Jon, they are both hybrid languages. They both compile to intermediate code (bytecode and MSIL) which is then interpreted while a runtime profiler decides which intermediate code to compile to native code. They are both implemented in basically the same way. How can one implementation be so monolithically better than the other?

Sun's implementation could just be weaker.

Also, I'm almost completely certain monolithically is not the word you meant to use there. Because it makes no sense.

I think a more plausible explanation is C# was never plagued by pure interpretation like Java was in its 1.1 days. Somewhere down the line, the JVM obtained JIT compilation but retained its stigma.

You just have to use your imagination a little. It's metaphoric. A monolith is to C#'s VM as a lesser statue is to the JVM.

.NET 2.0 has roughly twice the integer performance as J2SE 1.5, at least.


Cross-platform is another term for 'doesn't use hardware features.'
