How did you pay for college?
2007-04-09, 6:27 PM #1
Or, better yet, how are you planning on paying for college?

I plan on a career in 'not-making-very-much-money', but it will take a good bit of school first. :psyduck:
Anyone else in that boat?

Parents, and a small scholarship which I'm probably about to lose, so probably mostly loans.

Loans.

Lots and lots and lots and lots of loans. About £6,500 for the first year.

I'm in debt for around 85,000 dollars.

Here's hoping I make a lot of money once I'm out of school. My parents don't make enough money to throw any down on college, and I didn't want them to have to get any more loans in their names, so I'm going to have to pay it all off.

Student loan I guess. I don't really think about it. Australia has a system where you can defer and get the government to pay your fees. Then you start paying it back when you earn a certain amount of money.

eg

Code:
Income Percent that goes towards student loan.

Below $38,149 Nil
$38,149-$42,494 4.0%
$42,495-$46,838 4.5%
$46,839-$49,300 5.0%

Loans, grants, and scholarships. I think one of the scholarships might even be just because my grandfather went here way back in the early 1940s. But its mostly being paid wit the loans.

Right now I'm going with the loans route, but I'm considering following one of my friends and donating to a sperm bank.

I pay for my own school working part time during school and full time in the summer. Once I start medical school I plan on burying myself in loans though. I plan on being debt free before I start medical school though. So not even a car payment.
Life is beautiful.

yeah, I'm going to have to sell myself on the street to pay for grad school. I'm trying not to think about that stage

Dunno, probably a loan. Im only doing a 9 or 12 month course anyway, so its gonna be around $14,000. And its really close to my parents house so thats covered. Then I just need to get a job in town as a shipwright and start paying it off. Joy.

Well, for the first year, my parents and loans are paying for the cost. The coming years will be covered, hopefully, by scholarships. Also, having a job during the summer may cover some smaller costs, like supplies.

Damn tuition around $42,000 a year + supplies.

Parents pay half, I pay the other half by working part time during the school year and full time during the summer. So far no debt. I'm getting a car in June so that might change.

I have a few student loans, but I'm taking a bunch out to go to Englnd this summer, and I'm hoping to do the same for vienna next year. I'll basically be paying back college loans until the day I die but it's worth it.

HECS

Or Higher Education Contribution Sceme, as the government calls if officially. It's a scheme that's open to every Aussie, the Australian government pays your tuition and then you pay them back for as long as it takes. They automatically deduct it out of your pay once you make a certain amount. I'm currently paying my $14,000 loan back at about $20 a week.

I received grants that covered most of my tuition, but I also borrowed $6,000 in the form of a loan to help pay for things that I needed during school (I worked a low-paying part-time job). I'll have my loan paid off by December of this year if everything works out as planned, which it usually does. My parents were too poor to help me.

Student loans to pay for tuition and accommodation, and my parents are supporting me with a bit of money each month. Still looking and applying for jobs until I get one that'll help me support myself next year. Disability Living Allowance helps somewhat, too, since as I'm still a student I don't need to pay for medication.

my parents paid my tuition fee's of £1k per year for 4 years (BSc + masters) and I had to pay for everything else...studying in london that meant that my parents got the better deal :P

The student loan the government gives out here in the UK just covers the cost of accommodation (for me at least beens my parents earn enough that I just get the minimum allowed). For the cost of actually buying food and living I took a gap year before uni, saved some money up and also worked during the summer break, in the end I made it through pretty well considering how bad some people got in debt.

So in the end I finished university with about a £15k loan to the government that I will have to start paying back when I starting earning over 10k a year, oh the joy :(
