How long do you keep your computer up?
2007-03-13, 6:05 PM #1
More specifically, how long do you keep your computer up before you have to restart?

My laptop usually starts lagging after about 25 days of uptime. The longest without a restart i've ever had it up was about 45 days when I first got it.

My desktop has only been up about a week so far, so I can't say how long that one will go without a restart yet.

I always turn it off when I go to sleep... never had it on for more than about 24 hours at a time.

I keep my Linux box running fairly consistently (overnight downloads, backups, etc.), but my Windows desktop is usually only on for about 8 hours in a day.

Always. I do restart occasionally, though.

In the past I would rarely shut down my computer and would only reboot about once a week or so, but now that I've tightened my budget, I shut down my computer while I'm at work and while I sleep.

Yep. Sometimes I shut it off at night...if I'm not downloading anything...if my fan is acting up (power supply fan's bearings seem to be going out, but it's quiet at the moment)...but it's usually on.

I turn it off before going to bed.

Unless I'm working on it, or it effs up, it's on.

I only reboot it when Vista forces me to, or when the power goes out for an extended period.

My linux box stays on even longer than that.

I only turn it on when I need to use it. I've never understood why anyone would leave it on.

I only shut down when the power is out for a long time, or there's a a mandatory software update.

I have enough crap on startup that it takes a little while (antivirus/etc)...plus I'm often downloading something (768/128 DSL..not exactly fast)..and sometimes I just don't bother to shut it off. :P

I had a Win98 machine pretending to be a router that was up for 45 days.

Other than that, I turn 'em off when I'm not going to use it for a while.

My server stays up until the power goes out. My desktop get updated on a regular basis, so its uptime is usually no more than a few weeks or even days. I usually don't leave my laptop on for more than a few hours, but sometimes I leave it on for a few days.

The short answer: as long as possible.

Now? No more than 2 weeks. Inevitably something ****s up around the 2 week mark and I have to reboot. But when I first had it, I remember getting uptimes of over a month. That seemed to completely go away after I formatted and installed XP though.

I've had 3 month up times on this box. Unfortunately, it's not what it used to be. Now I can only manage a week. It goes right back on, though.

Only when I am using it or downloading. For my needs I really no longer need a computer built for gaming. I really need to sell it.

p.s. pm for specs if interested :eng101:

I put my laptop in sleep mode when I put it in my bag. So the RAM is still up. I run Linux. I usually end up rebooting because I lock it up by pushing applications a bit too far. :saddowns:

As for my laptop, I just hibernate all the time.

Since my last reinstall, my max uptime has been 5 days out of about 11 weeks.

I always switch off my computer when I go to sleep, and on days like this when I'm basically home all the time it's up for like 15 hours a day (9AM to midnight).

It's on unless something gets screwed, it's starting to run slow, I have to restart for an update or I'm going to be away from it for awhile.

I just put my laptop on sleep when I go to bed. That way it zips right back on when I wake up, and I can leave myself little reminders on a Notepad window :D
2007-03-14, 5:46 AM #35
At home, I shut it off at bedtime, and my PC at work is only on for 8 or 10 hours a day.

I hibernate the laptop sometimes. Only if I'm on the go and need to move, but aren't really done with what I'm doing.

I usually leave my laptop on for a couple weeks at a time. It's just so easy to close the lid and forget.
2007-03-14, 7:23 AM #38
I used to just let my PC run forever until I really needed to restart it. So it could go for weeks at a time before even getting a restart.

Nowadays, I just turn it off nightly.

I only restart if an install/update requires it. Otherwise, it's on 24/7.

...I turn it off when I'm not using it. Longest I think it's been on is about 15 hours.
