Lasik surgery

Has anyone here gone through with it? Or know anyone that has gone through it? Are they satisfied? How much does it hurt?

I'm strongly considering it because I'm tired of not being able to see, and I'm tired of wearing glasses.

Funny you should ask. I was just reading an article earlier on Cooking for Engineers about how the webmaster went through with LASIK. The article was really quite good.

My grandma just had her cataracts removed. They're slowly getting better, but she said multiple times now that she would never do it again.

My boss had it done ~3 years ago. He doesn't wear glasses anymore, so I'm guessing it worked. I'll ask him about it if you want, I'm kind of interested for myself anyway.

That's a lot more intensive than something like Lasik. The simple correction precedures don't take much more than a week to recover.

I'll probably have to finance it, I doubt my insurance covers it. It'll probably cover the pre-op visit wear they map your eye and stuff.

I'll probably have to finance it. I've been reading alot, and alot of articles say it has a 98% success rate or some such.

Wonder how much it'll cost though. :( The CustomLASIK looks the best though.

One of my co-workers had it done a few years ago. Had to pay it out of his pocket. It was great for a few years but now (about 4 years later) its already degraded almost back to the way it was pre-surgery and will need to get himself some glasses now.

I've looked at it as well, and it is fairly affordable. Have you tried contacts? Lasik is pretty risky. Is there any reason you really want to do lasik besides disliking glasses?
2006-12-08, 10:59 AM #9
Because my vision is bad, so my glasses are strong. And they tend to fog up in the cold weather.
2006-12-08, 11:14 AM #10
Any chance of contacts? I was anti-contacts until I go them. The first few weeks it's a pain in the arse to get them in, now I wake up *pop* *pop* and I'm done. Now I don't need to worry about glasses falling off or fogging up. It's real nice. I don't even notice they are in unless I forget to take them off at night and I wake up the next day with eye clamped shut.
Think while it's still legal.

You may look into 30 day contacts. The ones you don't have to take out when you sleep. I have them, I think they're Acuvue or something. They're pretty awesome and a whole lot better than traditional contacts. I've worn them for over two months before because I forgot I even had them in.

Lasik isnt risky, my dad is an ophthamologist and does it at least a couple times a week. Its very quick, painless, and effective. Usually lasts up to 8-10 years before you need to get lasik again. He charges 1200 an eye.

1200 an eye? So do some people opt to only get one eye done?

Weird, when I was at school my physics teacher said that cataracts removal was the safest and most straightforward operation there was. Not a particularly pleasant one, but one that's very fast and has a higher success rate than any other operation.

Some people only need it in one eye...

Be sure to ask them about halos at night, Rob, some doctors are better than others at reducing them.

Problems are not always (or generally) equal with each eye, I for one see much better with my right than my left. Also, the co-worker I mentioned earlier had it done only in one eye.

Airport air already irritates my eyes enough without sticking stuff in them.
2006-12-08, 1:45 PM #18
Contacts don't cause irritation past maybe the first week of use. If you're one of those people that can poke your eye with your finger and not flinch, you probably won't even have two days of irritation.

Additionally, 30 day contacts are at least half as thin and twice as comfortable. I the common irritation I got with regular contacts (usually haziness in one or both eyes, but fixed with eyedrops) maybe once a day or once every other day doesn't happen anymore.

My eyes water constantly while I'm at the airport, especially in the cold.

My mom had it done last February. She said it took like 20 minutes and was really easy.

But she still has to wear glasses for liking driving and stuff. See, they weren't nice enough to explain to her that "We're going to make one eye see better at a distance" so about 2 or 3 weeks after she had it done, she went to the optometrist and was telling him "Uh, I think I'd be getting used to it by now, why the hell aren't my eyes tuned in to the same distance." and they explained how one eye see better farther away.

She doesn't ALWAYS wear glasses, just watching TV or reading, driving at night, that sort of thing.
I had a blog. It sucked.

You have a dominant eye. It typically has better vision than your other eye. That is normal.

There is too much dust and crap in the air at the airport for me to wear contacts. All of the people that normally wear contacts don't wear them either.

That doesn't matter. In fact, wet eyes make contacts more comfortable when there is a problem. But the dust can be a problem though.

I really want to try the 30 day contacts.. but my mom thinks they cause eye infections, or something.

Heh, my mom had similar concerns. She quoted our now dead pediatrician from 20 years ago that said it wasn't a good idea to put foreign objects in the eye.

I don't understand people like that. At what point to they get off being smarter than the field of modern medicine?

Modern Medicine often seems barbaric if you fast forward a bit.

I have had them for a year now. I tend to forget to change them because you forget you are even wearing them. :o

Oh, and no eye infections haha

*bump*
:D

I'm considering it as well; I can custom Lasik locally for about $3700...in Montreal for $2500, or out west (where I plan on moving) for $1200-3000+ (depending on the 'package', etc, so probably $2500-3000). I've checked with a more than a couple people, and the dominant comments are like "The best money I've ever spent", etc. People can go from 20/400-800 to better than 20/20...

I need Lasik to work where I'm hoping to work, so I'll probably be taking the 'do-you-qualify' exam sometime soon.

Are they.. prejudice against people with glasses?

My cousin got lasik and other then it being slightly irritating for about a week, has had great results. Has 20/20 vision now and no complications.
Life is beautiful.

Practical reasons (see below).

Fixed. ;) Yeah -- most departments near Phoenix require 20/200 uncorrected. If I get smacked in the face and lose a contact or two, I wouldn't be much good anymore (20/400).
woot!

Ahh, that makes sense.

Yep. I'm hoping I'm a Lasik candidate; most people I've talked to have had excellent results.

My boss had it done a few years ago, he seems happy with it. I've never seen him wear glasses since, so it can't be all bad.

only thing ive heard against the surgery is that it can affect your low-light vision. also staring at a computer screen could be a bit more painful.

To the best of my knowledge, halos at night, etc used to be an issue, but from what I've seen, it seems to have diminished with more advanced technology. A place in Montreal claims possibilities of 20/8 - 20/10 vision...that's insane...

If your eyesight isn't too bad (that is -1 to about -5 d), then you can try Ortho K contacts. You wear them at night, then take them off and wash them in the morning. These are hard contacts that mold your cornea, so that you can see clearer without glasses during the day. The effects only last about a day or two, so your cornea would go back to its original shape if you stop wearing them.

I got it done and it costs 1200 in total. The contacts are custom made. I love playing sports and teach swimming, so these really helped.

I may consider Lasik in a few years, or maybe the Night and Day (30 days) contacts that someone mentioned early.

I could get lasik but the department I'm going for doesn't care as long as you can get 20/40 corrected.
I've decided against lasik though because if I remember right its not 100% risk free and I'd hate to have things worse than before.
