.AAC and .MP3

On my iPod there are 14 songs out of 1,264 that I've never listened to in the 7 months that I've had it. I listen to music all the time.

It was a matter of convenience for me. Why carry around a 10-lb. case of CD's and having to switch them out for every other song when I could put all of my cd's, plus a bunch of other stuff, on a 2x4x.5 inch box that weighs less than 2 cds? Exactly.

When I bought my Soney D-NE510, I was considering getting a MP3 player but thought a CD player that can play MP3s would be better. I don't have that many downloaded songs anyway. Using the Sony ATRAC format, I can put ~400 CD-quality songs on one CDR. Thats about 30 full albums. The discman is as light as a iPOD but its larger for obvious reasons. It also costs about 1/6 as much of the iPOD.

The BEST part about my discman is the 80 hour battery life. It runs on normal AAs. I haven't timed it but judging by how much playtime regular Superstore no name batteries provide, I trust that 80 hour claim.

The only downside is that it takes forever to burn one ATRAC CD if you want to burn whole albums onto it because it takes ~8 minutes to read each album.

And that kids, is exactly what I meant. Thank you for proving that point. Diskman > iPod

You hit the nail on the head. It's functionality simply does not justify the high cost. I'm surprised at the number of people who seem to think they depend on their iPods.

Swtiching CD's really doesn't take that much effort, and if you want a variety on one disc, BURN A MIX. Schming, I have a hard time believing that you would honestly switch CD's after each song if you wanted a variety. I also seriously doubt that your CD wallet weighs 10 pounds, unless you special order CD's made of lead.

Do you carry CD's with you when you're jogging? How about when you're on the bus, or in a friend's car, or something of that nature? The iPod, using .mp3, this is the 20 gb version, can hold over 340 albums, on average. Now i have a 4.7 gb collection of MP3s, and I'm a LIGHTWEIGHT compared to some--I know people with terrabyte RAIDs just FOR their MP3 collection. The storage ability definitely justifies the cost. Just not for you. See I love how people state their opinion as fact

I wonder how many people have actually listened to a terabytes worth of music. Most people who have that amount of music are merely hoarders, they have it because they like having complete collections.

I very much doubt that many people listen to that quantity of music on a regular basic. Personally, a 512mb mp3 player would do me just fine. The Creative MuVo range looks quite nice to me, and pretty reasonably priced.

And we all listen to 340 albums everytime we leave the house. With a CD MP3 player, you fit 150-200 songs on one CD. Enough for me to go to Toronto without hearing the same song twice. Enough for me not to have to carry other CD's around. For a quarter of the cost of an iPod, if that.

But you see you have to burn different CDs, or if a song you want is on ANOTHER CD you have to switch it. And Detty--he listened to quite a bit of it, just not often. Then he lost it all to a headcrash and file corruption. Trust me he was MAD.

I can see where kirby and the others are coming from, but I wouldn't give up my iPod for anything.

Like Schming, I bought one largely for convienience. I have a relatively large lawn mowing business (well, only 14 yards, but for essentially one person, it's pretty big), and when I'm walking behind a lawnmower for about 3-4 hours a day, my iPod is a lifesaver. I can just stick it in my pocket, and I don't have to worry about it again.

Also, it's alot easier to use while driving. I can find quite literally any song on my iPod within seconds, with no changing discs or other things to distract me from driving.

I've got an .mp3 cd player and while it is pretty nifty(very nifty even), I oftentimes find myself not being able to fit all the music I want onto one cd. And it takes a really long time to burn an .mp3 cdrw for me. Personally, I'd be better suited with an hard drive mp3 player.

I got a 256mb MP3 player because I wanted to try the highest-end storage type, that is, flash memory. It's pretty slick, and it definitly carries enough music for one outing anyways. I rarely listen to more than 3 hours worth of music everytime I leave my house, and changing what is on it takes seconds, so storage isn't really a factor to me. If I had bought an iPod, I would still only be listening to the same amount of music, but I would have paid double the price and the iPod is larger/heavier :P

Indeed Detty, those look pretty good.

I think some of Creative and Rio's can do Vorbis after a firmware update, and the newer models probably support it natively. There's no way I'd get a portable music player without that.

To the people who talk about taking one CD with you before you leave the house or some other mugglery:

Have you ever been listening to an album/song and then just had the urge to switch to a completely random song while listening to that other song? I do that ALL the time. My iPod doesnt skip, I dont have to change CD's, and it automatically updates any new songs I add to iTunes whenever I plug it in. Being able to create playlists on the go is a HUGE plus.

Being able to listen to music AND read directions to get to some random place helps (you can upload any .txt file onto an iPod and read it onscreen).

Plus, it plays breakout, parachutes, music quiz, and I just heard they're releasing a new game.

The Rio Karma plays MP3, WMA, OGG Vorbis, and FLAC without a firmware upgrade (though a firmware upgrade should definitely be done). Iriver's can play OGG Vorbis with a firmware upgrade. I don't think Creative players can handle Vorbis.

Currently, I encode to FLAC and transcode to OGG with a quality of 6. OGG sounds great, though it does take a small hit on the battery. However, it still manages to get over ten hours of play.

I have urges to play songs of different types all the time. That is why most of my MIX CDs contain folders with each folder corresponding to different types of music. My discman does not have as many functions as an iPOD but it does allow me to put songs/albums in folders so its easy to scroll through them, which is good enough for me. I have friends with iPODs but I couldn't justify the cost. Although I am glad that some people can justify the cost because it makes these "obsolete" devices called CD/MP3 players cheaper.

BTW my Discman doesn't skip either. I forgot how much buffering it has but I would have to be trying hard to make it skip before it does.

Also, if these iPOD games are anything like cellphone games....yeah, I'll pass.

Also, regarding changing CDs, I just make myself feel better and remember that I don't have to recharge my discman every 8 hours [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

I've got a 3rd Generation iPod (has the clickwheel), and i don't seem to really have that much of a problem with the battery, although i don't leave the backlight on 24/7.

Tell me Whelly, how is you battery about to die permanantly?

Although the iPod is the best purchase I've made in a long time, the battery leaves a lot to be desired. They say that the battery can't hold a charge after one and a half years, which isn't a big deal if you bought a warranty (which I did). When it dies, I can swap it for a new model, which I plan to do.

I have the 20gb model and will admit to not having listened to every single song on the ipod since I have transfered them over, I have about 10gb's worth of music.

But I have about 5gb's of the ipod taken up with important exe's, files, uni work and any other stuff that when I reformat I want to keep. Theres no hasle burning cd's each time i reformat for new stuff I have, its a hell of a lot quicker moving stuff across and a lot easy.

I use the ipod for music all the time, when I'm rowing/in the gym/running/walking to uni/in lectures in uni when I'm bored [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif] and sometimes I even forget I have the thing in my pocket half the time because of its size....its smaller than my phone, although thats because I have a nokia 7650, brick with a camera....

maybe the ipod range is slightly over priced for what it is, but it looks great, has many more features than just that of a music player and there is no battery problem unless you charge it each day, which is stupid, who here charges their phone battery each day??? no one I would have a guess, same type of battery in the ipod, treat it right and it will last years, be stupid and it won't.

I love my ipod and the only thing thats close to equalling it is the creative zen.

Same goes for me. I've got a stick mp3 player that weighs less than my 58g mobile phone, holds enough music for a good day's listening (for me), and it's usb compatible, so it's easy to switch my music over on a morning before I leave the house. Oh, and it runs on 1 AAA which in my experience lasts about 15 hours on cheapos. The duracells are about to be tested though... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I bought a 3rd Gen 20Gb about three weeks ago, and I was able to convince Apple to give me a price adjustment. So, with the money i got back today, went down to the store, got an Applecare warantee, the iTrip Fm transmitter, and an iSkin. The warantee should cover me until the 5th gen, and it covers the battery so even it does crap out on me, just send it in. Very very happy.

I'm assuming that you're running a first-generation iPod then. I havn't heard about this happening with th 3rd Generation yet. If it does, suffice it to say that i won't be happy. Maybe i'll go and buy a Sony Network Walkman HD1

iPod. One of many things on my list of items to purchase.

I have to say that I'm with many of the others above. CDs are a pain to deal with on the go. For the last 4 years, I've been taking my CD player and CDs with my to school every day. I walked to and from school, so that gave me something to do. Those items alone ate a nice little portion of my backpack. Then there is the dealing with CDs after school when I go to walk home.

I could carry an iPod in my pocket all day, forego the CDs as I can fit my entire current collection of music on one, and easily pull it out and change songs on the walk home.

I find that more convient.

Now after I buy my computer, preorder Halo 2, buy an XBox, and wait a few months for enough money for a flat panel monitor, I might have enough left over for one. So much to buy, so little money.

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Regarding Apple's competitors, it suffices to say that there are few people on the planet who would pick Dell's or Creative's 20 gigabyte products over the iPod, even at a $20-30 discount. Their interfaces, screens, components, and customer service frequently leave something to be desired, and the iPod's a no brainer choice over each for nearly the same price. While the Creative Zen Xtra's 40 gigabytes represent a far stronger value equation on paper, it's substantially larger than the iPod in a physical sense, has less intuitive controls, and has a history of lock-ups and hard disk issues. Finally, though iRiver's aforementioned devices have some interesting features that may appeal to certain types of users, their prices are now the same as the iPods, their menus are more difficult to navigate, and the feature differences will only matter to serious techies.</font>
