Lame
2004-07-15, 10:43 AM #1
Okay, this is really lame. We were talking about Doom 3, and all of a sudden, someone brings up having played the Alpha. Now a LOT of people have played it, and we've discussed it many times on the forums and sometimes in the chat. But for some reason, the admin feels the need to BAN someone for saying they played the alpha. Why? Two hours before we were discussing drugs and another admin said it was okay, as long as we weren't pressuring anyone to use them. Then, when I bring up a complaint about it, I get banned too, for NO FREAKING REASON.

This issue, I believe, effects the entire Massassi community. Now I know there are corrupt admins, and there are admins who are a bit hypocritical, but this is ridiculous. The admin, in my opinion, was in the wrong.

I'm asking the community, and the admins here, Was this banned person in the wrong, and was I in the wrong for sticking up for him, or was the admin in the wrong?

I won't be surprised, however, if this thread gets closed within the next 10 minutes. *sigh*

Having a discussion about drugs isn't against the rules. Talking about the Doom 3 alpha is aginst the rules though, is it's warez.

You were banned because no one likes you.

Yeah, great tofu. But I wasn't because that's not the case.

The principle is the same--drugs are illegal, and warez is illegal. But people still talk about both. Telling how to get it, or how to use it, etc, however, is against the rules.

I don't have a problem with the ban. It is illegal *shrug*. But before everyone jumps on me, please know that I've already fully paid for my copy of doom 3.

I just find it upsetting that someone would get banned for sticking up for me. The chat seems to be run more and more like a dictatorship. And yes, while massassi is privately owned, you can't take it so far that it starts to feel like a prison-yard.

I have nothing against most of the current chat-ops, I just think that maybe there's a few who haven't quite reached the level of maturity that's required to govern an intelligent conversation.

I've only ever got banned for swearing in chat, but I've witnessed other admins picking on massassians, banning or simply kicking them cos it was : (a) funny or (b) a pathetic reason.

Most admins are ok, but there is the odd one who needs their admin "privilages" taken away and shoved up their left nostril.

Rule on warez is this:
Quote:
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">No illegal software/warez/mp3s. We don't take kindly to people using our forums for the illegal solicitation or trade of illegal or copyrighted material.</font>
Mentioning wares is NOT using the forums for illegal trade of copyrighted material any more than mentioning drugs is not using the forum for selling or trading them. The admin was wrong.

I personally think the certain admins need to pay more attention to things before banning someone. They seem to do it just because they can.

The banning and enforcing of rules around here is not regulated very well. The admins need to get it pulled together and organized. That means (among many other things) not playing favorites.

I think its time Admins start reevaluating the people chosen to run the chat.

And before any moderators from the chat say "Read the rules" How about you read them yourself? Because you aren't enforcing them correctly.

Admitting to playing the alpha is admitting doing something illegal. It's not asking for or sharing the warez, but it's still admitting guilt. Furthermore, that's the way warez stuff has been handled in the past, so it's not like this person geting banned is a first.

But the point of it, Avenger, is that we were talking about drugs earlier, having done them and everything, and an admin was FINE with that. Fast forward two hours, a guy says he played the alpha which is perfectly fine via the rules, and he gets banned. That's just serious WTF material.

Listen I know you are annoyed about this, but seriously is it that big of a deal?
No it may not totally be against the rules, but the job of OPs is to keep things under control. We use our best judgement to keep things going smoothly.

It IS against the rules to speak about how to obtain/use/etc Drugs, warez, and anything else illegal.

It is because the conversation was harmless. Then we're banned for who knows how long. And if I hadn't have posted here, it could've taken weeks to get unbanned. I know at the core, it's still just a forum/chatroom, but it's where I spend a lot of my freetime, and seeing that it's summer and I have a crapload of free time...well...

And it's not like we were saying "Yah I got the Alpha at <insert site here>" "Really? I got it at <insert site here>" "Yeah had to use <tool> to get it working though" etc etc.

Besides that, I got banned for trying to say that the ban was lame, and that it wasn't against the rules.

Would it be more "lame" to try to create a "social reform" over a internet forum like this? Don't try to turn this into an open fight against "admin oppression" because you lost talking time on #massassi over some issue you feel were violated. It was not like your "natural internet rights" were revoked. And it is not like a duty of yours to seek "justice" over your incident in a chat and to drag some admin into this make yourself seem tough. If you feel that the actions of an online chat "offends" you and you feel that you must start a "protest" against the "corrupt" system of admins, so be it. But the attempt lead the "Massassian community" in this fashion to fight these admin powers and "amend" what is wrong is becoming annoying.

I understand how you feel, that's why I'm not doing it. I made this thread in the hopes that maybe SOMETHING would change, because the chat is just bs. Half the time you go in there and get kicked for no reason, and the other half the time you can't express your opinion for fear of getting kicked. It's just stupid. Why can't massassi have a nice, cultured, WELL-ADMINNED, and fun place to be.

The purpose of admins is to enforce the rules. Not their opinions.

It's supposed to be okay to admit you use warez as long as you don't encourage it. I don't see how talking about the usage of drugs is any different than talking about the usage of warez, so long as it isn't being encouraged or saying where to get it.

That's what I've heard from the, what I consider better moderators and administrators, but I know plenty others are ban happy and take any chance they get. It's funny though, because a few minutes later they let something else slip.

You can always leave. Go and find an example of a "nice, cultured, well-adminned, and fun place" on the internet to bring back to us.

I think Massassi is a fine place to be. If act somewhat maturely, not take everything so seriously and stop your intense fear of admin oppression, everything is OK. You took one ban and your feelings of sadness and anger and magnified these things here. It is like if someone in real life walked up to you and kicked you in the nuts. Nothing, even in the internet, is perfect.

To be honest, there're only about two or three admins on this site and in the chat that I find at least half decent for that position. The only reason I even hang around here anymore is because it's something to do when I'm bored, really...

I have problems with it, but I'm not going to risk being shot, maimed, murdered, etc because I voice them. And yes, I agree, it did seem like an unfair ban.

Oh, and I've copied the whole section of the chat, for the record.

Echo--It's not the fact that it's just one ban. It's one ban by an admin who's known to be ban/kick happy for no damned reason. I'm not fearing admin oppression, why should I fear it if I can leave anytime I want? I just know massassi could be a much better place with a bit more revision.

And I like massassi as is. But even more so when I don't get banned for FRIGGIN STUPID reasons.

It's generally accepted that Warez of any kind, be it what's steadfastly defined in the rules, or otherwise are a bannable offence on any segment of Massassi. It's been that way since 98. The drug usage has never been defined. Nor do most care because for the most part the site cannot get in trouble for conversations of drug use. On a technicality the site can't get in trouble for Warez discussions either, but Brian is of the belief that he should keep the site completely clean of it. For the most part, Kak does things by Brian's book, and is usually justified in doing something. However, I do feel that your ban was unnecessary.

Basically this rule says that:
  • The presence of illegal material is not allowed.
  • People who advertise or exchange illegal material are frowned upon.

I don't recall reading anything about rules regarding the discussion of illegal material. This rule is way too ambiguous. Yes, the line has to be drawn somewhere, but it should be drawn in print, not in the hand's of the admin's opinion.

Some admin changed the rules since I originally wrote them. I specicially said that discussing illegal things like warez/mp3s/drugs/etc., was banned.
