PS3 good?
2007-04-22, 5:00 PM #81
I don't see if it matters if the Wii would have broken record sales or not...the Wii is not competing with the PS3 and vice versa. The PS3's only real competition is the 360.

Yeah Nintendo says that all the time but I don't buy it.

In reality it's not. It's nearly an entirely different form of entertainment.

In reality, yes, it actually is.

Well... I don't know... I watched a friend of mine play a PS3 and he looked like he was playing videogames. I watched another friend play a Wii and he looked like he was doing aerobics.

Yeah, that makes sense to me. I dunno how they've done it, but I don't trust those sales figures at all.
The PS3 is available everywhere, and nobody seems to have one.
Where as the Wii is nowhere to be found.. except in everybody's houses

Your sample space is far too small to make any kind of generalization regarding sales of a gaming console.
2007-04-22, 10:38 PM #90
They've made a lot of PS3's, but haven't sold even half of them. They overproduced because they were scared of shortages due to the scarcity of the components, and also to hold a monopoly on the blu-ray market.

And the PS3 isn't competing with the Wii. Both Sony and Nintendo state as much, and if those of who state otherwise are as much of a Nintendo fanboy as you claim, you'd take their word for it. Honestly, the Wii is in an entirely different league than the PS3, and they're not really comparable at all, other than they play games.

I think you summed it up there. If I have X dollars and are in the market for a new console then I have a choice between a PS3, a 360, or a Wii. As video game consoles they're all inherently competing agaisnt each other. Yes they offer slightly different experiences, but essentially they're the same thing. They're substitutes, you buy one or the other.

To be honest, the PS3 isn't even really marketed at gamers--it's marketed more as a HTPC and a Blu-Ray player than anything. At least that's Sony intention.

sony's strategy is bulletproof because the HTPC market is booming

Of course they are targeting gamers. Their slogan is 'PLAY B3YOND' and all the commercials are like "THE PS3 CAN COOK A MEAN BURGER AND PUT OUT SOME BADASS GRAPHICS ON IT'S NINE MILLION KILOWANG PER SECOND PROCESSOR! BECAUSE WE'RE ALL ABOUT GAMING AND NINE MILLION KILOWANGS IS A LOT OF GAMING POWER!"

I'm pretty sure the point here is that Nintendo is not targeting gamers. It's targeting everyone.

It's no joke when they say it could cook burgers. That thing runs hot.

Neither camp is making a big deal out of this because the 360 gets insanely hot as well.

Yeah, if you stick your hand behind it after a long session it's pretty damned hot.

I've only seen a PS3 in person at somebody's house once, and I didn't touch it. Is the case metal or plastic?

Uh, actually, from the beginning they've been touting Blu-Ray, and the fact that it does more than play video games (play b3yond?), and how the Cell proc is perfect for HTPC. You have no idea what you're talking about and are inserting your own thoughts to fit the situation. Sorry, even ask Jon`C if you don't believe me, or hell ANYONE who's paid attention to Sony at all in the past 3 years (the PSP was a big hint of where they were going with the PS3).

Not the newer ones, but older model 360s were having components MELT inside, and the powerbrick was, and still is insanely hot. It gets really really hot.

Then that tiny space behind my bookshelf where I crammed it must stay REALLY cold. I've packed the whole console up after playing for upwards of three hours and it gets warm, not "really really hot".

You're either quite lucky, lying, or impervious to heat. Seriously, my friend's 2nd gen 360 still gets rather warm (although not HOT hot) and that's with the "increased" cooling, and he has it spread out with the powerbrick on the floor.

I bought mine beginning of the year, so I'm not sure what gen it is, but I'm FAR from lying. It'll get warm to the touch, but not "****, that's hot...", and it's by far cooler than the backside of the 360.

I think 3rd gen, in which case okay :p

I thought you had a launch model.

Hellz no. I was poor when it launched, and I couldn't justify the purchase until I saw more of the library. =P

My problem now is there's more games I want than I have money to buy and play. Arcade and the Demos from Live help a bit with that though.

I do.

It's ok.
Like I said in my earlier post, I mainly use it for PS2 games that I never played (I never had a PS2).

Anyone that's ever actually used a Wii will know it's entirely different to PS2/PS3/Xbox.

It's entirely entirely awesome, but it's isn't going to replace the console standard. It's more a question of "PS3 and Wii?" or "Xbox 360 and Wii?". Regardless of whether you get a PS3 or a 360, you will also want a Wii eventually too. It's awesome for parties.

yeah, the wii is a totally different gaming experience. it is a console, yes, but comparisions to the 360/ps3 would be like apples and oranges.

While it is quite true that the Wii is great for parties with Sports, Rayman, Warioware etc., I'm starting to appreciate it's quality as a single player console. Twighlight Princess, Super Paper Mario, and Godfather are all a blast to play, and they all do quite well utilizing the Wii control scheme. I'm curious to see how RE4Wii comes out.

That's surprising considering the fans on the 360 sound like a 747 taking off when you turn the thing on. The PS3 runs nice a quiet.

What is this noise?

I don't know what's going on with your 360s, but mine (bought in February) is nice and quiet and it runs quite cool. It really doesn't get any warmer than my original Xbox did after extended play and it's definitely not as loud.

Same here. There's an initial blast from the fans when it starts up, but that's over within 2 seconds or so. Then it's pretty freaking quiet.
