The main reason I say no, is because if I'm involved in, say, a car accident, and something happens that causes me to die, odds are good, most of my organs which people would want, are going to fail rather quickly and be ruined due to lack of oxygen. If any of my organs are still operating, they will be barely doing so, and therefore I would simply be giving someone another 6 months of agony and pain before they have either two options, try to get another organ, or die.

And I'm an American.

They definitely do give you an option in the forms, I remember filling it out and ticking yes and my mother saying "oh, you want to be a donor, you know you really should tell that to your next of kin - ie me "

But looking at it now I can't find anything that indicates I'm a donor, I guess it's only put on there when you get your full licence (I've had my provisional for 5 years now!)

What about your skin? Skin grafts are pretty important for burn victims and such, is there a reason you can't donate that?

Anyway, and I'm quite astonished I'm about to say this, but I agree with Rob. I think a large part of the donor shortage is due to apathy, not genuine disgust. If people really hate the thought, of course they can say no, but I believe everyone should be a donor by default.

Huh...well, I have a notoriously bad memory :D I'll probably end up in a situation years from now, dying on some hospital bed, with doctors standing around going "Well, his kidneys can go to Mr. ____, his heart to Mrs. _____,...", and I'll say "Wait a second!". Then they'll whip out my license application and I'll shut up and sulk :P

I'm an American citizen. I don't see anything on my license indicating I'm a donor but I'd like to be. Is this something the D.M.V. takes care of?

You need to request the donor sticker when you get license/renew. You have to fill out some paperwork. They give you a little card to carry on your person in event of your accidental death, but they have it all stored on computers and archives and whatnot.

I'm a US donor. It's a small way of keeping myself alive, even after I'm techincally gone. YOU WILL NEVER BE RID OF ME.

I wanted to register as a doner, but my DMV said that it was worthless as they'd just harvest my organs anyways. >_> I don't know why they didn't want me to have that little heart on my license...but then again, I try not to understand the things they do in that town. (US)

Yeah man, I agree, I hope if I ever need an organ, someone else has already chosen whether or not i live or die for me.

That's stupid reasoning because if the organ is so severely damaged that someone else would die if they got it, the organ would never be used. Also, organs are taken from people who generally die at the hospital so that the organ harvest can occur right after a person dies.

That's my feeling. They can take whatever they can use and burn the rest, I don't care.

I'm actually not a donor (also, I'm Canadian for the record), but I have to get my license renewed before Jan 9th 2008, so when I go I'm going to see if I can get a form or something to fill out.

You can't give skin if you've had blood transplants. It might've changed since I last asked, but that was discussed.

41:28. Ok, my paper is actually on a slightly different topic; illegal organ harvesting. Your body may some day fetch a doctor up to a quarter million dollars, and your family won't know, and won't see a cent of the money. After you've died, a morgue somewhere may charge "technicians" a few grand to come in after hours, open you up, take most of what's in you, replace bones with wood, organs with plastic bags and garbage, stitch you back up, and give the tissue to large medical research firms like Johnson & Johnson, and LifeCell, through channels like BMT. Big deal, right? You're dead, and you have no use for your organs anymore anyway. Besides, at least your unused tissues will go to good use; skin meshes for breast or penis enlargement patients, bone dust to help reconstructive surgery patients heal faster, protein labs so a private corporation can patent any interesting genes you may have. Most of you don't seem to have a problem with your organs being harvested anyway right? So maybe your body won't help save that woman's life, but because of your wonderful tissues, she looks much prettier now, doesn't she? And isn't that important?

I don't care about any of that. I say have fun cutting me up and stealing my insides for profit. If someone wants to go to that much work, they've deserved it IMO. I wouldn't do that job for a quarter million.

I told them yes when I reapplied for my license last summer, but I haven't filled out the back of the card yet. I may when I go home for spring break, seeing as I need two witnesses to sign it, which would be my mom and my dad.

With EMS, once you start working on a patient, you have to do everything within your training to help that patient. However, if you deem the situation to be threatening to your own life safety, you do not have to try to work on a patient.
