THAT VIDEO CARD SUCKS. www.cdw.com get an X800 XT. It's expensive, but it's worth it. That video card won't play anything new coming out well at all.

Umm, no, that's a sucky card, heh.

That's the budget card of that generation of cards.

They get outperformed by TI 4200's even. They really are awful cards.

An X800 XT is brand new, a generation ahead in technology, and at the top of it's line. They are nowhere near "the same thing." While paying $400-$500 for one may not be the best thing to do, there's a reason it costs that much.
2004-07-19, 9:14 AM #44
It's not Name Brand it's higher performance. Dude when it comes to computers, trust the people that know. Because otherwise you'll get fooled by flashy numbers. I'm someone that knows. The X800 or the 6800 will be MUCH MUCH better for you, ask ANYONE.

...or you could just get a 9600, 9700 or 9800, for as low as $150.

Also, Liteon > Samsung? Heh, it's probably all made by the same company anyway.

But why get those when they perform crappily compared to the X800 and he has the money to burn?

Fine, but DON'T get the 5200. If you want a good card for cheaper--9800 pro. 9600XT if you just MUST go low price, but I'd at least stick with the 9800 pro. And regardless of what anyone says, don't rule out Sapphire.

And probably made in the same country with the same parts. The quality of the product is probably the only difference, otherwise they're probably identical.

Can I use the word probably any more? ... Probably...

With a P4, I would have gone with 1 GB of RAMBUS (awaiting criticism), and an X800 XT. If I were only going to get an 80GB HD, I'd go for the RAPTOR (you'd really appreciate the extra rpm's (10,000 vs 7,200). Besides that, everything else looks good.

Sprial, for $1000 you can have ALOT better of a system than what you posted, IMO. Something I do on the side is design machines for friends of mine. If you give me a price range and one week, I guarantee I can come up with a rig you'll be more than happy with. And if you don't trust my judgement, I can post all the links to the products here with prices so other people can sound off on what they think.

Hehehe, I've dug up an old video card.

ATI VGA Wonder+ 28800-4.

Very first card I had, came with my 386. Maybe I should use it in my new compy. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

That's still probably better than my VIA onboard chipset.

it took literally a day to find drivers for the VIA Unichrome chipset.

Why in the world would you spend so much more to get the x800 when, for one, games won't be taking advantage of it's capabilities for a year or so? And even then, all those will do is make the 9800 work harder. The 9800 pro is sex, and it's good and cheap.

I can't believe you're paying 1000 dollars for THAT computer. Your friend obviously just puts parts together, because even I, a very inexperienced person with this sort of thing, can see how crappy that computer is. The specs are maybe a year, or 2 years up on my '98 HP. ONE NINE NINE EIGHT. Just go to ibuypower.com and click on the gamer FX template, then up the sound, graphics, and the ram and you'll be fine, and a whole lot more bang for your buck. Just... wait before you buy. They have random sales, and you can probably find even more sales coupons if you looked in the right places. I was able to get a 2000 dollar computer down to 1400, and all I did was check it again the next day.

The X800 will have its power taken advantage of by Doom 3, which comes out in 14 days, Half-Life 2, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Trust me, it's worth the money. 16xAA and 6xAF makes it all better.

The 9800 pales in comparison.

Bah. I plan to be just happy with my Radeon 9600 Pro XT when it arrives next week. It beats the crap out of what I'm using now, and I'm not planning on purchasing any graphically intensive games in the near future. They all cost to damned much in my opinion and none of them have really grabbed my attention. I don't game as much as I used to... Not by a long shot.

HL2 will work better on the 9800. That's even what the company said. It was made specifically for the 9800.

The 9800 is still a great card, as is the 9600. Both run any game at amazing detail levels. Not everyone here comes from a family that can afford an outrageously expensive video card for their birthday. We ALL know you're getting a X800, and everything else is crap. STFU already.

Ditto, and Mad, wtf is up with you? I didn't say anything about me getting one, I'm trying to convince my man here that he should if he has the cash to. It's worth it.

And there's no way in HELL HL2 will run better on a 9800.

And with the X800 it's not just about running games at high detail--it's about running games at high detail with highest AA and AF possible.

Like running games at the highest AA and AF is required to actually enjoy the game. The 9600XT is not only a couple hundred dollars cheaper, it will also run HL2, Doom 3 et al. What more do you really need? I mean, whenever DX10 comes out, we'll all have to buy new cards again.

1--the 9600XT will not run Doom 3 on highest resolution/detail

2--have you ever seen the difference AA and AF can make in a game?

3--It's DX9.0c

As far as raw power goes, the X800 is quite a bit nicer than the 9800:

It could heighten ones enjoyment. It all comes down to how serious one is about their gaming experience.

Fixed. A game's graphics don't have to be uber-smooth to make your gaming experience enjoyable. Just look at how many people enjoy JK.

Wouldn't it depend on the individual? I would think so. Also, eye-candy can heighten ones enjoyment. I really don't see why you're unable to grasp the connection between eye-candy and enjoyment. As I've already implied, you don't need it, but "it could heighten ones enjoyment." The key word there is "could".

A game looks a LOT better at 1600x1200 full detail at the very least 2xAA 4xAF, than it does 1024x768, medium detail, and no AA or AF.

Now I'm sorry, but if I have 3000 dollars to spend on a computer, I'm going to be putting in parts that will last me a long time. That includes an FX-51/3, a gig of PC3200 at least, and an X800 or 6800. I'm trying to give advice to this guy so he won't have to end up upgrading in the next few months to a year. Why buy a video card that's going to be outdated soon when you can buy one that's going to be running games at max detail for a LONG time, and games at medium detail even longer after that.

I am a graphics junkie, and frankly I could care less about AA, AF. They just kill performance, and in my opinion dont do a whole lot for the scene. Don't get me wrong, jaggies suck, but It is not worth the performance drop, and looks pretty damn good with them off anyway. If there is anything you need on, it is Vsync [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

OMG somebody agrees with me. Thank you [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

My Radeon 7500 lasted me 2 years. I paid under 100$ CAD for it at the time. I just replaced it with a 9600XT. It'll last me 2 years. Total cost: less than a X800. When I'm done with it I'll replace it. That way I always have something recent, just not cutting-edge. I mean my monitor sucks at 1600x1200, why the hell would I want to play a game at that resolution? Besides, you hardly even notice the jaggies unless you stand still.

Anyways...

Unreal's scheduled release date is December 2005. That gives me a year and a half. And the latest gfx cards will only play it crappily, and not as incredibly as you say it will.

Quote:
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Originally from here:
In fact, the just-released GeForce 6800 is the first video card that runs the engine acceptably -- at about 25 to 30 frames per second. "Not incredibly fast," said Sweeney, but he has his eyes on the generation of cards after it. "You'll see PC games starting to ship with UE3 in early 2006," he said.</font>
Guess your X800 will be old news by the time Unreal 3 is out. It'll be the bare minimum to play the game.

Quote:
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Thankfully, cards capable of running such an advanced engine should be a lot cheaper by then.</font>
That's why I'm waiting two years before upgrading to something more powerful. There's no use in getting an incredibly expensive card while trying to foresee for future games - by the time they come out, better and cheaper cards are on the market.

I didn't say you wouldn't. Besides the Unreal 3 engine isn't made for UT or any other game in the series.

You just said the 9600xt would run it crappily, which is a lie. It won't run it at all.
