand, I really want to try it out and play Red Steel and Twilight Princess. On the other hand, I've always considered it a bit foolish to be an early adopter of any technology.

Opera comes with it (its built into the flash memory), but you only get a Wiimote and a nunchuck, not 2.

Europe, your prices and date just came in. £179 (249 Euros) (336.831 USD) December 8th, 2006.

The way I see it, is even though it converts to a lot more in US curency, it really won't seem that way. Even though 1 Euro doesn't = 1 dollar, things in Europe are still priced that way. For example in Europe when buying soda, it doesn't cost .70 Euro, no it cost 1 Euro just like it costs 1 Dollar in America. Plus minimum wage over in the UK converts to 7.14 Euro which is something like $9! Which is a LOT more than we make minimum over in the US. So it seems steep, it really isn't.

[Edit: Or if it does seem like a lot to you Eurosassians. Just order a Wii from America. It's region free.]

I'm not traditionally a fan of consoles. I dislike the control systems and don't feel that the online multiplayer experience is as good as what you'll find on the PC (I rarely ever play singleplayer games). However, the Nintendo Wii has a very interesting control system and although I think $250 is a bit stiff, I'll most likely be getting one. Will the Nintendo Wii have any online multiplayer games?

Yes.
