Freaking finally.

I mean its a good campaign FOR apple. "Make people think macs are cooler." And yes, it works. It makes sense to "personify" your company like this... but its just obnoxious because it just feeds the uninformed mac zealots.

Apple is just as annoying as Microsoft but much better at hiding it. In fact, those Mac ads annoy me more than Gates is letting on.

I have to admit, one of the mac forums I go to are full of people who constantly bash "M$" and it does my nut in. That said, some of the things Gates says in that interview are just wrong - like how Macs are constantly being undermined by security guys, and that there are security flaws that allow someone to control your mac. I can't be arsed to find the exact quote, but it's in that 4 page interview.

The english versions of the adverts with Mitchell and Webb are quite cool though.

"Old newz" but still a more timely response than Gates'.
Some of their other videos are good too, like "How to Talk like a Pirate."

Except there are.

While Microsoft was struggling to lock down Vista and XP SP2, Apple was making OSX look pretty. I'm not joking. OSX = Security through obscurity. The only reason you don't hear about these problems is because Apple is very litigous and the malware authors generally don't pick on groups smaller than 10% of the computer-using population.

That's mostly what I've heard: that you get less pop-ups/viruses/etc on non-Microsoft products because hackers don't target them as much, not because they're more secure. Windows probably is more secure because so many of it's weaknesses are found by malware authors, and Microsoft fixes them. Macs and Linux aren't "tried by fire" like Microsoft is.

But I do have to admit, I haven't had a lot of experience with Macs and Linux, and the controversy entices me to check them out.
2007-02-02, 1:58 PM #7
Linux is...
2007-02-02, 2:24 PM #8
Yes, Linux is very secure. Security patches are pretty much a top priority, especially considering the NSA's contributions.

I don't know why, but the Mac ads seriously piss me off. I find it hard for people to believe that a PC is that lousy and difficult to upgrade, not to mention that the user is apparently inept and unable to handle the massive challenge of upgrading.

Four years ago, I would have agreed with this statement wholeheartedly. Now after three years of helpdesk service in me belt, I can tell you that the lion's share of the populace would NOT be able to handle an upgrade.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

On the plus side if they're ever going to upgrade the mac in the ad they get to shoot an actor.
nope.

I'm sure they'll show this. Right after they show the PC guy playing games and the Mac guy going all :gbk:

I find it funny how every time they come on about "PCs being boring" Im playing some game against a guy in Japan.

Boring? Hell no!

This reminds me...
Back in 98' we had a pc [Still have it...] and my friend had a mac. Now you see the funny thing is, is that his parents got it because of the whole "OMQ different and better omq!" sentiment that was going on. They abandoned it only 2 months later because nothing worked on it.

2007-02-02, 6:46 PM #20
Why would you abandon it? At the time, macs were pretty on-par with PCs. Gaming asside.

Those commercials annoy me. PC is a generic term, meaning Personal Computer. In that way, a Mac is technically a PC as well. The only real difference is the OS.

Also annoying the assumption that a PC == Windows box.

It would be awesome if a Linux guy came on to the set during one of the commercials, kicked the mac guy in the nuts after saying "I can run on you too" and then turns to the PC guy saying "It's not too late".
2007-02-02, 7:06 PM #22
The hardware companies aren't exactly making PCs any easier to upgrade, and OEM machines all come with a whole ****load of extra **** that nobody wants and most people don't know how to get rid of. Except, the average user doesn't blame the cruft, they just think 'omg windows is slow'.

I have a Mac laptop, and I like it. I have a desktop rig that runs XP, and I like it. Fancy that you can use and like both, eh?

Some of the commercials are fine like the iMac being ready out of the box. Others are a complete farce, like the camera one. It's not hard to add a webcam to a computer.

In the same way that Alienware might be a good company to buy a PC from if you're looking to save money.

PC vs Mac hardware arguments are moot these days because Macs are PCs.

To be completely honest, I'm very doubtful that a Mac (released at the same time as a 98 Machine) could lose, performance- and stability-wise, to a Windows 98 machine.

Jedikirby- the best part about that ad is that they're talking about how you'd need a new computer for a new OS (vista)... so you should get a new computer for a new OS (OSX)

Oh GOD that ad annoys me. If you're smart enough, you can custom build your own computer for cheap and install Vista on it.

Most people I know that have Macs, which are also PC's, have it " 'cause it looks cooler." I do admit the GarageBand program on the Mac is cool, but most people I know don't use GarageBand.

Most of my friends use Macs. The only reason they use them is because the school pimps them nonstop for some damned reason. They all think the Mac vs PC ads are hilarious. I try to explain to them that nearly all of those ads are simply lies, but they don't care. They just think it's funny that the ads rip on pcs. To this I simply reply "I don't need ads to rip on your computer. It does it all by itself."

Oh, and also, I was just checking the Apple website. It's remarkable how many times you see little quips like "unlike Vista" or "but in Vista" on there. It's borderline political attack advertisement. Forget telling you why your software is so good, just tell us why the other guy's software is so BAD.

I don't know if this is the case in all universities, but Apple pays the on-campus tech store for every Apple product they sell. If it weren't for that (and the J-school's ridiculous requirement that you have to have a Mac - apparently PC laptops don't run MS Office :downs: ), we wouldn't have two out of four walls adorned with Mac crap (the other two are split between a giant TV and laptop/360/PS2&3 accessories).

Yeah. There are a lot of campus stores that are "Official" Mac retailers these days.
