You poor poor people...
2006-11-18, 6:54 PM #1
So I live in Round Rock, TX, about 20 minutes North of Austin. When I get bored I like to peruse Wikipedia about random topics. So I was looking at the Wiki of Texas, when it mentioned the Texas U-turn(turnaround). Apparently this very useful little device originates in Texas and is particularly only used here and few other states. Is this true? Do you people not have these? I find that hard to believe. We have these practically at every overpass.

I live in Kentucky, where it is illegal to make U-Turns. There is a very good reason for this. People are stupid and when people make U-Turns, people die.

we have one of those, but its not for a freeway.

If I could see a picture of what it looks like in real life, I could tell you. I can't tell what that zig-zaggy line means.

Sounds like you need a more strict driver test.

I don't really understand the picture, but if it's anything like a jug-handle or a round-about, we don't have those either.
It took a while for you to find me; I was hiding in the lime tree.

guys the picture's not that hard to understand. Notice the red ramps that go from the off-ramps overtop the freeway to the onramp on the other side?

Anyway, I'd never seen or heard of that, but it's a pretty good idea.. They should have those everywhere..

You wussies. If you miss your exit, you drive 10 miles to the next exit and turn around like a man.

How can people not get U-turns? Are the streets just not very spacious or do people not know how to steer?

Just be thankful you've never been put through the horrors of the Michigan-left in heavy traffic.

Well actually it's more like under. The yellow part, the highway/freeway goes over the intersecting road (blue part) as well as the U-turn (red part). I just can't imagine having to use the light every time I exit the highway and had to get to something on the other side of the road.

EDIT: Well I guess it can be over as well. Here's the text that goes with that picture above.

Quote:
Going hand-in-hand with frontage roads are "turnarounds". These U-turn lanes allow traffic heading in one direction on a one-way frontage road to "turnaround" and head the other way on the opposite frontage road without having to traverse two signalized intersections (see diagram below). This greatly eases congestion in the intersections. Turnarounds can run below the freeway using the same underpass as the cross street, or they can cross over the freeway on the same overpass as the intersecting street or on separate overpasses. These ramps are generally found only in urban areas. Again, these may have different names in different parts of the state. "Turnaround" is the term in San Antonio, and we're the only place that actually uses "Turnaround" signs. In other parts of the state, a "U-turn ONLY" sign is used. Other terms used are "u-turn lane" and "crossover", although the term "crossover" more correctly describes an opening in the median on a divided highway.

We have those in some places in India. They would be useful, except people turn around wherever they like anyway.

We have roundabouts over motorways. It makes some kind of sense, but then again, I don't drive. So I have no experience.

What Tony said, but we don't have freeways. :P

And if some of you lot think that's stupid, you should see the magic roundabout in Swindon.
nope.
2006-11-19, 8:58 AM #25
Wait... most other states don't have those? What a miserable existence. The turnaround is one of the most useful things ever invented for the traffic system. Saves you having to go through a couple lights because you don't have to use the cross-street to turn around.

We certainly don't need those in Belgium. o: The country's so small that there rarely is more than 5km between two exits. It'd be a waste of asphalt to make those.

we dont have them everywhere in ohio, but theres a few. like on I90/OH2, at the 260th exit.

The only time I see any sort of u-turn is on the expressways, where it is illegal to use anyway. They're too freakin dangerous cause idiots like to just jump out in front of 80mph traffic.

Besides that there's no real reason to have one. If you're stupid enough to miss the street you're supposed to turn onto, then you deserve to sit through a couple lights to go back :p

What if where you are trying to get to is on the OTHER side of the damn highway? You know, it's not like if your on one side of the highway you can ONLY go to stores on that side. I don't know about you, but here in Texas, the highways generally go in BETWEEN a lot of stuff.

Quotin' dis.

So you lose five minutes of travel turning around because you weren't paying attention. Perhaps pay attention to your exit next time?

Texas has the best road system anywhere. When I lived in Dallas, it was fantastic to drive anywhere because all the freweways are designed like that. We have one or two in tulsa off the top of my head, couldn't point them out but I remember them. Haven't driven much in oklahoma city. Those things are a godsend though, and no, they aren't very many places simply because they require a lot of forethought in intersection design. For example, in Tulsa there's just not a way to do it economically most places now that everything is already in place.

P.S. In Dallas, there are plenty of roads that go over the freeway, just depends on where you are.

Er... this really has nothing to do with these turnarounds. I don't know what about the diagram suggests that these are for people who miss their exits.

I don't know how you equate missing an exit, having to drive 10 miles to turn around, and then driving 10 miles back to the exit you wanted (which comes out to approximately 20 miles) to five minutes..

You'd have to be going about 240 miles an hour.

Okay, here it is. The turnaround exists so that you can do the thing with the thin black line, rather than the thing with the thin white line. No other reason.

We don't have frontage roads in aus, so no reason for texas u-turns.

Turn-offs are either well signed, or there's nothing to actually turn off to, so you don't need to worry.

I <3 Texas

Turnarounds are great, especially if you are unfamiliar with the area you are in, and make a mistake by driving too far (personal experiences).
