Hollly crapp that's nice!

Hmm. I wonder how long it will take for Apple to make live video calls... that would be sweet.

I won't be surprised when Apple starts to make cars.

Video. And considering this thing doesn't even have 3g, it'll be a while before apple has video conferencing on a phone.

Does anyone have details on the rumor of the front being made out of zirconium dioxide? For scratch resistance and maybe smudge as well.

I'd believe scratch resistant, they would pretty much have to have something like that for the iPhone. As for smudge-proof, it doesn't look like it from the keynote video I watched, as Jobs had quite a few fingerprints and smudges on his.

If it's anywhere nearly as scratch resistant as the iPod, then it's pretty good.[/sarcasm]

Never really been into Apple technology, and found no need for an iPod (everyone might think im weird) but my 3-y-o MD player suits me fine. As for an iPhone besides it is gonna be expensive and contradicts my new year's resolution of being resourceful. Not the sort of phone I'd want anyway - I just want a phone where I can talk and send text messages (without the T9 tosh) :)

Why does Apple insist on putting the vowel i in front of everything? It drives me crazy!

because they think they were the first ones to do it, and they STILL think it's actually cool.

CISCO is suing Apple over the name, heh.

Actually it's recently been reported CISCO and Apple have been in talks about it for a while and CISCO's acquiesced, if I recall correctly. Unless this is new news, and not just a rumor.

EDIT: It seems CISCO IS suing Apple. They were in talks about it though.

From what I can gather, Cisco haven't bothered suing other companies infringing on the iPhone name in the same market as their own product (VOIP), but have just waited for Apple in a very similar market (cell/mobile) because presumably they have far deeper pockets than the little companies marketing other iPhones.

I don't agree with it, I think it makes Cisco look quite silly (almost like a stubborn url squatter) but you can see the logic.
2007-01-10, 10:43 PM #58
Stubborn URL squatter?

CISCO has been developing products CALLED the iPhone since 2000. They've had the title just as long. Apple blatantly said "Screw you CISCO" and named it iPhone anyway. It's not like they just copywrote the name and did nothing with it, they have products currently selling in the SAME MARKET that apple is pushing it's way into.

Yeah, the logic is fairly clear; Apple will make a lot more money than those smaller companies with their iPhone.

Does anyone else think the "slide to unlock" feature won't be as effective as Apple's boasting it will be? It seems to me that sliding something into your pocket could run the risk of unlocking your iPhone.

Mouse gestures in Opera totally rock. I'm hoping they have more gestures than just that. Maybe it should be in the shape of a checkmark instead of just a slide.

Oh, and didn't it have to be two fingers? That way, it's two distinct parallel lines at the same time, harder with a set of keys or whatever in your pocket. And honestly, if you just paid $600 for a phone, you're not going to have much else in that pocket ;)
2007-01-10, 11:30 PM #62
Even more, if you value the screen, it's likely you'll have it in a leather sheath. I don't see a sliding motion just happening by accident.

And if it's like a mouse pad type touch screen, small, hard, cold things like keys won't register as a 'touch'. And yeah, I'd keep mine in a case.

Hmmm, my phone contract will run out around October.... By then it should be out (or thereabouts) in the UK....

:)

I'm not quibbling Apple moving in on it (probably somewhat forcefully), I'm bringing up the fact that numerous other companies trade under iPhone and haven't been sued by Cisco yet - they waited for Apple to wade in before they brought in the legal team.

Btw Apple is no longer Apple Computer Inc.

Just Apple Inc now.

Hmmm, I suppose most people would/should be smart enough to protect this phone. I do like Brian's idea for a check mark instead of a straight line though.

Really though, who doesn't have a DVD player of some sort? Especially when you consider the type of people who would actually buy the Apple TV.

There's not way in hell I would pay $600 for a phone. Especially when it's only 8 Gigs.
2007-01-14, 9:42 AM #73
What's the point of having 40 or 80 gigs of space that'll just increase the weight and lower the battery life? How long does it take to listen to 8gigs of music (I appreciate video is much less kind on this analogy)? I've got 15 gigs at nine days, so roughly speaking that's 4 or 5 days of constant playback (which will eat all your battery).

My first mp3 player had a capacity of 128MB, and yes it was a pain changing the songs on it all the time, but really you won't have to change songs around that often even at 4gigs. I know for a fact I could easily deal with just a few gigs of music for the little bit of day by day listening that I'd get out of an iPhone.

Apple should make a game console. It would be the first system without any games to play.
