If you bought a Nvidia graphics card and didn't buy a Creative sound card I'd say yes.

I was going to install XP right when I got this laptop, but now I have trouble using XP because it lacks all the nifty things that Vista does.

Vista's interface also does more things faster than XP does.

My video card is the
Asus EN8600GT-2DHT-256 Geforce 8600GT, 256MB, PCI Express, HDTV, Dual DVI

And the sound card is Creative =\

I have a creative soundcard on Vista...

You may not get all the special stuff like Dolby Digital decoding and crap, but the card works.
2007-06-16, 6:39 AM #5
Basic sound stuff works fine on here, but any advanced features don't seem to work.

(It's fine for playing games)
2007-06-16, 6:47 AM #6
Oh I see, that's interesting.
Do you know if we will eventually get the extra stuff?

Knowing Creative, probably not. Unless you have an X-Fi card.
2007-06-16, 6:56 AM #8
I have all the extra stuff for my X-Fi in Vista...
gbk is 50 probably

Mine is indeed, an X-Fi.

You mean I'm actually going to have to upgrade my six year old sound card??

Edit: Vista Enterprise FTW!
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

I'll have you know they still sell my sound card and it's nowhere near 6 years old. Yet they still can't produce decent drivers for it.

Creative?

Decent drivers?

Like that'll ever happen. :(

I'm really not enjoying Vista. No BSOD yet, but it's just nothing special. Aero is annoying, you have to spend 3 hours with a tweak guide making it NOT annoying, and in general it doesn't seem like the 2 new features makes it any better than vista. It's most certainly more stable... I guess? I'm most certainly considering a jump to linux considering all of the exciting things that are happening with games. Worst case, I'll just dual boot Linux and Vista.

I had one BAD experience with Vista, permissions, taking ownership of my external drive, and then going back to XP with it.

It's turned me off from wanting anything to do with Vista for the most part.

Yes, turn off permissions crap immediately. It has the potential to hijack your PC, and it's horrifyingly retarded.

ATi's vista drivers are better than Nvidia's.

I've used Vista since it came out. My complaints:

A. UAC. It's stupid simple to turn off, so just do immediately.
B. Drivers. Not really Vista's fault, but jesus. Thankfully it's starting to shape up.

That's really about it. It's rock solid, I love the new search, all the media center crap is useful, Aero makes the GUI run a helluva lot smoother (especially under load), Windows Update is a lot better, and it just feels more complete.

You will also have to spend 20-40$ on codecs if you want to watch DVDs in vista.

If you want to use WMP and you don't have Ultimate or (maybe) Home Premium, yes, the only DVD filters for WMP are retail. But you can also use any other media player DVD software. Media Player Classic, VLC, PowerDVD, whatever.

Then you bought a codec for no reason. The DVD filter is included with Vista Home Premium and Ultimate. And you can also get free DVD filters off the net anyway.

turning UAC off is stupid.
DVDs play fine.

I havent had any problems with vista business at all.

I dunno about Vista... Why would I give up my cushy XP surroundings that I've customized and been used to for years? The only time I've had problems with XP was when my old vid card was overheating (stupid fan went out) and took the mobo with it. Technically each BSoD that happened added just a wee bit more life to that dying system.

Anyway, in everyone's opinion, what makes Vista specialer* over XP?

Actually, there's software from Microsoft that lets you import settings and configurations from XP to Vista. How well it works I don't know, but hey.

No reason to just go out and get Vista just yet, but if you're getting a new computer, you might as well.

Settings yeah... But when you're using a bunch of other customization programs in addition to windows...

Not what I meant. I'm not sure if IconPackager works under Vista, but that's something I use. I'm running LoginStudio, because I hate the XP login screen, and actually want something that's not a dialog box. I'm running ObjectDock, again, not sure if that's works under Vista yet. Then there's Samurize and Rainlendar.

I guess MOST of that might run under Vista, but I haven't been able to check. Not that it'd sway me towards wanting to run Vista ANYWAY.

Settings are one thing... years of hacks, tweaks and modded .dll files are another.

It's the exact same thing for me. I had a new rig build about a month before Vista came out. Ordered Vista right away after release, installed in 20 minutes, and I havn't had any problems with it except those that CM mentioned. It's run solid since I bought it, only restarting for updates and turned off during thunderstorms.

Umm, no? The first thing I did after I installed vista was watch a series of DVD's. No extra money required

What is the permissions system? Is it kind of like unix permissions?

Basically you have a non admin account so every time you open a program or do anything at all a window pops up to ask for permission form the user. It's probably one of the most annoying things ever.
2007-06-16, 5:49 PM #36
It is annoying. You can either turn it off or have it automatically elevate permissions for you. This is basically like having it click OK automatically. It's much better since you can still perform certain actions that require UAC to be enabled.

Turning off UAC is bad. UAC is actually a good idea although it's implementation can be improved.

Wrong again, chief. Everytime a program requires some administrative access (like change a system setting), the UAC pops up. Winamp, AIM, VS .NET, Paint .NET, Word, Access, Excel, IE, Firefox, they all do not ask the user everytime on startup.

WHAT?

UAC KEEPS your PC from being hijacked..
2007-06-16, 7:15 PM #39
UAC is a nifty way of giving you admin powers without leaving them on.

Being Administrator all the time is what makes XP so much more vulnerable.

UAC is NOT that ****ing bad. At most I look at a UAC window every other week when I'm installing a game or something.

It's not bad if you're at least halfway intelligent with your use of PCs.

A. I'm the only person who ever touches my PC.
B. I have a nice linux firewall in front of my network, so no free-roaming trojans are coming in.
C. I don't open ANY email attachments, and I don't download stupid crap (warez/porn) off the net.

So yeah, I'll take the almost-imperceptible "risk" and turn off the annoying crap, kthx.
