We just kinda got dealt a demoralizing blow. We were all under the impression that this was going to be a short deployment, But we got told today we'd be here till next year. Just as that information was being put out, We got RPG'd and took small arms fire from all directions. I was asleep and I woke up to the RPG blast, then I heard the .50's lighting everything up and everyone was grabbing IBA's and weapons so I put mine on and went to the TOC. As I was walking out of the barracks room I saw a guy who was on guard on the roof being brought down, He got hit with shrapnel. The 1Sgt was talking to him to make sure he was cohesive all he could say was "1sgt, Reenlistment can go to hell."
Then later in the afternoon one of our mounted patrols got hit with an EFP, which seriously wounded a few people. I mean, They'll recover but it's just the fact that they got hit. Until now we hadn't come into any serious contact, but Hajj is unleashing hell today.
As soon as I got to the TOC I got on the radio and stayed there for about 2 hours in full kit. Friggin Sergeant Major comes walking in asking me about the situation while reports were still coming in and I was trying to explain to him that I didn't have any relevant information at the time. He's like "WHY DON'T YOU STAND UP AND GO TO PARADE REST WHEN YOU TALK TO ME?" all I could think was.. Damn people could be dying out here and you're yelling at me because I'm not standing at parade rest while I'm listening to the radio.
If my smoking bothers you, don't breathe.
