Metric > Imperial

Too bad America sucks when it comes to measurements.
I had a blog. It sucked.

Imperial is cumbersome and bizarre. Metric for the win.

The world would be a better place if everyone used metric. Here in Canada it's mostly metric, but some things are still imperial, which if you ask me is really freaking stupid. I think part of this can be blamed on close proximity to the US.

Congress tried shifting America to Metric,

and then they found out none of the old people wanted to relearn anything

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

The United States has gotten by thus far on our system juuust fine.

There are more important things to spend our money on than repainting the road signs in km/h.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

A measuring system conversion would not work in the US.

Try going to Home Depot or Lowes and asking for a 5cm x 10cm x 2.6m (2x4, 8 feet). See how well it works.
2006-09-30, 11:41 PM #14
Metric.

I don't think America should even change, of course the American Empire needs its Imperial units.

Metric because then we can stop losing space probes.

Though a system based on the speed of light and the Planck length might be a good way to go.

Why? What makes America so dense? Other countries have converted.

Ho... When I built my katana stand, I asked for a plank using inches, and there was no problem. The salesman used centimetres (which are used in the records of the shop), and we understood each other perfectly. If in your Home Depot or Lowes the salesman has some serious problems if you use centimeters, it's his problem, and thus the problem of the shop. Ask for another clerk. Their business is to serve the customer and sell as much as possible, not argue about metric or imperial.

So I deem that kind of argument totally useless. Business wouldn't mind one way or another as long as they can sell normally.

I'm going to vote the crappy 3rd option since I come from a country where we use both systems for different things.
nope.

Metric

You're right we use different systems for different things here. My favourite is temperature.

When it's hot we use farenheight: "It's in the 90s"
When it's cold we use celcius: "It's -5"

hehe.

I'm used to it so it makes more sense to me.

When I started my physics requirements for my biochem degree, the first night I had homework, I get all frustrated with this one problem. I put down my pencil and say "Damnit, this is hard!".

My roommate at the time, who is a physics major, looks over and says: "It's not hard. What is it? Let me see."

I look back and say "It's miles."

After classical mechanics, modern physics, thermo and quantum all he can say is: "Damnit, that is hard!"

It's so true. In Canada, air temperature is measured in celsius and water temperature in fehrenheit. Without fail.

In my Algebra class this year, the book's finally nice enough to give a conversion for inches to centimeters. 2.54cm per inch. I don't know how accurate that is, I assume it's pretty accurate, but it makes for some interesting "Convert meters to miles" problems.

Even though I can envision a meter better than a yard, and a kilometer better than a mile, everything else works well. I like inches and gallons and what not.

It's exact. Easier than the reverse -- 1 centimeter = 0.393700787 in.

Southwestern Ontario. Everyone I know does it; maybe it's just a regional thing though.

How odd. I come from St. Cathrines, and they measured it in celsius. When I lived way up north, it was the same, and now here in central ontario it's still celsius.

You're just crazy.

of course, you could just double it and add thirty to get metric

It's multiply by 9/5, and add 32. I convert that one all the time.

A slight error there...

C = (5/9) (F - 32)
F = ((9/5) C) + 32
