Did you know what a "hanging" was, and why it was used for execution?

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/01/04/national/main2329468.shtml

Although my memory could be foggy, but I must have known, by 5th grade, what a hanging is.
I think.

**** I barely remember when I was 20 much less 10.

I remember smacking a girl's *** when I was 10. From there on out, no female *** has been touched since. :(
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

I don't remember being 10. Or 11, 12, 13, or most of 14. Vaguely remember 15. And I remember the larger bits of 16. I'm 16. :<

I registered and am trying to post the following comment:

Quote:
Has anyone considered this? (Forgive me, I haven't read all 14 pages of comments)

1) The parent gave the justification that Saddam was bad.
2) The child did not receive a Christmas gift from his father.
3) Children are told that if they are bad, they will not receive Christmas presents from Santa.

Therefore, in a child's state of mind, the child was somehow "bad," and since bad men are clearly hung, as he was told...

Just the first thing I thought about.

Funny how parents shelter their children to ‘protect them.’ Because, after all, ignorance is bliss. Especially when you are accidently committing suicide. Weee!

Well, it makes sense. The problem is, I'm guessing 10 years old is too young an age to even be contemplating suicide? I could be very mistaken.

farfetched. The boy killed himself because he associate bad people being hung and lack of christmas gift meaning he was bad, and even after that, decided he should kill himself?

Im normally against the whole violent movies/video games influence people but at the age of 10 and being a curious (albeit a bit stupid) kid I could see this happening.

Not me. It doesn't take too much brains to figure out that a slipknot and a noose tied around your neck would strangle you to death, risk taking behavior or not. However people, especially those that know the deceased, go through one of the stages of dealing with death: Denial.

So, if the kid didn't kill himself, the media did! Damn that Saddam Hussein killing for killing small children!

Furthermore, if children do not know what hanging is (or the classical term that is more understandably lesser known, lynching), then how do we stop them from hanging their selves? We can draw from conclusions we have seen here that if children do not know what hanging is, and we use is rarely for high profile criminals as a form of capital punishment, they become inquisitive and try to copy what they've seen happen.

So what's the solution?

MORE HANGINGS.

That's right. We hang people more for the better of our children. We must hang all people of capital profiles. And after we hang them, we move down to misdemeanors and begin hanging them. That way, the children of our nation will be aware of the effects of hanging and what type of people we use it for.

Maybe he didn't know that hanging = death, and that they were just hurting Saddam.

I definitely knew what hanging was. I was a well-read child. As every child should be.
The problem here isn't they saw something bad, the problem is they saw something bad and were so uneducated that they tried to mimick it.

Most children should know by that age what hanging is, what death is (to some degree) and why both should be avoided.

Same... and I agree on this. It should be pretty much be common sense as to what the effects of hanging are. ;)

Not at all. That was the hardest I've laughed all day. And yes, I knew what a hanging was when I was ten. Where did I learn this? Movies and TV.

I knew the dangers as a kid, maybe partly because there was a highly publicized local death of a kid who dove down a staircase while trying to "fly like Batman" (yes, I know).

I knew what a hanging was, my dad used to watch a lot of westerns.

If I remember I was grounded for a while and got a very long lecture about how I could have killed my brother and so on. The noose really wasn't even that good.
