Nice gaming rig for $800, any suggestions?
2007-05-07, 8:10 PM #2
Not going to happen for $800 is my only advice.

Keep your current **** and don't waste your money. How many times I'll have to say it before you listen: about a billion. Laughing at you as you fail at life and monetarily: priceless.

Try Costco if you're desperate.

You can pick up a Winchester Model 70, used, for under $800. Far more fun than any stupid old computer. Any decent gun shop should have a few. Get the 30-06 edition.

Yeah, it's not possible. You wanted our opinion, we gave it, stop whining.

Well it's a good thing we can all explain in friendly terms how unlikely it is to get a good gaming PC for under $800 without bashing the new guy.

My advice: Either upgrade your computer, or raise your budget.

Finally, someone who isn't an ***.

Well thanks to everyone who wasn't an ***, i just asked a question, anyway this is what i'm building for $800.

AMD X2 4200+
7950gt
2gb ddr2
160 gb hdd

It's an big upgrade from the AMD 3700+, 7800gt, and 2gb of regular ddr i have now. Thanks for the help.

...what? No it isn't. I doubt if you could notice the difference. Of course, you will claim to, because you won't want to admit otherwise.

For $800 you could have at least built a Core 2 Duo system which would have been a noticeable improvement for heavy multitasking.

Edit: I just realized your old CPU wasn't dual-core, so that is beneficial. However, replacing the rest of your system? Totally unnecessary. The cheapest Core 2 Duo also blows the 4200 out of the water.

No, actually, it's not. You're just going to waste a bunch of time and money, because you want to upgrade, but don't want to spend enough money to actually get better parts. But, then, you obviously deserve every bit of it. Have fun.

Agreed. You're barely going to notice a switch from DDR to DDR2 at the 2 gigs of RAM level, and the video card upgrade is probably the very next model.

I'd just spend <$250 on a really good Core 2 duo processor and leave it at that.

http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html?modelx=33&model1=487&model2=469&chart=165

I see a noticeable difference...
2007-05-08, 7:15 PM #20
Not so much with sane settings...

Also, you could have just bought a new video card. :downs:

And you are ignoring the devastatingly huge value difference between the C2Ds and the crappy 4200 you got.

Might I ask why you're looking for an upgrade now? What do you have that doesn't run well?

Hah, ask anyone technically inclined and they'll tell you you should. Yeah, that's arrogant, I'm arrogant, but honestly, when I say something you should probably at least heed it because, for the most part I'm trying to help you. Not hurt you. But it's funny watching people waste their money anyways.

You'll get 10fps, MAX. The jump from DDR to DDR2 can actually be much much slower, the 7800GT isn't that much worse thant he 7950, the only thing you got goin is the 4200+

Honestly, if you were gonna spend that money, you could've spent it on a core 2 duo system with an x1950xt.

But no matter what you still WASTED YOUR MONEY.

Now do you see why we were being asses? PS--we told him not to do it, about 5 or 6 of us in another thread. He continues on and wonders why we act like he's retarded.

I'm gunna actually get a 4800 and an 8600gt, i'll compare the two benchmarks when i get the system built.
2007-05-08, 7:57 PM #24
Quit being an AMD fanboy and get a Core 2 Duo. They are vastly superior.

You're wasting your money

You can use everything you have now, and buy a Core2Duo motherboard and processor.

But even that would be a waste.
2007-05-08, 8:00 PM #27
Just buy an x1950xt... that's the only way you're going to see any difference.

An opinion is a little different than suggestions.

But for under 800 bucks you might have a little trouble building one from scratch. Upgrading is another story, though.

STUPID.

8600GT is much much slower than the 7950GT, and you're sacrificing video card power (which is used for, you know, games) for computational power (which it's fairly safe to say you'll never ever use except in SupCom maybe). Stupid.

Why don't you start listening to every single person who's posted here rather than just making really poor decisions?

That video card is most likely going to be SLOWER than your CURRENT card.
You're not going to see any improvement out of that PC at all. You'd have done better throwing that $800 in a fireplace.
2007-05-08, 8:13 PM #31
Or giving me $800.

I could really use $800.

I have bills to pay.
