Stop downloading so much porn.

I ran Windows 2000 for around 4 years. I never had to reinstall once, and I never got a virus. I didn't even have any anti-virus software.

I doubt he knows how to run bit torrent, otherwise he would have pirated XP.

But I doubt XP will run on his craptacular computer.

Well, I just find it odd that, the second you try to install this "free" version of 2000, it not only fails but you post how this virus pops up right away. People all of a sudden don't just get computer viruses out of nowhere...

whatever *shrug*

Obviously he doesn't need internets if all he can run is a crappy, outdated, vulnerable OS.
2007-02-10, 5:52 AM #19
How many Win2k service packs are there? 5?

I bet he's running a base install and he just got sasser or something.
2007-02-10, 6:39 AM #20
You probably got Blaster or Sasser or some variant. They'll infect you if you use an outdated version of 2000 or XP, with all the vulnerable services left running.
You should reformat, and install 2000 again and this time without your internet cable attached.
Then run this program (of course you'll have to download it beforehand and save it to a floppy-disk or something) from the command line* with the /all option. This disables all services that could be attacked, giving you time to connect to the internet and download all service packs and patches.

* go to start --> run, type in cmd and press enter.
From there you need to navigate to where you saved the svc2kxp.cmd file with the cd (change directory) command. cd.. goes a directory down. If you've saved it to a diskette you get there by typing a:
You run the program by typing
Code:
svc2kxp.cmd /all

Am I the only one that thinks this is a complete crock? How long have you been running an outdated discontinued OS? You've gotten viruses before. Trust me. In fact, I'm sure there's still plenty of nasties running around that like to feast on Win98s vulnerabilities.

Anybody who goes to #massassi has probably heard me complain about the goddamn mouth-breathing knuckle-dragging morons who run computers with insecure operating systems and let them get infected with viruses that redirect spam or commit DDOS attacks. Basically they ruin the entire internet for everybody and they should be buried alive with their computer.

Isn't it funny how things work out?

Try leaving XP on the internet with no service packs.

I'm used a laptop with XP and no service packs installed for 4 and a half years. Only updated 3 weeks ago. Had no virus problems.

Just don't download questionable material and you are fine.

Yeah, seriously. I have a copy of XP with SP1a. Last time I reinstalled and jumped online to have it immediately update and download SP2, I got a virus WHILE it was updating. I wasn't surfing, I wasn't chatting, it was just sitting there, connected, and updating, and I got a virus.

Yeah, virus infection isn't usually instantaneous on a brand-new install.

Of course, if he downloaded a dirty warez version with a virus slip-streamed into the install, then that is a different story altogether...

Look at it like this: How many ways are there to get legit windows 2000 for free?
2007-02-10, 5:05 PM #39
I can only think of one, and it is legit. But that's not how TE got his.
I had a blog. It sucked.

You must be behind a router and stuff man. You don't have to even open the browser to get crap on XP with no service packs.
