There's nothing wrong with Alabama.

Well...not most of it.

I just watched that with a link from Digg. Rednecks are stupid like none other.

However, the Top Gear guys really were asking for trouble. It would be the equivalent of driving around in Harlem with "Rap Music Sucks", "50 Cent is a retard" and so on painted on your car.

It was an immature stunt with an immature reaction.

Put something offensive to british people on your car and drive around britain. Guess what the response would be? Probably nothing.

Good for the british.

This is America, not Europe. The culture isn't going to be the same, of course.

And I'm sure there's something that would get plenty of brits going. It may not be in the same vein as what gets some Americans going, but it definitely exists--every human has their touchy subjects, no matter what country/culture they're from.

Well, just so that you guys know, here in America if those rednecks had kicked those british guys' asses, they'd have had at least some protection of law. There's a law, at least here in Oklahoma I believe, about language designed to incite violence.

Now, sure, those rednecks are crazy, but you have to understand how obvious it was what these guys were doing, and that's openly mocking and making fun of their culture, and trying to get a rise out of them. Guess what? That culture is happy to oblige.

Ask and you shall receive. I wouldn't go into some town in england and say their soccer (football) team sucks *** and soccer (football) is for little girls, I imagine their reaction would not be dissimilar, though to what degree I can't guess.

And the UK is about 1/4th the size of Texas. We've got a helluva lot more variety because we have a helluva lot more land.

Congratulations to Top Gear for taking on the role of MASTERS OF THE OBVIOUS. The next show they do should be to walk through certain European countries with signs around their chests with phrases such as "only gays like soccer" or how about go to Los Angeles and walk around with a sign saying "I hate ******s". The truth of the matter is that you could do something offensive like that to various different towns across the world with similar, if not FAR WORSE results.
2007-02-13, 4:39 AM #27
This thread should've been named something like 'are you a redneck?', since i can spot all the rednecks from this thread just by reading the comments :D

'Only gays like soccer' isn't quite the same thing as 'nascar sucks' or 'man love rules ok' or 'im bi', OR 'hillary for president!'. The texts on those cars weren't insulting anyone, they were just opinions. And the rednecks got pissed off because someone had an 'opinion' written on their car.

I think the intent was to see who'd get the most negative attention and have a bit of a laugh. Not deliberately provoking a hostile response.

But then again I'd be worried about anyone who'd get offended by something like "Man-love rules OK".

Yeah, and they'd get bonus points for getting shot at, or arrested.

A few people might care, but I doubt anyone would chase you.

Fact is, most Brits would much rather just have a good rant to their friends than attack someone who offends them.

personally i think the rednecks had every right to be offended, and the guys from top gear were idiots if the were expecting a mild 'oh, well would you look at that' from the people there (however i doubt that is what the were expecting) to me it wouldn't even be what they said, but the fact that that they purposely went into this town and did their best (and succeeded might i add) to offend these guys just to get a rise out of them. now im not trying to defend rednecks, i used to live in a town full of them and dear god! im just saying with all the asinine stupid crap that people are offended by these days why are you giving the rednecks flack over this?

Personally I think they went with writing something mild on the cars simply because they didn't actually want to get shot. They were expecting a response but not something quite as extreme. They always exaggerate what they think will happen for entertainment value. I wouldn't expect to be hunted down for writing CONSERVATIVES R RUBBISH, I LOVE TEH MANSECKS or INDIE MUSIC R SUK on my car in Britain so I am genuinely shocked that something so mild managed to cause such a response. I would expect a few people to complain about the comments, but I would never expect to actually be scared for my life.

"Nascar sucks"
"Hillary for president"
"Man love rules ok"
"I'm bi"

No...they're definitely too touchy. To a normal person that would be lighthearted.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

NASCAR sucks almost a millionth as much as tofu.
