I've been hacked...
2006-10-02, 4:44 PM #1
I've been hacked or Windows XP TOTALLY SUCKS. Long story made short:

I was browsing some Japanese/Chinese/Korean gaming and anime websites, and then my computer started to have MAJOR "lag". I stopped browsing, turned off my comp. Came back to it just 15 mins ago, and what do I get? Error messages left and right saying that all my profiles are either corrupted or deleted. Oh well, I click ok. Firewall and all those things appear and dialog appears saying that it is reconfiguring my themes and stuff. Then Windows XP crashes when I close the dialog of the firewall. (Tried restarting many times... no avail) Is this to stop me? By all means NO. I just happen to run a dual boot for Win ME and XP because I if my fathers computer goes down, he needs to have a backup system to continue his work (mine). So I happen to have this. Rawr I actually missed Win ME, seems to go REALLY fast on my computer. I was going to contact a whole bunch of you today for the mmo project thingy, but now I'm set back a few weeks (design document will be finished soon).

I have a problem though. I activated my win XP, will it still work when I reinstall it, as I am going to do a full HD reformat?

How can I prevent this in the future?

I am somewhat relieved that I now have an excuse to reformat my HD as I was beginning to get sick of the unorganized sloppy organization of my HD.

This is all quick and poorly written because I'm desperate and I have a tooth ache. What a way to begin the bloody week.
Nothing to see here, move along.

A good virus scanner would be a good place to start.

I have 3 virus scanners. Mcafee, Ewido and another one which name I can't recall at the moment. I have Peer Guardian which supposidly stops people from hacking you. Whats worse, I cannot reach my antivirus applications, and I'm going to be out of it for a day or two. Maybe more. Tomorrow or tonight I will begin file backups, and I've begun resetting many passwords here and there. This is for real and serious.

EDIT: Going offline, see you in a day or two.

On the plus side, a complete reformat without any backups will only cost him about 6 minutes of work on his MMORPG.
2006-10-02, 9:35 PM #26
Yeah Wolfy, in the end, the only real protection is being knowledgeable about computers and computer security. You can run all the software in the world but if you ignore or disable warnings just so you can run the cool new software you've downloaded you're doomed no matter what you're running.

Multiple virus scanners? That's a good quick way to get file-access related BSoDs randomly. I know from personal experience (accidentally left AVG on when using OneCare Live).

Also, you should really think about a REAL firewall, since the one you're using seems to suck. Windows XP's built in one is even decent enough.

Windows XP will need to be reactivated when you've installed it. Also if you've activated it three times over the internet already you won't be able to activate it until you spend 15 minutes on the phone shouting 4 digit numbers through to a computer with horrible speech recognition ("oh" is not zero apparently. I recommend you just dial the number in instead, it'll accept it that way) and then with a guy who can barely speak English reading off numbers to you to only to forget three somewhere in the middle so you have to ask for them again.

As you can see I am dissatisfied with the preferential treatment pirates get, I mean they don't have to put up with any of that stuff, shame on you Microsoft.

Not according to HooyerD, who once told me that he had WinME running stable for something like two weeks straight.

Of course, I told him that he was full of Sith and that an OS like that needs to be rebooted every two hours, let alone weeks, but he posted his IRC record, and that's solid, undeniable proof IMHO.

One thing that I like about SuSE Linux is that it can re-size and move a Windows partition without destroying data in order to make room for itself (assuming you have room, and it seems it prefers it if it's not terribly fragmented as well), once it's installed, you have read-only access to NTFS partitions. While that's not really effective enough for Antivirus software to do any actual removing of badness (even if there is a cross-platfrom dual-boot magical antivirus), it should let you back up any remaining data (preferably important, non-contaminated, and irreplaceable files) to CD so it's easier to start fresh with Windows. (though, if you keep Linux, it's somewhat of a hassle fixing the boot-loader if you install Windows afterwards, but it's still easy with SuSE opposed to butter-fingering something into a command-line)

Most modern distros have something like that now.

He's not using a firewall, he' using PeerGuardian only he thinks it's a firewall. Gold, you should really know what a program does before you install it.

Who would want to hack his computer anyway? For the secret MMO plans that he plans to sell to a company, and then get the jump on him and sell them to a company before him?

It says quite a bit when 2 weeks is considered a good uptime.

SuSE Linux is one of the worst distros I've had the displeasure of using.

1. The "partition resizing" thing is not something of SuSE. And it is not wholly reliable.
2. Lots of distros give you read access to NTFS.
3. Knoppix is infinitely better for restoring for something like this. Debian/Gentoo/a couple others are much better distros for installing, and SuSE's package manager is enough to scare small children. .(
