FETUS! Not BABY!

Is there a difference?

Have fetuses truly been boiled down to a simple organ?
2007-04-21, 1:24 PM #43
Yes there is a difference. A fetus is a part of a woman's body until she gives birth to it. If that fetus is malfunctioning in any way shape of form, the woman should have the right to have it removed, just like a kidney.

I only disapprove of abortion when it's used as an HURRR WE'VE BEEN IRRESPONSIBLE LOL FIX IT PLZ.

Seriously, if it was consentual sex they should both be forced to keep it. Nothing teaches responsibility better than the THREAT of actual responsibility.

In theory that sort of thing is a nice idea, Rob, but in reality it would just add to the poverty level eventually or the kid winds up in an orphanage and goes bonkers when he gets out. You can't just say you should MAKE people be responsible because I've seen what happens when people have to raise kids they didn't want. The kids turn out to be ****ups.

Honestly, this comes down to fate. I don't think anyone has a specific fate to be one thing or another when they're born.

So? It won't take long before people realize this **** sucks and it won't be near the problem it is now.

The people who were of age when social security was created didn't get money.

It's basically the same thing... Sorta.. :P

Yeah, ok. The kids gonna be poor so lets kill him.

It's not a kid, or a him, at the stage in which an abortion is performed.

People didn't learn that in the time before abortion was legal, so why would they learn all of a sudden if the law was changed now?

Antony is arguing that a fetus is not a human until the cord is cut outside of the womb? I beg to differ.
The word "fetus" is a de-humanizing term, and who knows what kind of potential people (possibly geniuses) we denied to live for no fault of their own?
This is retarded, and I mean drooling at the mouth

I don't mean to beat a dead horse, but I'm still curious about anti-abortionists views on the issue that I posted about. If abortion is the quivalent of killing, then what do you propose in order save the millions of embryos that are naturally lost every year?

i just want to know how many have been in a situation where going through with a pregnancy while the moral 'right' thing to do can impact a person's life. you can't say **** til you've been there

Natural loss and intentional killing are totally different things.

Well, obviously I'm in favor of banning natural deaths for people of all ages. :v:

Right... but if a child were born with a disease or condition that would result in a natural death, you would insist that it be treated, wouldn't you? You wouldn't just let it die.

I really don't understand how you can justify forcing people to take a foetus to full-term just because it's a "potential person". Fertility treatments often involve the fertilisation of a lot of embryos of which only a few are ever used. Perhaps parents going in for that should be forced to try to carry every single one to term even if it's 2 dozen of the buggers. Every single gamete has the potential to be a person. Maybe we should ban masturbation and force women to get pregnant every cycle to avoid the unnecessary loss of potential humans in their periods.

Yeah, there's got to be a cut off point, I definitely have a problem with aborting something that has the potential to survive outside of the womb (as with late abortions compared to premmie babies), but a foetus without a developed nervous system is not a human being in any sense of the word.

If it's used as an "oops" button, yeah I have issues with abortions. It's people not taking responsibilities for their actions that drives me mad.

look at inner cities though, its one thing for someone who can care for their children but the majority of pregnancies that should be aborted in societies views are the single girls who are just teenagers. Bill Cosby touched on this a couple times. It's hard to really say if it's right or wrong but in an environment where a children lives by crime what would have been so wrong to have a 300 dollar operation in order to quell the poverty stricken crime rates.

You're assuming it can be saved. I'd also like to make the distinction that an embryo is not a fetus, the baby hasn't been conceived.

Uhhh...conception means that sperm HAS joined with egg to produce the growing zygote/embryo/fetus.

I've come to understand abortion is a non-issue. No one will ever agree about its regulation, so the best thing we can do is compromise and move on.

Well, shouldn't anti-abortion groups be frantically researching a way to save all of those dying "babies?" Shouldn't anti-abortionists be asking the government to fund studies on how to save the "babies?" If they truly believe that "life starts at conception," then this problem would be much more pressing than the issue of abortion.

Maybe good Christian couples shouldn't be procreating at all, since it will inevitably result in the death of "babies."

If someone is going to claim that abortion is murder, then they need to put their money where their mouth is.

And as Gandalf already pointed out, an embryo is definately the product of conception.

Quote:
The English pronunciation was prevalent during the 14th and 15th centuries with the word being variously spelled as lieftenant, lyeftenant or luftenant. It may have originated from a mistaken reading of the 'u' as a 'v' (u and v originally were written as the same letter), with v eventually assimilating in voice to /f/. Something similar happened in Greek (with υ (upsilon), originally pronounced /u/, in some cases being pronounced /v/), and British education on the Greek classics may have also encouraged the pronunciation. Some sources state that the original French word lieu (i.e. "place", since "lieu tenant" literally means "place holder" in old French) had an alternative form spelt and pronounced lieuf, and that the most common modern form retains the former spelling 'Lieutenant' and the latter pronunciation, 'Leftenant'.

I'm against fertility clinics as well, for that very reason. Can't get pregnant the old fashioned way? There are plenty of kids you can adopt.

So, yes, your entire argument was entirely pointless.

You know some people actually want a kid that they made themselves. You're against fertility clinics and abortion, but you think putting a kid up for adoption is perfectly acceptable? Ruin a life instead of stopping it from ever happening. Fine by me if you think that's so much better.

If my argument had anything to do with fertility clinics... then yes, I suppose it would be pointless. However, my argument has NOTHING to do with fertility clinics. Where did you get that idea?

I AM talking about the "old fashioned way" of getting pregnant. 60-80 naturally conceived embryos never implant and are flushed out by a woman's menstrual flows unnoticed. So again I propose the question: what do you think should be done to save these millions of "babies?"
2007-04-23, 6:47 PM #77
Nothing, because nothing can be done. And, a woman isn't going to conceive 60-80 times without a birth unless something is very, very wrong medically. That's a conception every period for at least five years. Yeah, right! Furthermore, those zygotes that fail to attach themselves to the uteran wall die a natural death, and are dead long before their fate could be detected.

Several problems.
A) You assume all children up for adoption are unwanted.
B) You assume putting a child up for adoption ruins the child's life.
C) You assume no life at all is better than this 'ruined' life.

Please stop assuming things. It only makes an *** out of you and you.

A) Is there another reason?
B) Conditions in orphanages are terrible and they recieve little guidance.
C) It is.
