iPhone, hot.
2 year Cingular contract exclusivity, not!

If they dropped the whole cell phone thing and gave it VOIP over wifi it would be so much better.

I don't know why in the hell they decided to lock this phone to GSM.

It'll be their ruin!

Am i the only one that thinks that a completely touch sensitive phone is a bad idea?

Not being able to feel each number would really get on my nerves.

I think it looks awesome. Cingular sucks, though, totally sucks.

Oh, and they partnered with yahoo for search. Wtf is the point of that? Does anyone actually use yahoo anymore?
2007-01-09, 12:00 PM #7
Just to clarify, i think it does look cool, the functionality is what bothers me.

Too expensive, guess I'll be sticking to carrying a phone, mp3 player, and web-browsing device for a while.

i want to play with one.

It uses Google search. Yahoo is providing free e-mail accounts or some such.

Do any of your friends have a LG Chocolate? It's really not that bad.

My biggest concerns are how robust is an Apple screen of that size going to be, and how will it be kept clean? You're supposed to watch movies on the same surface an SMS freak like myself taps out sometimes 10+ messages a day? My guess is one end of it aint gonna look so good after a while.

That said, a true mobile phone + MP3 player is the gadget I have been hanging out for for ages. Now if they can just cram a 6 megapixel digital camera in there also...

Oh my god... I want one.

The cignular thing is the BIGGEST turnoff.

Can you use memory cards with it? It looks like there's a slot on the side.

Jesus christ, how much? I REALLY want one of these. It seems like everything I said cellphones should have, plus some. How much is it projected as?

Apparantly I'm the only person that doesn't mind using different devices for different things. I don't need a phone that plays music or sends email. Text messaging annoys me. I don't need mobile myspace, and I'm cool with using the internet at home.

I just need phones to talk to people.

I take it you've never owned glasses? A huff of breath on the screen and wipe it off on your pants. Good as new.

Anyway, it looks quite cool. But like the iPod, it'll probably be weighed down by DRM and you'll only be able to use it with iTunes. :(

I hope it will eventually get offered on different carriers. If it were Verizon I'd probably pre-order one now...

I can understand most of your points, except text messaging. You've never been in a situation where you can't talk (lecture, meeting, etc), but you need to get a quick message to someone?

Whatever happened to using cell phones ... to make calls?

I usually just wait until I can make the call. If it can't wait, I get up and leave. One's more important than the other.

Did you guys see Apple TV as well? Cool beans.

And it is a phone...so you can make calls?

On one hand I don't particularly mind using more than one electronic device when I leave him (typically iPod and cellphone) but the proespect of so many things coming together in one package strikes me as something to be excited about.

Also: does iTunes sell HD content?
2007-01-09, 3:08 PM #25
The apple tv thing is kindof lame. I don't see the point, you just get a box to stream content from your computer to your tv. There are a lot of devices out there that already do that. Or just get mythtv

That's really nothing new. That sort of stuff has been around for years. That one's just wireless, so we can get visual noise and artifacts in our video feed.

Uhm, no?

The video would be unaffected by the wireless connection unless it was unable to maintain the bandwith, which shouldn't happen in most cases (and can be easily fixed with a repeater).

An HD signal is pretty fat....

And what's wrong with just getting a dvi-hdmi cable?

No more so than any other GPS device...
2007-01-09, 3:37 PM #32
Most GPS devices I've seen with maps like that have larger screens.

You can zoom any portion of the screen with a gesture. Looks awesome to me. Similar to the wii browser, once you can zoom in anywhere you want, it becomes better.

Not nearly fat enough to completely saturate a 802.11g connection. >.>

The zoom gesture should be like the one shown in this video. Place two fingers on the screen and move them together to zoom out, and push them apart to zoom in. Totally intuitive.

As far as fingerprints go, I know 3M (and possibly others) have coatings or plastics for touch screens that resist the pickup of fingerprints. I doubt Apple is using something like that, but they should. It won't stop the grease from pepperoni-faced 15 year old Johnny, but it'll help.
