His point is that the game is a lot more static than they claim it to be. Like he said, it's just three choices. Three. That's not really any more dynamic than the standard two.

Most games don't give you choices at all. Most are incredibly linear, even the good ones. HL2 had little to no choice. The most you could do was "walk around" an enemy. There was no element of stealth or choice whatsoever. FEAR, great game. Okay, run through hallways and blow away enemies. There were plenty of doors in that hallway, but only one could be opened by the player. No, today's basic FPS elements consist of: Cool graphics, badass or wise-cracking main character, fun weapons, and probably some kind of slow motion element. If you're lucky you'll have great voice acting, a wonderful story and excellent scripted action sequences.

GTA is one of the few games on the market that presents the player with any kind of choice. RPGs like Oblivion are by definition more open, but they are not close to FPSes.

Also, Vinny is right, it seems like SS2 again. In that sense it's really not that innovative, except for maybe far less linear level design. Oh, and the fact that nothing is scripted. But for real this time, not lies like that HL2 E3 video they showed us.

Walking in and picking up an item that causes the doors to shut and enemies to spawn isn't scripted?

My point DJ-Yoshi is that it isn't that new or innovative. You can label me elite or cool or whatever you want but name calling just makes you look silly.

 Okay, fine, story elements are scripted. Of course they are. But room to room gameplay isn't.

For all we know the game could be full of scripted "story" sequences. I just feel pretty disappointed by the video. Maybe I was expecting too much from Irrational.
2006-09-28, 11:36 PM #46
Although that's possible, I would doubt it based on their previous work such as System Shock 2. I think some of Looking Glass's Thief developers went on to Irrational, which is similarly very non-linear. I agree the video is dissapointing in ways, I don't think they did a good job of demonstrating what is (or supposed to be) so great about the game.

Ug, I don't understand why people get hyped up over games based on game trailers. No, the game isn't that awesome. You don't hold your hand out to defend against the drill. You just get drilled until you kill him. You can't look down and see a drill go through you. None of that crap is gameplay: It's invented to hype you up.

The ACTUAL gameplay video looks like it has a lot of potential, but at the same time, looks like a boring system shock with watered down jedi force powers. Groan.

Oh, and it DOES seem linear: 3 options to take out the camera, sure: None of them are meaningful beyond the scope of the room. All the "non linear" aspect of the game really does is present the player with some leway in how he dispatches enemies. I see how this is nice, and I'm not complaining. I simply don't see why this is enough to redefine and resell the same games. I'm disapointed in the FPS genre, and while this is a very small step in the right direction, I would expect a larger step by now.

For those who can't hear the implicit statements: I haven't played this game, and don't know if it will ACTUALLY change the genre. From what I know so far, I have stated my opinions and am open to changing those opinions in the future.

I love system shock 2. This looks good.

I am teh happy.

Kirby, it won't change the genre, because the genre doesn't want to be changed. System Shock had amazing non-linear and RPG elements in an FPS in 1994, no one cared. System Shock 2 did it even more in 1999, no one cared. They're doing it again in 2007, and still no one will care. Every game by Irrational, Looking Glass Studios or Ion Storm has been way ahead of its time. Ion Storm's Deus Ex is the only one to sell really well. The others have cult followings, game reviewers love them (PC Gamer called System Shock 2 better than Half-Life in 1999), but they never catch on, because the majority of the gaming public is just too dumb to play games that require them to think.

Irrational knows what its doing, I have a decent amount of faith that this game will at least be a rehash of System Shock 2 with modern graphics and a new story. That alone is good enough to be a fantastic game.

I honestly don't care about the trailer, I'm hyped for this game anyway.

Because System Shock 2 was basically the ****. :D

OK, yeah. Fantastic points. I digress.

Nice graphics, but nothing else grabbed my attention at all. I really wanted to see more water effects. Surely they must have a ripple/wave system, or splashes or something.

I like how everyone thinks they have this game on lock because of one trailer and one gameplay preview.

I remember being super-psyched about HL2 because of the gameplay preview.

Then disappointment.

Seriously though, I think there's a lot more to this game than the trailer/preview showed, and I think people just like to judge things for the worse prematurely no matter what evidence there is to the contrary.

You have to admit the water effects were pretty cool.

I do agree though that its not that innovative, almost makes me think these guys have not played ANY newish games.

Doom 3 was pretty terrible.

The trailer looks cool but I'm not gonna get hyped about it. Getting hyped just ruins the experience for all games.
2006-09-29, 9:09 AM #57
It doesn't have to be innovative to be good. Some things which were innovative turned out kinda 'meh' like Black and White, or Republic.

As has been said, if it's just an update of SS2 with today's graphics adding to the atmosphere it will be superb. It could be even better, it could be a deus ex 2 - we just don't know.

I for one can't wait, and might have to think about getting some sort of gaming rig with saved pennies at release time :D
2006-09-29, 9:17 AM #58
Although pretty, I personally don't think this looks that great. I think the idea of some post-disaster rust and water filled enviroment just turns me off the game. From the 15 minutes of footage, the gameplay looks like it could be pretty damn repetetive anyway.

Oh, and the original trailer - too much gore. :P
nope.

I'm not judging anything. All I'm saying I was excited for this game but after watching the 14 minutes of gameplay, which is designed to make me more excited, actually made me less.

EDIT: Can anyone identify the voice actor in the trailer?

Feels very system shock / Deus Ex to me. Giving this thing a go for sure.

The trailer was awesome from a purely entertainment standpoint, but I have one issue: dude gets his spine drilled in half and he is still standing up? I don't think so.

Sorry, I disagree. It was still linear, atleast up until I stopped playing (I stopped at the mission where I had to kill Tem Penny) It bugged me alot that I was taking over some hood and my cell phone rings with Sweet or some other dude bugging to go over to their house to start a mission.

He falls down as soon as the drill is pulled out. :)

Invisible War was a damn good game if you looked past the ****ty loading times and the "Deus Ex" name to compare it to.

Well, you'd need SOMETHING to hold on to so that you aren't swept away by underwater currents.

Perhaps there wasn't always water around it... perhaps that section wasn't flooded, perhaps it looked cool, perhaps no one really cares... perhaps I will die tonight (oh wait a min :psyduck: ).

Dude... you didn't have to do the imission you got the call for.

It's GTA... you don't have to do any missions at all.
