As far as I recall, no, they didn't make as much money as nintendo.

And they did sell alot of units. But oops, they also sold alot of units to replace defective ones.

1) As far as I recall, they did, and then some. See, that's not a strong argument.

2) They sold a lot of units to replace defective ones, but their sales are STILL strong (outselling the ****ing 360 still, still the best-selling console out there, no small feat for the "worst" of the last gen consoles graphically), and they still sell tons of software.

We're not talking about the software.

We're talking about the console, the thing you get in the box and nothing else.

The differences between what the Xbox 360 and the PS3 can do is not very significant. The only reason I would feel justified in spending $200 more on the PS3 is if I was really excted about having a bluray player. I'm not, so the choice between the two was simple.

And in another smart move by microsoft: They are releasing HD movies on demand, with no extra hardware needed, so I'll still be able to enjoy HD movies without shelling out hundreds of dollars for an HD-DVD or Bluray player.

For once, I agree with they way microsoft is conducting itself. They are putting the choice in the hands of the consumer, whereas Sony is forcing a Bluray player into your home and adding an extra $200 onto the price tag of the most anticipated system in the world.

Zelda: Twilight Princess is one of Wii's launch titles, silly. Sure it's on GC too, but it looks totally rad with the Wiimote.

I'm planning on getting a Wii.

I'll probably get PS3:Slim when it comes out.

I'm getting a Wii. It's affordable and sure to have good games. Also, Super Smash Brothers is epic.

Whereas you need to pay for it on the 360, raising the total price a bit. You don't get THAT much more on the 360.

I'm sure that the PS3 comes with more than just the system.

Nope. They axed the GC version in order to get more people on the fence to buy a Wii.

You really believe that, don't you?

Edit: Which is, of course, why Twilight Princess is still listed on Nintendo's website as a Gamecube game. http://www.nintendo.com/gamemini?gameid=fce85fe2-688f-4276-a3c2-84e0f270ab8b&

Okay, sorry. I don't keep that up to date with things like that.

Except first party software is one of the number one ways that they make money off of the console, not to mention the overall sale of software is a great way to see how well the console's still doing.

The Japanese launch of the PS2 was a rousing success, with Sony taking a large loss on every system sold and the first PS3 owner in the world not buying any games.

Yet again, we're talking about THE CONSOLE.

Not THE GAMES.

Going by software sales, Nintendo is the second-largest software developer in the world after Microsoft. Nintendo also makes a profit on all of their systems.

So no, Nintendo is truckloads more profitable than SCE and Microsoft Games combined. Sony and Microsoft don't really produce a lot of their own games; Playstation 2 profits were razor-thin and the Xbox has always been sold at a loss.

This is the main reason Nintendo doesn't care if they're third place in the market. They easily have enough cash in their coffers to develop a bleeding edge graphical powerhouse but they don't need to. Nintendo has the valuable properties that attract millions of sales every single time. The only thing Sony has that can compete with Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Starfox, Earthbound, Fire Emblem, F-Zero, Kirby and Pokemon is Final Fantasy and they only make royalties from that.
