Not a good excuse?

Either way, I bet your modem functions as a router, and if it doesn't you need to get one.

My modem doesn't block ports or do any fancy router stuff. And I don't need one:p

You should get one.

My cable modem doesn't do any router functions, either. I use just the regular Windows firewall, and rarely use Windows Updates. The majority of the security problems are due to user stupidity, so why do you we *need* routers?

I have a nice wireless g router. It doesn't work all that well all the time since we have it set up for a mac/windows network.

Sorry, but in my opinion user stupidity includes not doing freaking updates.

When the updates are all for programs that I don't use (IE, Outlook, explorer.exe, messenger.exe, etc) and other **** that doesn't apply to me, why bother? No sense in isntalling updates that are likely flawed themselves to fix the **** I don't use.

Ditto. Yeah, maybe it can be exploited even if I'm NOT using it, but I'd think it'd have a significantly higher chance of being a problem, if, you know, I DID use it.

Try going to the task Manager and ending explorer.exe.

You'll find that the taskbar and all your icons vanish.
nope.

He's probably using a different shell.

Which isn't as vulnerable because no one cares.

Yes, you do. Litestep or whatever retarded shell replacement you're using still hooks into explorer.exe to do... well,... anything.

The "majority" of updates aren't for programs 'you' aren't using. The majority of security updates are parts of the OS your programs are using. :downs:

Please run Windows Update.

Yeah, your refusal to update your computer affects the rest of us because your computer is a haven for trojans and worms used to attack us.

I use Blackbox, and then ExplorerXP for my file manager. Explorer.exe doesn't run. I get updates every few months, if it looks important enough. My system has run just fine without a given update for a few years now, not installing it now that it exists isn't going to bring about the end of the world or the end of my computer's integrity. I know my computer's in good shape, there's no reason for me to go "OMG WindowsUpdate".

Except, as I said previously, there is still about 50 different ways your computer will, and does use IE and other stuff including explorer, even if you don't think it is.

There is no reason NOT to get all the windows updates, other than raw laziness, which is just plain :downs: . Fix your PC before it comes after us.

Modern viruses don't "OMG LET YOU KNOW YOU'RE INFECTED" :downs:

Spyware/adware, sure. Maybe. Most of the viruses that are being written are designed to actually take control of your computer and make it do fun things like "attack Massassi.net" or "forward Nigerian scam emails". People like you are why we can't have nice things.

Edit: Aw frack it, I'll use babelfish.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.
