I just bought a TI-89 Titanium calculator and I am wondering if there is any way to make some type of rigid screen protector (something like what the TI-86 has) for it.

Yes. Keep your calculator in its cover.

...

You probably can't even use the addition function on a regular calculator..

Why did you go spend all that money on a TI-89?

It doesn't even easy button all of the work they SHOULD be making you do by hand until you get to college as well as a TI-83 because the PRESS THIS BUTTON AFTER THIS ONE interface has been replaced by drop down menus.

Why are you so anti-calculator? You sound like some sort of crazy math-hippy.

I'm not anti-calculator.

I'm pro forcing people to do and learn this **** by hand so they'll LEARN AND RETAIN THIS KNOWLEDGE. It's part of my get flogged by life before life beats you outlook.

I'm taking Calculus next year.

Any math teacher worth their salt in college won't allow graphing calculators to be used in class unless it's a class where it's necessary to get things done in a reasonable amount of time (classes like statistics or number theory for example).

Have fun failing that.

Depends on my schedule change actually.

I might end up taking AP Chemistry.

The physics dept here at GT only lets us use little scientific calculators. It sucks at first if you're used to using something bigger (TI-83, HP48G), but it is a good compromise between saving time from arithmetic and still making us solve the problems by hand.

Good luck using your TI-89. I know my math department has a policy against them for classes like calc since they can do algebraic math for you... kinda defeats the point of teaching you how to do it yourself if you can just type it in during a test and get the answer.

If a calculator can do algebraic math, I can see that would be a problem. My calculus classes when I was in high school only allowed TI-83 which can do basic graphing. It couldn't give you the answer but helped you, if you had time, check if your answer works (teachers want students to "show work", not magically arrive to an answer)

89's are mostly banned in all of my classes as well. Some classes frown upon 86's and 83's as well.

In high school and earlier I used my graphing calculator to solve everything. Now I use it for unit conversion and some arithmetic. Not being able to use it in Calc 1 brought me here, and I know a lot more math as a result.

The best use I ever got out of my TI-83 during class was programming Blackjack. Making the code for drawing the cards and symbols was fun. :neckbeard:

I was at a site downloading games onto my calculator and I found this.

This would be really cool to have. Especially during tests.

[Edit]
Never mind. I didn't see the pictures of it. What teacher wouldn't suspect two people in a class to have two identical black boxes with them.

I did the same thing on my 86; blackjack, roulette, russian roulette, slots... whole bunch of stuff.

Stop being so mean to Warlock please.

Anyway, the TI-89 is a really amazing calculator. It can do almost everything for you. And that is why most college don't let you use it.
2007-06-17, 1:28 PM #27
They let you use the 89 on the high school Calculus AP tests, which is very lame. At UA, the math and engineering departments don't have any problems with it either, but I still don't want to have it as a crutch.

The 92 is not allowed for anything because of the QWERTY keyboard set up.

Huh weird.
Where in the settings can I go to change the way my answers come out?
E.g. When I input "1/2" and press "enter" it says "1/2" All answers are in fractions.
When I input (sin 30) it says (sin 30)
Oh and when I type something like "9^99" it gives the full out answer "29512665430652752148753480226197736314359272517043832886063884637676943433478020332709411004889" instead of 2.95126654307 E94 like how my 86 does.

Dude, you really don't need more than 83/84+ for first semester/year/whatever up to BC Calc.

Unless you want to not learn how to actually do calc and let the 89 do all the symbolic differentiation and integration for you. In which case, why are you taking calc?

I bought an 89 only because my 84 broke and I was getting annoyed at having to do huge gradients by hand ... then I found out that without addon software the 89 can't do basic multivariable stuff anyways. What the hell.

If you can't figure that out just by looking at the buttons then you don't need a calculator that advanced. Especially because the button is PAINFULY OBVIOUS.
2007-06-17, 6:55 PM #31
lol@people bashing the ti-89.

yeah, sure, it can do integrals and differentiate and all that jazz, but if the teacher is smart or you are in high level classes (read: college), the ti-89 won't help you get the answers you need. it's pretty obvious none of you are engineers .

however, i do agree that the 89 should be banned from use during the AP and high school calc tests, though there are definitely integrals out there that the 89 cant compute, and most calc tests are "word problems" anyway where the major step is to actually set up the correct integrals.

in the big picture, the ti-89 is a great time saver. unless you are going into mathematics, most problems involving math are about the set-up of the solution rather than actually chugging out the integrals.

If it's so obvious Rob, then tell me how do I change the configurations in the settings.

And sheesh, why is everyone bashing at the TI-89? It's something I bought with MY money not yours. In your opinion, the TI-89 sucks. In mine, it's just a calculator to save me time.

It's not even a configuration numbnuts.

IT'S A ****ING BUTTON, MARKED WITH A FAIRLY COMMON MATHMATIC SYMBOL.

I think the general opinion of everyone isn't that the TI-89 sucks, but that the reason you are using it sucks.

Hey.

I think my opinion is that warlockmish is stupid and should be forced to learn instead of being allowed a fancy toy that does the majority of his work for him.

Try using a period inside of stuff, like 1./2 or sin(30.).

You don't even need to do that.

Rob you're being a dumb ***. He's asking for a way to change the configuration for how the answers show up, not for a button to do whatever. You really are being a dick. If Warlock's apparent "stupidity" bothers you so much that you have to complain about it on the forums AND in the chat, then please just ****ing put him on ignore and spare the rest of us from your ignorant commentary.
2007-06-17, 8:07 PM #40
IT ISN'T A ****ING CONFIGURATION. THERE ISN'T EVEN A ****ING CONFIGURATION LIKE THAT ON THE TI-89 TO MY KNOWLEDGE.

It's A BUTTON with a LABEL that is a COMMON MATHMATICAL SYMBOL. ONE YOU SHOULD KNOW. THE KIND YOU SHOULD HAVE LEARNED IN LIKE SIXTH GRADE.
