No thanks, I'll stick to the good stuff, like Witch Hunter Robin and .hack [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

try and find uncut season one and two of sailor moon, get the uncut playing (make sure you get a properly subbed version, not a fanboy version) and play it alongside the dic version.

after you do this with every episode, come back and tell me agian that dic didn't do anything to sailor moon.

Sailor Moon is the most edited anime ever. It had sex, violence, nudity, strong language, you name it. A female character was even changed to be a male because they didn't want a OMG LESBIAN ON TV controversy. SailorMoon edited OR unedited is rubbish crap crap crappy crap rubbish.

I made a thread, that turned into the debate, so I made a second thread, that turned into a debate, then I made a third thread, that caught on fire, burned down, got flamed, crapped on, bashed, then turned into a debate...but the fourth one, the fourth one stayed on topic!

I don't like anime. I find it creepy. Some things just shouldn't be in cartoon form unless it is being satirical. For some reason, having a busty female cartoon character in provocative clothing and positions is a real turn off for me.

as I said, find a ****ing sub by someone that actualy speeks japanese, not sone sexless pubescent fanboy sub. I have only seen one fansub get the translation correct, it was a downloaded scene from a dbz episode where kid buu is finaly killed. the clip's subtitles only varied by a small amount, perfecly excuseable for translating into english. however, there was another scene that was done by someone else that was totaly not right.

unless you have seen uncut sailor moon episodes subbed by the people that made it, you are just spouting fanboy propiganda.

Buy the DVD's or rent them. Never watch anime on TV. Plus 90% of the anime on TV is the dubbed version, many people prefer subbed.

Bottom line is, most of the animes are edited, even if they are good or not. Blue Sub #6 has horrible hand drawn animation mixed with CGI, it was so obviously fake, and it just ruined the atmospheme..and the dubb was horrid.

Trigun was barely edited for TV. The edits were some blood taken out, random removals of guns to people's heads, and small dialogue changes (**** changed to crap). It's still very much worth watching.

Yoshi, when you say Digital Cable, do you mean On Demand? I don't think that counts, since On Demand is kind of like a rental service.

And the obligatory hearts:
<3 Trigun
<3 Bebop
<3 Excel Saga

Inuyasha can definitely only be enjoyed in the subbed version. The dubbed stuff on CN just really ruins it and attracts the wrong people.

Besides the voices, what's different? I don't mind the dubbed voices. I actually think they're pretty good. I don't like the show because it's too slow, and the love story is horrible. When it comes to love, the characters are too stubborn and stupid. And the fans, oh how I hate the fans. If you want to see idiocy at its finest, you need only to go to the Adult Swim forums, and read any Inuyasha thread.

One thing I do like about the show is the fighting. There needs to be more of that.

Well, if you are confusing the art syle found in shows like pokemon and yu-gi-oh with the styles from shows like the recent Gundam, Kenshin, trigun and the like, you need your eyes check. Anime has a very broad range of styles. It isn't very common for one anime to have the exact same style as another unless the particular animation studio uses that style for all their shows. For example, the anime style done for DBZ is a truely original style since you don't really see any other anime use that (except for Chrono Trigger, whose style was done by the same guy that did DBZ). Sunrise studios (shows that do Gundam, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, InuYasha, etc.) has a style that I find very much to my liking. Anime shows that are commonly found on channels like the WB and FOX such as Pokemon and the like is utter crap, IMO.

In response to the dub vs sub:

Every version of anime you find on TV that is subbed will be edited. However little, it will still be edited. Gundam Wing at late night was still edited, just less so.

Also, the subbed versions tend to catch the true personality of the characters. Also, rarely is the dubs a direct translation. I've watched DVDs before where the subtitles don't even match what the character is saying.

A good example is .hack//SIGN. Tsukasa in the dubbed version sounds like a whiny baby who doesn't want to be bothered, while in the subbed version, you can tell that it is much deeper. Tsukasa is having troubles mentally, and if you watch the dubbed version, you totally miss that. Not to mention the dubbed version is completely dumbed down, as compared to the subbed version.

I have nothing against dubbed versions of anime, as long as they hold the original feel for the show. A good dubbed show was Ranma. Both the dubbed and subbed version capture the volatility of Akane and Ranma's "relationship". But unfortunately, this doesn't hold true for most shows. You can't tell me Cowboy Bebop was as funny dubbed as it was subbed, for example [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Spirited Away is entertaining on many levels... you could easily be entertained by its trippiness just by watching without sound.

I like anime because of its rediculous ideas and its strange way of expressing things, all great for mindless entertainment and something you can think about if you choose to.

I bet people are flaming one another and getting really annoyed by the fact someone has better skills of persuasive writing than they do, just ignore it, people disagree, it explains most wars i assume.

Yes, Bebop is one of the few dubs that surpass the original voices. I'm pretty sure Bebop is even more popular here than in Japan.

I hate ALOT of anime. All that girly cutesy crap... But there is also lOTS of good stuff. Here's my list:

Yu Yu Hakusho
Trigun
Bebop
Ninja Scroll (movie)
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
Witch Hunter Robin
Vampire Princess Miyu
Naruto
And there's plenty more my anime geek freind made me watch, I don't remember the names. She's the one who got me into anime, starting with a Yu Yu Hakusho marathon, watching a whole bunch of it one night because I got stuck at her house (snowed in lol). I thought it was all crap before that, but I had no choise but to watch, and was pleased.
2004-07-07, 11:38 AM #65
I always thought the dub of bebop was cliched and crude.

Go subs!

The level of character that gets across with the original voices can never be beaten, it gives you a much better feel for the mood of the characters and the depth of the situation.

The voices are ok in some parts, like Inuyasha's voice isn't bad, Kagome sounds really flat though. The way she says alot of things is like they took recordings of individual words and just have them play after the other.

One thing that really gets me though is Kaede's (the old lady) voice. It's VERY wrong in how they have her talk, especially with words she use.

Such as in one of the first episodes when Inuyasha is leaving her under a pile of leaves for protection. The way she says things like "don't forget me" sounds like she's in love with him! Not just in what she says, but in the way she says it.

The love is alot different in the sub versions.. Theres alot more depth and such to it, but you can't really tell that by the american voices. They don't let out alot of feeling whereas the original japanese voices do.

Other issues are that alot of times they'll change the words in a scene severely, or drop sense in favor of fitting words to a person's mouth.
IE: in one episode, Ren was describing to Sesshoumaru how Jaken was currently acting. She uses the word "melancholy", now I'd like to know how a peasant girl with probably very very very very little (if any) schooling could know a word like that?

I know that seems like a very little issue, but it really stands out because of the flat voicing on her character as well.

Theres also issues with some of the characters from the past-Japan time using current American slang. Even ones not around Kagome..

Alot of times it's like you'd be better off reading a rabid fangirl's fanfic.

That is so because it is IMPOSSIBLE for the english dub to be the same as the subtitles because of LIP SYNCING. The subtitles is the direct translation of the Japanese (except for some grammar difference, obviously) but you simply can't dub the english voices the same as the subtitles because the lips of the characters have to go with the words.

Does anyone remember this anime on aagggeeess ago, like late 80's, early 90's, it was something about some giant golden condor bird-thingo and there was a boy and a girl.

Later on there was a big boat instead of the bird-thing, but the boat-thing wasn't around for as long as the bird-thing.

And that's where my addled memories end...

I like the animation in the new Astroboy series. Mind you, it's been a while since I last saw any anime, so they might all have gotten that way now...
