Console Sales June-July

I was bored so I counted.

PSP: 30
Nintendo DS: 49 (8 White, 26 Black, 15 Pink)
GameBoy Advance: 25 (9 Pink, 16 Black)

Playstation 2: 24 (10 Black, 17 Silver)
Playstation 3: 5
XBox 360: 18 (10 Premium, 8 Core)
Nintendo Wii: 36

By Dollar Amount:
PSP: 3100
DS: 6370
GBA: 8000

PS2: 3120
PS3: ~2600-3000
360: 6400
Wii: 9000

I'd like to say that the Wii numbers would be much higher if we could keep them stocked.

Okay. So. Fight about what console is best.

...You sold more PS2s than PS3s?

Ouch.
nope.

I like how PS2s sold more than PS3s. How well did the Gamecube sell?

Probably not at all.

Unless you count each wii has a gamecube... :P

PS2 has continued to perform better than most of the next gen consoles (with the exception of the Wii I think) for awhile now.

Nice to see the DS looking pretty.

I like how some thought the PSP was going to be the death knell for Nintendo's dominance of the handheld market. So, so happy they were wrong.

I think this comic covers the PS3/Wii bit well:

I don't know. Every day we do hardware counts, where we compare the physical count of our video game hardware and more "expensive" electronics. That's how I found out the totals. But for some reason, we don't count Gamecube anymore, so I'm not sure how they're doing. They're only $100 though, and still have a few new games coming out, so people still buy them.

PSP suffers from the same problems PS3 has. It's technically more powerful and fuller featured than it's competitors, but it's more expensive and doesn't have a lot of great games.

I would take a PSP over a DS any day because of the huge homebrew scene. Emulators (Soon even N64), PSX, game "backups". I really want one. :D

You can't say that as your reason these days. DS has plenty of homebrew

Funny thing about home brew.

Most people just want to use their system for games. I think DS sales versus PSP sales reflect this line of thought.

He never said most people prefer homebrew, Rob. He said he does. Obviously, he is in the minority. I'm pretty sure he's aware of that, and nowhere in his posts indicates otherwise.

The minority that is available on both systems now :D

There are emulators for the DS in the works for us spiffy flash card owners. Lots of homebrew media players are already available.

And unlike Sony, Nintendo isn't actively hampering homebrew efforts.

Did you know Lumines sales jumped almost 6000% after an exploit was found that allowed homebrew regardless of firmware? Yeah. Six thousand percent.

IT'S ALMOST SIX THOUSAND!!!

Not even close to the PSP scene.

And when you count games such as Portable Ops, Lumines, Wipeout, GTA:LCS and VCS and soon God of War: Chains of Prometheus...

The PSP library is fine now. People still make fun of it for no reason. At this point it's more what kinds of games you like, rather than having games to buy, and the PSP still has quite the spread (daxter, silent hill, among others).

Why can't we all just, get along?
2007-07-29, 12:40 AM #20
I think another reason that PSP is less popular is that handhelds are mostly purchased for younger gamers, and the DS is a lot more accessible.
2007-07-29, 12:40 AM #21
Why did you put a comma between just and get?

True; the PSP targets more of the college-late high school audience, which has a lot less money to spend on trivialities such as a handheld portable gaming system. The only reason iPods are so popular is because of the connection our generation (hell, almost any generation really) has with music. Thus, Apple can afford to target the older crowd.

as long as a six year old handheld based on a 17 year old system continues to outsell the PS3, i'll smile a little.

The DS's homebrew BLOWS. It requires this funky crap to get it to work, and the DS doesn't have nearly enough power to run emulators like SNES and Genesis properly.

The PSP has a homebrew program for damn near everything. It even has an SSH client now, which totally owns.

An SSH client? That almost makes me want one!

I don't understand the whole homebrew thing at all :/

Do you have "funky crap"? Do you even have a DS?

If your homebrew blows it's because your "Funky crap" blows.

So you're telling me that it doesn't require some BS adapter to get it working? I call that a load of funky crap.

And as I mentioned the DS is too slow to run some of the better homebrew software that the PSP can (for example, the DS SNES emulator cannot play Mario Kart. PSP can play it, with sound, with Wifi multiplayer.)

It does require an adapter, yes. Like I said, if your funky crap can't handle the homebrew coming out then your funky crap is more crap and less funk.

That's assuming you have funky crap and a DS and have even *TRIED* the homebrew scene. Which it sounds like you haven't and puts you in a position where you can't judge it.

The point is that it requires the stupid adapter. $$$. PSP gets the homebrew for free.

Because 20 bucks is so much money to spend. That makes the DS only 20 dollars cheaper than the PSP instead of 40. What a waste of money.

Wait.

I've never tried killing jews, does that mean I can't judge nazi's or hitler?
