I'm getting a tattoo
2007-07-07, 2:50 AM #1
I'm almost certain I'm going to get a tattoo, but I'm having a hard time deciding where, and in what font.

The words I want to get are simple, but rather important to me

"Don't Settle."

I want it someplace I'm going to be able to read it often, but I don't really want it to be too attention whoring. I was thinking up my right wrist, but I'm open to all serious suggestions.

And lastly, I'm not really sure what font I want it in. It should be a simple but slick font, since you know, it's going on my ****ing skin forever. PLEASE post an IMAGE of the phrase in your suggested font, if you could?

If I convince myself to do this, I'm going to videotape the entire process of me bawling my eyes out while he runs a little needle across my skin.

It doesn't really hurt that much. Depends on where you get it, though, of course.

I'll say this for your benefit--a typical, decent tattoo artist is going to put his/her own spin on your design. Be somewhat open to minor variations.

Oh, totally. I have complete faith in this guy, and he might suggest a font that I like too. I'm really not too picky, I just want it to look good.

Don't tell me that you're going to be ironic and just settle on any old font :D

Click on the second picture from the left (the "lettering" tab), then scroll to the right to the "I wish I" tattoo.

I've always loved that style. He's a great artist too if you're ever in Chicago.

You know what font I ALWAYS thought would be AWESOME for a tatoo?

I'd go for 'never settle' instead of 'don't settle'... it's more stoic and final, and it doesn't involve a contraction ;) sounds more like a maxim and less like a reminder note

Hey, I thought of an even better binary alphabet system!

0 = 't'
1 = wildcard

You should print it out and leave it on your wall for atleast a year before you go get a tattoo.

Also, you may have special concerns in regards to ink. Might want to ask about that.

I just want to know what font and where you think I should have it. I'm not getting it if it isn't "don't settle" and I am not getting it in any other language.

In my opinion, somewhere other than the wrist. I personally think it's better to have a tattoo that really means something to you that people don't see all the time. It seems to become more of a showpiece when it's in a place that is that visible...it's more private and special when you get it just for yourself, not to look cool or show off a tattoo.

My 2 cents.

But it's also something I always want to keep in mind. My entire reason for getting this tattoo is that "don't settle" has always been my personal phrase that both defines me, and helps me put life into perspective. It's a reminder that I should always strive for happiness, and never settle for less than what I want. I should always try to meet my needs. As soon as I stop thinking like that, I start to have serious issues in my life. I want to solidify the concept on myself in a place that will force me to remember it.

And it's "don't settle" because "never settle" is something you say once. I don't much mind if the apostrophe breaks it up, I'm not going for an aesthetic meaning. The only aesthetics would be in the font.

Illegible script is tacky and so is wonky, helter skelter lettering.

I would think that down your inner forearm would be nice but still visible to you; wrist tattoos seem a bit overdone. If you really love how it looks, though, the fact that it's cliche is a bit irrelevant.

The back neck would be cool. Visible, but not too showy.

I don't have any suggestions for font, but as far as placement goes, do it on the interior of your arm. Either right below your elbow, not quite reaching your wrist, or right above your elbox on the interior. Of course, I don't know how much space will be an issue here, so you may even go for all along the interior of your arm.

If you don't want it to be horribly attention whoring, and can afford to have it touched up a few times before it looks perfect, I might recommend using white ink. They end up looking REALLY sharp when they're done (usually between 3 and 4 sessions), but they don't show up on first glance to a passer by.

UV ink is even better but some people have bad reactions to it. The formula is getting better, not sure how it is now.
Think while it's still legal.

I was thinking about UV ink.

It's hard to even FIND someone to do it.
