Funeral music

Every now and then, I'll hear a song and think, "Wow, I want that played at my funeral." After hearing "Into The West" from Return of the King, I had that thought again.

Lyrics:

Quote:
Lay down
Your sweet and weary head
Night is falling
You have come to journey's end

Sleep now
Dream--of the ones who came before
They are calling
From across a distant shore

Why do you weep?
What are those tears upon your face?
Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away

Safe in my arms
You're only sleeping

What can you see
On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?

Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come
To carry you home

And all will turn to silver glass
A light on the water
All souls pass

Hope fades
Into the world of night
Through shadows falling
Out of memory and time

Don't say
We have come now to the end
White shores are calling
You and I will meet again

And you'll be here in my arms
Just sleeping

What can you see
On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?

Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come
To carry you home

And all will turn to silver glass
A light on the water
Grey ships pass
Into the West

Anyone else have morbid thoughts like this or am I becoming emo?

You know, we actually have had a lot of these threads... luckily I don't remember what I said back then, but I guess it had something to do with the Hymn of the Soviet Union.

Don't worry, I doubt you're the only person who's thought of suicide whilst sitting with their wife :P

I want Over the Hills and Far Away by Led Zeppelin to play at my funeral. And a bunch of other assorted amazing, moving, or lighthearted music. None of this dirge bull****.

Thats sounds a lot like the song sung in the credits of ROTK. At least thats what I want played when I die. Makes me cry every time.

Why would anyone want to play something morbid at their funeral? In facts, funerals suck. They're parades of self-pity. "Oh my God, life is going to suck for me so much without him/her. Let's go listen to some depressing music to make us feel even worse."

I find this music happy and to make people realize that I am at peace now. This is probably the best song I could choose for my funeral.

Ramones - Glad To See You Go

Quote:
Gonna take a chance on her
One bullet in the cylinder
And in a moment of passion
Get the glory like Charles Manson.
Gonna smile, I'm gonna laugh
you're gonna get a blood bath
And in a moment of passion
Get the glory like Charles Manson.
You gotta go go go go goodbye
Glad to see you go go go go goodbye.
Now I know the score
I don't need you anymore
Don't want you cause you're a bore.
I need somebody good
I need a miracle
Should I take a chance on her?
One bullet in the cylinder.
Gonna smile, I'm gonna laugh
They're gonna want my autograph
And in a moment of passion
Get the glory like Charles Manson.
You gotta go go go go goodbye
Glad to see you go go go go goodbye
Goodbye
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

some tune i really like, preferably with completely meaningless lyrics... i ****ing hate when people go for meaning in the lyrics.
2007-07-02, 12:51 PM #16
Yeah. I want Going Underground by The Jam.
nope.
2007-07-02, 12:52 PM #17
Going for meaning in lyrics is fine, as long as you don't delude yourself into thinking the meaning you find exists anywhere but between you and the song, in your mind. When I see meaning in lyrics, I know that it's just me, and it's not necessarily seen by others, nor should it be, and nor does it probably have much in common with what the writer was thinking.:)

Jokingly - Fire: Crazy world of Arthur Brown

Really: These are the Days of our Lives by Queen

Lyrics:

Sometimes I get to feelin'
I was back in the old days - long ago
When we were kids when we were young
Thing seemed so perfect - you know
The days were endless we were crazy we were young
The sun was always shinin' - we just lived for fun
Sometimes it seems like lately - I just don't know
The rest of my life's been just a show

Those were the days of our lives
The bad things in life were so few
Those days are all gone now but one thing is true
When I look and I find I still love you

You cant turn back the clock you cant turn back the tide
Ain't that a shame
Id like to go back one time on a roller coaster ride
When life was just a game
No use in sitting and thinkin' on what you did
When you can lay back and enjoy it through your kids
Sometimes it seems like lately - I just don't know
Better sit back and go with the flow

Cos these are the days of our lives
They've flown in the swiftness of time
These days are all gone now but some things remain
When I look and I find no change

Those were the days of our lives - yeah
The bad things in life were so few
Those days are all gone now but one things still true
When I look and I find
I still love you

I still love you

Hahahaha. Awesome.

I'd pick "Monkey Gone to Heaven" by the Pixies for my funeral. If I had to pick something more traditional, I'd choose the hymn "Be Thou My Vision"--not because of any particular meaning, but because it has such a beautiful melody.

If you're under 40 and die over here you're pretty much obligated to have Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye played at your funeral.

This is our last goodbye
I hate to feel the love between us die
But it's over
Just hear this and then i'll go
You gave me more to live for
More than you'll ever know

This is our last embrace
Must I dream and always see your face
Why can't we overcome this wall
Well, maybe it's just because i didn't know you at all

Kiss me, please kiss me
But kiss me out of desire, babe, and not consolation
You know it makes me so angry 'cause i know that in time
I'll only make you cry, this is our last goodbye

Did you say "no, this can't happen to me,"
And did you rush to the phone to call
Was there a voice unkind in the back of your mind
Saying maybe you didn't know him at all
You didn't know him at all, oh, you didn't know

Well, the bells out in the church tower chime
Burning clues into this heart of mine
Thinking so hard on her soft eyes and the memories
Offer signs that it's over... it's over

To actually answer the question, I'd quite like Going Home by Dire Straits. It's quite a slow song to begin with, which would give the attendees a few minutes of reflection, and then when my body is actually cremated it'd be timed to coincide with the more upbeat ending. It's an instrumental, so no lyrics to post.
2007-07-02, 3:24 PM #22
I love the concept of a New Orleans jazz funeral, but what I find most comforting it the thought of being buried under a tree in a meadow somewhere out in the country, with no music playing other than the rustle of the leaves and the grass.
Dreams of a dreamer from afar to a fardreamer.

nope.

Well, if you dig up that thread we had a while back about funeral arrangements, I posted a similar response. I'm just being consistent. But if you must know, Dire Straits are my favourite band and Mark Knopfler is God of Music in my world :P

Wanna share a funeral?

Because I think multiple dead Massassians doing the Thriller dance might cause the world to collapse. Hell, multiple live ones would do it..

Zombie Jamboree
by Rockapella

Lyrics:

Hey, Back to back, ha ha ha ha, hey, belly to belly
Yes my friends
Hey, Back to back, ha ha ha ha, hey, belly to belly

It was a zombie jamboree
Took place in the New York cemetery
Oh, it was a zombie jamboree
Took place in the New York cemetery

Zombies from all parts of the island
Some of them are great Calypsonians
Since the season was carnival
They got together in bacchanal
And they were singing

Back to back, ghoul, belly to belly
Well, I don't give a damn 'cause I'm stone dead already
Back to back, oh oh oh, belly to belly
It's a zombie jamboree

One female zombie she wouldn't behave
See how's she's dancing out of the grave
In one hand she's holding a quart of rum
The other hand is knocking a conga drum

You know the lead singer starts to make his rhyme
While the other zombie is rockin' in time
One bystander, he had this to say
"It was a trip to see the zombies break away"
Shah! And they were singing

Back to back, mon, belly to belly
Well, I don't give a damn 'cause I'm stone dead already
Back to back, oh, belly to belly
It's a zombie jamboree

And they were singing
Back to back, mon, belly to belly
Well, I don't give a damn 'cause I'm stone dead already
Oh, back to back, oh oh oh, belly to belly
It's a zombie jamboree

Hey hey, back to back, everyone we sing, back to back
And belly to belly then back to back
One two three four

Hey, what a zombie jamboree
From Times Square to the Statue of Liberty
Uptown, downtown zombie jamboree
Whoa whoa whoa, yeah yeah

There's a high-wire zombie 'tween the World Trades
A King Kong zombie on the Empire State
But the biggest zombies Tokyo to Rome
The zombies who call the city home

Hah, what they do, huh

Back to back, ghoul, belly to belly
Well, I don't give a damn 'cause I'm stone dead already
Back to back, oh oh oh, belly to belly
It's a zombie jamboree

And they were singing
Back to back, mon, belly to belly
But I don't give a damn 'cause I'm stone dead already
Back to back, ha ha, belly to belly
It's a zombie jamboree

I need the chorus
Back to back, ghoul, belly to belly
Well, I don't give a damn 'cause I'm stone dead already, yeah
Back to back, mon, belly to belly
It's a zombie jamboree

Back to back, hey
Back to back, mon, belly to belly
Well, I don't give a damn 'cause I'm stone dead already
Back to back, ha, belly to belly
It's a zombie jamboree

Sing the chorus
Back to back, whoah, belly to belly
Well, I don't give a damn 'cause I'm stone dead already
Back to back, ha ha, belly to belly
It's a zombie jamboree

Do the limbo
Back to back to back to back to belly
I don't give a damn 'cause I'm stone dead already
Back to back, mon, belly to belly
It's a zombie jamboree

One more time, yeah
Back to back

Slint - Washer

goodnight my love
remember me as you fall to sleep
fill your pockets with the dust and the memories
that rises from the shoes on my feet
I won't be back here
though we may meet again

I know it's dark outside
don't be afraid
everytime I ever cried from fear
was just a mistake that I made
wash yourself in your tears
and build your church
on the strength of your fear

Please
Listen to me
Don't let go
Don't let this desperate moonlight leave me
with your empty pillow
Promise me
the sun will rise again

I too am tired now
Embracing thoughts
of tonight's dreamless sleep
My head is empty
My toes are warm
I am safe from harm

Probably something from Manowar that has to do with Valhalla.

Fun fact: 90% of Manowar is about Valhalla.

Yeah, something about Valhalla would be nice too. That's like the ideal heaven. But anyways, looking back on my previous post, this remix would do even better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgO3RGYJQxA&mode=related&search= Also, there must be beautiful naked (or minimum topless) women dancing.

The Doors - The End
