What are the worst story and game conventions?

As for games that kept things fresh and non-cliche: I couldn't believe Max Payne when Max realized he was in a video game. I laughed so hard.

Happy endings.
Far too many happy endings.
I want the hero to die. I want the villain to win, to take over, to make you go "wtf"
And I don't mean as a lame bad ending in the case of multiple endings. I want it to be -the- ending, where everything you have worked for has gone wrong, and it is thrown into your face like custard pie with spikes in.

Oh hell no. I'm not gonna waste 50 bucks and 15 hours of playing just to get a crappy ending.

Final Fantasy 7 had a semi- unhappy ending.
Midgar got partially destroyed.
Aeris was still dead.
Without seeing the Advent Children movie, you have no idea of knowing what was going on with the lifestream at the end.

When I was thinking about this, I thought of a lot of things I don't like about games, and tried to think of games that had those things in them. I thought "What games have you doing errands the whole time, then it turns out you were doing the wrong thing? What games have a character who is shadowy, neither evil nor good, who suddenly sides with the protaganist at the last moment and saves the day? What games have bad guys who die, but then it turns out they weren't dead after all? What games have the character being supposedly some kind of elite, awesome person not being able to perfrom certain actions, like jumping? What games try to be 'realistic', but still allow the character to carry several huge machines guns, mutliple handguns, swords, potions, keys, various items and large ammounts of ammo?"

Then I realized, the Metal Gear Solid series contains nearly every lame video game cliche there is, but it still manages to be awesome. So, pretty much take Metal Gear Solid, and pick out the all things in out, and compare them with other games that don't do them quite so well.

I realized the EXACT same thing when I was going through all of the annoying storyline cliches. MG simply does them WELL. That's honestly the only way I can describe why they aren't bad storylines/games.

Final Fantasy 8's ending is crushingly depressing if you skip the credits.

I didin't say crappy. That's why I said and no the multiple endings crap. Because then the bad ending is always crappy and short.
It can be an awesome ending and still be unhappy.

When in films one of the characters says, "We're not in a movie!" or something along the lines. It's nor clever nor funny. As annoying as it is overused.

I hate it when the bad guy poisons the good guy, or plants a bomb on him or something, and then he taunts him by showing him the antidote or detonator etc...

Just shoot him and get it over with.

"oh no, you have just used the poison I used on you to kill me after stealing the antidote from my strongest bodyguard and then taking my one extra poison vial from my secure safe of which I had just revealed the location and password to you!"
