No SuSE for you!

I was just making a point, I never said SuSE was the best nor did I say the functionality was unique to it. There's so many distros out there that I am sure they all have their pros and cons, I have yet to try them all or find one that I even like. I just said it would work to back up a broken Windows.

What about those "live CD's" that don't need to be installed to hard drive? Can any of those read NTFS, and if so, would it even be possible to use CD writing software, particularly on a system with little RAM?

Lots of distros can mount and read a NTFS drive, it's just the fact that writing to it was difficult back in the day. (however, things like captive NTFS have been around for some time now and they're better than nothing)

Suse also cost money the last time I checked, which is one thing that steered me away from it. Linux is supposed to be free.

Knoppix DVD. I always have it around in case of catastrophe that I don't know how to fix in command form. I am unsure of NTFS support. It definitely reads it.

I'll just throw in my irrelevant comment that any distribution not based on Ubuntu, Debian or Gentoo is a worthless pile of crap.
