possibility of avada kedavra use (keep in mind the bad guys were still in charge and the unforgivable curses lost their unforgivable status... at least for the time... also i'd say in combat against a murdering slutbag who just nearly killed her child... use of avada kedavra could be justified)

So Neville pulls the sword out of the hat... does that mean Griphook has lost it again, or can there be multi-swords?

if you recall harry had one of those visions and saw voldy kill a bunch of goblins... one would assume this included griphook

Hm. Some of the stuff I had somewhat predicted already in 2005 after finishing The Half-Blooded Prince, some not... oh well, 'twas a good read.

Even with some oddities.

I really didn't like the scene where they break into gringotts.

Hermione asked what else Harry needed before going into Gringotts the next day.
When they were preparing, Harry said "we're going to need wands. Lots of Wands."

...
The next day:

Harry went through the magic-detector at the entrance, it beeped, the guy asked "do you have any magical items, loose wands, things like that," and Harry opened up his jacked to show about 1000 wands strapped to his body and the inside of his jacket.

Then harry hit the guy in the chest, and as he flew toward the ground, he pulled out two wands, one in each hand, and shot the two goblins to his sides. Then Hermione came up behind him and attacked another Goblin. After this, Hermione grabbed the black case that went through the magic detector, opened it, and the Goblin that helped them break in jumped out and said "follow me."

... And then later, while they were escaping with the horcrux/cup.

Harry had one hand on a dragon scale, and Ron was in his other hand, as the Dragon started falling/semi-spinning toward the ground, Harry looked for a place to Drop Ron. When they finally were over the lake, he let go. Then Harry Jumped. Then Hermione tried to jump, twisted, and shot the part of her cloak that was attached/caught on a dragon scale, and jumped off. The dragon then crashed into the nearby beach, and blew up.

It just seemed so cliched.

Yeah, but not like every other story ever put to paper by humankind.

Kirby, Jesus ****ing Christ, stop trolling.
2007-07-27, 12:24 PM #89
I'm not trolling. If you like HP, you like HP. That's like how I enjoy Buffy, and Lonelygirl. None of these are high art, but they're still enjoyable. You'd be hard pressed to ignore HP's obvious retellings of Norse mythology, Grim tales, and modern films. And it's rather different from other stories in the sense that it's intentionally contrived, and obviously ripped off. The Matrix is a Jesus story, but it's still got it's own elements and motifs that make it very much a unique tale. Harry Potter, however, is only unique in that it continuously borrows from other stories.

Yeah, but I don't go into Buffy threads constantly and make seemingly innocuous insults against Buffy.

And Harry Potter doesn't borrow as much as you claim. Oh sure, it's set against a typical magical world with dragons and wizards and goblins, but aside from that it's pretty unique.

Harry Potter is taking the idea that mythology never went away. That even in the modern world dragons and **** exist like they did in olden times. Its not a retelling, its a continuation

No, you need to realize how literally she uses mythology/stories in the books. Now Harry is Jesus. Now harry is homer. Now he's midas.

and what difference will that make to a 11 year old that has never heard of Homer or Midas?

if anything it will introduce those ideas to them that make those stories more appealing

While I personally think it's trite and annoying, it's not necessarily a bad thing, don't get me wrong. I just think it's funny when people comment on it.

i think it's funny when someone enters a thread about a topic they obviously don't like and instead of doing the intelligent thing and ignoring it... they click... then after reading they pull bonehead move #2... they click reply

that is how flamewars start people... if you aren't a fan of the topic being discussed and have nothing real to add other than "omg the writer stole her ideas from *" just move along please

I do have a problem with people who look down their noses at us lowly, pathetic Harry Potter readers. First of all, why do they even care what I like to read, second, they're really not any better than us are, and are proving themselves more pathetic by taking the cheap and easy shots just because they feel insecure.

No, that's not a direct reference to anyone here in particular, just an annoyance in general

I'm sorry, but when is Harry Jesus? Or Midas? and by Homer you mean Odysseus?
2007-07-28, 10:20 AM #103
What i dont understand is how harry didnt know where the elder wand was as soon as he knew who stole it from gregorovitch. i mean seriously, it took him 200 pages before he realized it and then it was too late.

Harry Potter is just a classic hero's tale. That means it has a lot of similarities to all the thousands of other hero's tales. That doesn't mean it's ripped off. It's just in the same form.

I liked that there was finally a date placed on the books. You can see from Harry's parents headstones that they died in 1981, when Harry was a little over a year old. Which means the climax in book 7 takes place in the summer of 1998.

fun stuff.
My blawgh.
2007-07-28, 6:05 PM #106
They already had the date figured out actually, but yeah...

However in the first book (1991), Dudley has a Playstation. :o

Actually, I meant Hamlet. I always call the author of the Odessy "Hamlet" and the character Hamlet "Homer."

if you wish to compare stuff in harry potter you could pull some narnia out of your *** and say harry is aslan... he willingly sacrifices himself to save another's life (in this case many lives) then comes back to kill the villain

or maybe we could stop pulling comparisons out of our asses

Also Luke gives himself up to the Empire in RotJ and then refuses to fight against stuff shot at him in a magic manner, and his mom is dead, and his dad is kind of dead, and he kind of lived under the stairs or something. Yep.

No no no, you are far from alone. In fact I have been trying to express the same thing but it just gets harder all the time to express the non signifigance and lack of awesomesauce that is my life.

Our world is painfully boring. Do not hope for a UFO, that would be far too exciting.

Lame.

Just because a person doesn't like something doesn't mean they shouldn't share their opinion.

And if some other douche reacts poorly, oh well.
