"What was Jerusalem worth to you? Nothing....and everything!"
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

Overall, it probably gets 3 stars out of 4. Not the greatest thing since sliced bread, but faaarr from being horrible. That being said, certain parts of the movie were easily 654,322 stars out of 4. The action scenes were beautifully shot, and the look of the film cannot be matched. I did not come into viewing the film expecting a think piece, or a character study. I wanted to see an epic movie, and that's what I got. Well worth the long drive to Racine to the nearest Ultrascreen.

The director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven is probably the best epic in the last 15 years, barring Gladiator.

I personally thought Gladiator to be a fairly average film. And although I didn't see Kingdom of Heaven all those mentioning it seem to hold the former in high praise. Curious.

I find it funny that it seems you went into the theatre expecting more than that.

Just saw it in IMAX. Gratuitous violence = win.

Totally unrealistic, though. Yes, 300 Spartans held that pass for three days, but, dammit, they got everything else wrong! And their tactics were atrocious. On both sides. The Spartans were morons for every stepping a single foot out of the pass, and the Persians could have totally pwnd them by doing nothing more than sending their little bomb guys first and having them toss them over the heads of the front Spartans. Or they could have just filled the opening with arrows. Send a small force of foot soldiers in to disrupt the phalanx, then open up on them with the arrows while the Spartans fight the foot soldiers.
Wikissassi sucks.

Oh, I should mention. I thought it was awesome. But it wasn't as good as Kingdom of Heaven, no. That has more to do with KOH being so awesome than 300 not being awesome.

And whomever said it was based on a comic : You dolt. It's a true story. It's what made the Spartans famous, and put them in control of southern Greece until the Macedonian armies under Alexander the Great's father unified the country.
Wikissassi sucks.

Yeah, but this movie is still based on a comic.

I was expecting cool action sequences. I was expecting clever battle strategems. I was expecting fluid combat sequences.

What I wasn't expecting was the same battle over and over again. I was expecting a movie that was going to be guts, glory, and action - and part of a good action film is coming up with unique and distinct fighting sequences.

The 'same battle' never happened more than once. It may only seem that way to you, but each one was different.

You went in expecting more than screaming. Hence what I quoted and why you didn't enjoy it.

I think it was beautiful. It was traditional battle sequences, it wasn't LotR, with Spartans, it was a story that mixed the tales of men and the truth of men into a single, fluid piece of imagery that showed just how badass the Spartans could be while not boring you out of your mind. Yeah, some of it was fake. Yeah, some of it was exaggerated. But a lot of it was true, and a lot of it was true to form.

This is why I don't go into movies with expectations anymore. More often than not, you're disappointed, and end up disliking it even though it was a good film because of that.

Oddly enough, they did "accurately" add in a bunch of historical tidbits. For example:
  • Pushing Persian messengers into pit
  • Persians: "Put down your weapons!"
    Leonidas: "Come and get them!"
  • Leonidas: "Eat a hearty breakfast, men, because tonight, we dine in [HADES]!"
  • The scene that shows Leonidas dying has the narrator saying "Go, tell the Spartans, stranger passing by, that by Spartan law, here we lie" alludes to the actual monument that's at the battle site that says the same thing
In addition, the "increasing level of difficulty" thing was also in fact accurate. Xerxes sent in the Medes first, called them back, sent in the Immortals that night, called them back, etc. Pretty much all of the FIGHTS involve the correct people and are in the correct order.

also the bit about their arrows blocking out the sun, then he says 'so much the better, we shall fight in the shade', that happened. and what his wife says to leonidas before he leaves is what all spartan mothers told their children when they went off to war, 'come home with your shield or upon it.'

how do you evolve in a circle? surely you'd have to move forward.

The Persians should have shot arrows while the Spartans were fighting land troops.

I do that all the time in Rome: Total War, but sometimes I take out my own troops. :(

I saw it twice in three days. Also, this week was 'spirit week' at our school, where everyone dresses up crazy, and two guys dressed up as spartans. It was a very good costume, and they were even pretty ripped for guys our age. It was epic.
DO NOT WANT.

I saw it last night. It kicked my ***, it was so good. I feel like a girlie man after watching it.

Pure awesome. Great combination of art and action, a feat which very few movies pull off. All epic stuff.

I just saw it last night and it was amazing. I agree fully with the 3 stars out of 4 on whole with 1,000,000 stars for some sequences.

The first battle was probably my favorite. Shields up, stab, shields down, repeat!
