Best movie review ever. (300)

In a bunch of interviews, the filmmakers kept getting asked about trying to hide messages about politics and such, and they responded with 'There isn't any hidden meanings in this, we just wanted to make the film really badass.' They even said how they didn't make the fighting very accurate for the period because they wanted to focus more on making the movie look awesome. I'm sure people will find meanings in the movie but I don't think they were intentional.
Think while it's still legal.

Does it needed to be intentional? I think it's even more interresting if that's just how it happened. The masculine/feminine dualogy was unmistakeable.

So this is how 300 went for me:

first 5 minutes, lights in the theatre on.

duration of the movie the guy behind me screaming "DAYUM THAT (blank) IS goNNA DIEE!!"

Soooo I couldnt hear a lot of the dialouge.

I (and a few other people) asked him to shut up a few times... but that only worked for a few minutes at a time.

So then out of nowhere someone threw a glass bottle from almost the back middle of the crowd at the screen. They did this at the scene where they allllll get pwned and the arrows rain down on them They left their so I guess they thought the movie was over.

When the movie finally ended, the credits only stayed up long enough to show the directors name. I heard someone mocking the annoying guy and laughed a little bit about it.

The second we get out of the theatre doors i see the annoying guy staring at the kid who had been mocking him. They seem pretty angry and then fists start flying... After watching 300 it was a pretty week fight consisting of mostly pushing, but then some huge guy behind me shouted out "THIS IS SPARRRTAAAAAAAAAAAAA"

Theeeeen the cops showed up and took care of the annoying guy.

So in the end, while he was pretty freaking obnoxious, that last moment outside of the theatre was awesome.

just got home from seeing it. it was playing on six screens and all sold out at the theater. The Imax showings were sold out until tuesday.

the movie.....well my jaw was dropped for most of it. there were alot moments in the movie where i just had to utter the words "ok that was bad ***" out loud.

i had this strange feeling like i watched a movie that would be the standards of 5-10 years from now. it just felt so ahead of the times.

even the costume designs were great.

This is the same theatre that had to give out tickets because they messed the movie up once before?

I had similarly awesome experiences at the theatre.

This guy at the theater wouldn't stop staring at me while I was in line. Lots of people stare at me, but he was especially rude about it. So I turned to my girlfriend and said very loudly: "HONEY, I THINK THAT GUY OVER THERE IS CHECKING ME OUT." His neck nearly snapped from the rotation.

After the movie got out, 2 guys were armwrestling on a garbage can while 20 guys stood around cheering. After they were done, I asked the guys "So does that mean his penis is bigger?" They all gave me evil looks and the one guy says "Shut up, kid." Having just watched 300's witty remarks, I replied "That won't make your penis longer, either." They all shut up. ^_^

you should have shouted "Leeroy Jenkins" and ran into the fight.

I was pretty disappointed with 300. While there were certainly some moments of bad-assery, most of the action became pretty repetitive. The never-ending cycle of speeding up for the sword swing and then slow-mo for the blood spray got pretty tedious. The visual styles of the movie, while striking at first, soon became bland. The entire movie is black, yellow, brown, and red. There are no other colors, except for a little bit of blue in one scene. The music was pretty generic, and the bits that tried to use electric guitar sounded really pathetic and out of place.

The only interesting character was the queen, as pretty much all of the little plot there is involves her and the politics at home. The only other highlight of the characters/acting is the constant ferocity and intensity of the king.

300 is certainly a "throwaway epic." It's all guts and glory, with very little heart. So if you have testicles and are hungry for some violence, 300 is certainly the movie for you. But if you're looking for a little depth or meaning behind the brutality, try another film.

I saw it on ****ing IMAX.

It was win. 300 was freaking win.

Saw it yesterday. I thought it was going to suck, so my expectations weren't very high. But then it turned out to be all sorts of flavors of awesome. I loved the blood spurting effect.

How could you think it was going to suck? Honestly. How.

It was about 500 thousand different kinds of sweet, awesome, badass, and sexy (the ladies). Though the oracle thing kinda creeped me out. I think this is easily the best movie so far this year.

300 was awesome, and I'm seeing it again tonight.

It reminded me of playing R:TW, and using the Spartans to fight off a huge army.

(Not to mention agreeing with everything everyone else said.)

It could have done without so much nudity. Anyone else feel really awkward during some of those scenes?

Why do people feel weird when movies have nudity? WTF? Are you a man, or a FEMALE BABY!?

I'm just saying, when all your friends from school (guys and gals) are sitting there next to you while two people are having sex on the screen. It's a little weird.

Maybe it's just me.

It's not just you. The other scenes with nudity didn't bother me though, I hardly notice it most of the time.

I really want to see the movie, but the thing I don't want to see is a bunch of college fratboy *******s calling themselves Spartans when they're drunk off their ***. From the theatregoer experiences in this thread, it sounds like some Massassians have witnessed it already.

The Toronto scociabank theatre was sold out for the IMAX thing. Nobody really yelled, just a collective "tee-hee" at the 'civil' line.

I'd go see the movie but I can still feel the *** woopin' delivered to my great-great-great-(etc, etc)-grandfather, so I think I'll pass. Every morning I wake up and feel a bit of a tingle in my rear end and I curse Sparta.

I went to a theater that is literally a five minute walk from the Ohio State freshman dorms... I think that had a lot to do with it.

...just saw it again, with a drunk guy behind me screaming "CATAPULTS" the whole time.

Still an awesome movie, though.

WARNING [/color]: differing opinion ahead!

Meh. The dialogue was so bad at times that it really broke the mood.

"TRAITOR!"

That easily turned into...

"A WITCH! A WITCH! BURN HER! BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURN HER!"

The action was okay, but alot of the "tense" scenes are very predictable, such as when they spear the rhino and it slides to a stop at the Spartans' feet - which seems like a rip-off of Legolas killing the elephant-like beast in RotK .

Seriously. Little to no story, no memorable quotes (or, at least, not compared to films such as Kingdom of Heaven or Gladiator), and repetitive and generally uninspired action sequences left me wondering why people thought it was a good movie.

Sure, it had its moments, such as the wall of Persians, the "I brought more soldiers" scene, the "we can be civizlied, can't we?" scene as well as the general art direction and costumes.

But, overall? 3/10

I agree 100%, Wolfy.

Also, I was really disappointed with the Oliphaunt and Rhino scenes... they could have been so cool, but they kind of just montaged their way through them.

You hated 300 but you liked Kingdom of Heaven? WTF? Kingdom of Heaven was the biggest waste of an 'Epic' in ages. The story was all over the place, the characters never developed, it was awful. 300 was based on a comic, and it stayed faithful to that comic. It was a good adaptation, and a badass movie, even if the plot was a toss away.

Have you seen the Director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven, Vic?

And to be honest, I thought most of the guys bodies were pretty weird and not very attractive. Pretty much only Xerses and that son that died were the only hot ones...
2007-03-10, 11:17 PM #78
In Kingdom of Heaven, when Sibylla poisoned her son , I was moved.

In 300, when the Spartans died, I couldn't care less. Meh. They were dead. Now the Greeks would move against Xerxes in full force and crush him like a bug. When the son dies , I couldn't care less, because the characters weren't developed.

The action scenes, while nicely choreographed, were the same thing over and over and over and over again - hacking off limbs, impaling people, slicing and dicing. The first battle was neat, because it was extremely well organized - the Spartans moved as one unit.

After that, it was a hack-and-slash Diablofest. click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click click

In Kingdom of Heaven I didn't even know any of the characters names. They were on and off the screen so fast and there were far too many of them to care. The fight scenes were boring and the dialog was generic epic jargon. The movie was just a giant boring cliche with a crap story and no development. 300 was a simple story even if it was a throw away story, and the action delivered.
Think while it's still legal.
2007-03-10, 11:36 PM #80
It wasn't a good action film. The wall of dead Persians was ultimately useless since all it did was bury one guy (who easily dug his way out from underneath it). As I said, beyond the first battle, it was "rush out and kill ****" over, and over, and over, and over again. There was no strategy. There was no "oh, hey, that was pretty clever and cool".

It was "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH I'VE GOT A LANCE AND A SHIELD AND NOW I'VE THROWN MY LANCE FOR THE FIFTIETH TIME AND IT HIT SOMEONE AND NOW I'LL TAKE OUT MY SWORD AND AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!"

I also enjoy your comparison of a movie about religious tolerance and the institutionalization of religion being cliché, but apparently a movie that's mindless hacking and slashing is original.

I'm really not certain how you could say Kingdom of Heaven had no development. It had a full-circle evolution of Balian, the main character. Sibylla was well-written, and Guy was a great villain.
