http://home.comcast.net/~10kg22moller87/Navy_CAS.wmv

An FA-18 over Fallujah, taking out a multitude of ground target with a missile strike.

It's kind of awe inspiring. Sure, 40 people died, but that plane was standing so far off, they never even heard or saw it coming.

It's just..... kind of interesting... not cool/neat... but interesting all the same. If this is considered objectionable, I'll remove it... or Admins can close the thread.

that's....nice.

It does intrigue me - what kind of person do you have to be to be able to pull a trigger (push a button, whatever) that will kill 40 people who are just wandering down the street? Is this normal? Because I damn sure couldn't do it.

I don't know if you had the sound turned up enough to hear the conversation the pilot had with his superior, but he was ordered to do so. And from the sounds of it, it was a group of insurgents that were escaping from a ground engagement they had prior.

Yes, that is exaclty how you msut act when you are in the military. I'm not sure about britain, but i know in america you have to have a personality test before being accepted. As my dad put it, you have to be a little bit insane.

...assuming what Freelancer said is right, knowing that they were just shooting at guys on the ground isn't enough to be a threat? Should they have targets on their backs or be holding signs saying "Will Kill American On Sight"? How would you qualify a threat? (And no, I'm not trying to patronize you).

no, no no no. they'd already designated that building as a target, and more than likely had men on the ground who had spotted/laser designated it... i'm sure those guys were just running away... they weren't innocents (to the extent of my knowledge)

yeah keep this thread civil please.

It's an interesting philosophical question.. about the ability to end multiple lives with the press of a button, and it hinges quite drastically on the situation... which we know little about from the video alone. They could have been insurgent fleeing a firefight, they could have been anyone. But I'm going to go with the most logical assumption that they were NOT civilians simply strolling down the boulevard.

Shut up you whiny hippy.

Sorry, couldn't resist [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Anyway, I would have to assume they knew that those people were targets. There is probably a whole lot that we don't know about that operation, so to assume is pointless.

How would you have liked to have been the guy that released the atom bombs over Japan, knowing full well that 99% of the casualties would be civilians, and a heck of a lot more deaths to boot.

And yet, that action may have saved countless more lives than an invasion of Japan. Who knows how many American lives were saved by this action?

But yeah, I'm not stupid and completely naive, I'm aware that they weren't likely to just be picking people off for fun. But I still don't know if I could do it. The fact that the people giving the orders are so detached from what's actually going on on the ground, and the soldiers just have to obey without question. It's....strange to me.

It's not insane, it's following your damn orders, because if you second guess your officers two things can occur: 1, you lose time that may be crucial to the mission and/or peoples lives, including yours, and 2, the commanders lose authority and only chaos will eventually follow.

Like I said before, I may sound like I'm being the bad guy here but it's the truth. As human beings, of course we should all hold a certain respect for life. But sometimes I think society holds too much. You have to take the situation logically, and in that scenario the best and most reasonable thing to do is to do what you're told. You don't think; that's the job of the guys commanding you.

Pilots have it fairly easier than grunts because of the fact that they have so much distance between them and the targets. It's much easier to think of those people as just dots on the ground than someone on the ground seeing them as the people they are.

"Whoa Dude"... if thats all he could say after killing 40 or 50 people... Jeez...Sounde to me like they had fun doing that. And I love how the people who bombed Hiroshima didn't even know exactly what their bomb would or could possibly do. All wars are based around Racism or the hate of other types of people. I can't stand that. Grrr, that stuff really makes me mad.

I agree with MavisPoo, I could never kill someone without having a good reason too, which would only end up being someone shooting at me or one of my friends or family. Then I would have no problem.
