Who actually buys CDS and DVDS and such anymore?
2004-07-06, 6:24 PM #41
I rarely listen to the radio, as it no longer contains any music which appeals to me. That being said, I have downloaded some music, then went out an bought the CDs. It started with looking at some fiendishly clever guitar tabs, then downloading the song to see if it played well. Then, I bought 3 CDs from the band. Happened with Blind Guardian. I found a tab for "The Lord of the Rings," downloaded it along with a few other songs, and then went to the store and bought 3 CDs.

I don't buy CDs at the store as much anymore, as stores don't carry the kind of music I like. I think it's about time to go on an importing frenzy. On the list:
Opeth
Rhapsody
more Blind Guardian
Symphony X (I know they're American, but you try finding one of their CDs in the store)
The Tea Party

I buy them if I have enough money. If I don't, I don't buy them, but when I get money, in some cases I'll buy them.

Hopefully someone understood that.

With the advent of paid-for download services, I would say that that argument is blown fairly cleanly out of the water.

Not when your average CD on pay-per-dl services cost more than if you buy it at the store.

laws seem to be more general guidelines that are occasionally enforced than anything else... otherwise the police would surely be arresting everyone and the streets would be clean. :P

I have a fairly stringent policy about what I download. Most of the time, if I am not compelled to watch a movie in the theater, I will download it, but if I like it, I'll be sure to buy the dvd. I just like to own them. The same goes for cds. And games. But make no mistake, I buy a LOT of movies and games.

The thing that has always bothered me is when people complain about how they don't think "some rich hollywood producer needs their money." Well, newsflash genius boy, they do need your money. They're rich, sure, but in order to be able to front the budget for a big movie, they need money. If they don't make money on their projects, they are less inclined to front more money for a project that needs it. So next time you think about complaining about the effects in a movie, just think about the last time you pirated a movie. Just remember that if those producers made more money that "they don't need," then they would be able to give the effects studio more money to make the effects better.

I find it remarkable how many people fit the above profile.

I resent that.

iTunes charges what? 99 cents a song? Been awhile since I looked at the store. Your average CD contains what... 12 tracks? .99x12= *gasp* Eleven dollars and eighty-eight cents ($11.88).

I don't know about anyone else in here, but my options for getting CDs from the store are limited to Media Play, Target, Wal*Mart, and Best Buy. All of which consistently have CDs for 15 to 20 bucks. Yes, 11.88 is ALOT more money than 20 bucks.

Plus, a lot of albums on iTunes can be purchased for $9.99, regardless of the number of tracks.

The average album that /I/ would buy is around 16-20. Besides that, iTunes, and generally the bigger portion of online stores have a selection of artists that only the general populace would listen to. When it comes to indy/unknown music I'd be SOL.

ok lets see... itunes.. you get... the songs... cds you get... the songs in much higher audio quality, a cd you can rip to any format you wish, the case with all the inserts and stuff...

and if it's $20 and isn't a 2 or more disc album then it's overpriced, shop elsewhere... $15 or less is the average here... i haven't bought i cd in a while either... i spend more on games...

I don't buy games any more - never really got warez, but occasionally a fella I knew gave me copied stuff, but it was mainly crap that I threw out after a week.

Films, I buy DVD's when I have the money (Not very often), and yes, I've downloaded some, but I tend to look for older things that I already own (at home), but want to watch at uni. Then I delete them typically.

Music, I've got a friend who used to work in Radio, had a heruuuge music collection (Promos and the like), and gave me more than I know what to do with. My hard drive is now overweight and sweating. I'm putting him on a diet.

The last albums I've bought have been straight after gigs - I went to see Reel Big Fish, who had zebrahead supporting. I thought they were really good, so I went straight to MVC a few days later and picked up their latest album MFZB. Awesome.

[EDIT: I saw Spiderman 2 last night on VCD at a mate's house, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to watch it at the cinema, because after that, I REALLY want to see it again!]

I usually download music to get the feel of a certain band. If I like them and I have the money, I go out and buy the CD. If not I delete the tracks...no harm no foul.

I often download songs, but if I really like the artist, then I'll buy a bunch of their CD's.

And I always buy movies.
