The Bourne Ultimatum.
2007-08-03, 3:04 AM #1
I just got back from seeing this film. First of all, yes, there's still the "shaky camera work" as seen in Supremacy, if you're the type that whined about "getting motion sickness" during Supremacy, boohoo, don't see it, whatever. This film had some excellent action scenes, probably better than the first two combined. Literally my only beef is the conclusion seemed a tad rushed. I did enjoy how they took the ending from Supremacy and expanded upon it, making it merely the middle of this third story , and how Bourne was merely using the events of the Supremacy ending to do recon in general, not just trying to spook Landry.

Over all, I really enjoyed this film, though, I wonder if there will be yet another film, perhaps with Bourne realizing exactly what his history with Nikki was...

I haven't seen this movie yet, but just on the shaky-cam thing in the other movie, I thought it obscured the action too much sometimes. And considering it's basically an action movie, that's kind of crap.

But I loved the other ones and this one still looks awesome.

Does it have a good car chase? The one through Russia in the last one was pretty good.

As far as I know, there were only three novels to the Bourne storyline. This evidently should be last one.

No way, mangino! Casino Royale was nearly everything Bond should be. Bourne ain't bond, and bond movies shouldn't be like these... That said, if you just mean that these are just better IYO, then that's awesome :)

The shaky camera work alone is enough to turn me off from seeing it in a theater. :(

Casino Royale is very much what I think bond should be, and coincidentally, very similar to bourne.

I enjoyed the Bourne films a lot, so I'll hopefully get to see this one. That said, I wasn't a big fan of the whole camera thing, either. Particularly, the fight scene in Supremacy in the Treadstone operative's house. I guess it was supposed to make it look more violent and brawl-like, but it didn't do anything for me at all.

Amen.

I have to believe that Bond would kill me without blinking an eye. Daniel Craig made me believe that. His predecessor, forget his name, didn't.

Plus this new, raw version of Bond was amazing. The opening chase, though somewhat over the top was brilliant when they had Bond crashing through a wall. XD

There are 5 books, by the way, The Bourne Legacy and The Bourne Betrayal, however these books are not written by the original author, but they are considered canon (As much as they can be). From what I understand, though, the Bourne Ultimatum movie is really different then the books.

There was an article a while back that Matt Damon was not interested in reprising his roll in the next movie. But I think there's an extended period of time between Ultimatum and Legacy, so they could get an older actor to continue the story.

I saw the first Bourne, but never saw the second. Maybe I'll catch up.

Exactly... It was supposed to make it seem chaotic. I understand that. The problem is when you do that, it suddenly makes it VERY hard to follow what the hell is going on. I think probably the best example is the car chases. The one in Identity was pretty easy to follow. The one in Supremacy was the exact opposite, until they reached the tunnel, which is probably the best part of that chase anyway.

Not really. They both fall into pretty much the same genre.

They both have spies?

First one was awesome, and I reckon second one sucked badly. I might see this one when it comes out on DVD.
nope.

It didn't suck... it was just plagued with shaky cam and a plot that wasn't quite as good as Identity. If the director had actually used a tripod sometimes, it would've been better.

I enjoy the shaky cam too. Gives a good paranoid feel to the film, which is what I think Greengrass was going for. That nothing is exactly clear. The movie was awesome, and the flashbacks worked really nicely. I wouldn't expect another movie though, the creators actually had to struggle to get back Damon for Supremacy, let alone Ultimatum.

I didn't mind the shaky cam, didn't really notice it too much during the film to be honest... Maybe I'll go see this one tonight!

(P.S. Daniel Craig could kick Matt Damon's ***, so...)

Er, no. Bond is a sneaky, sauve and sophisticated spy. Bourne is a badass mercenary who ****s **** up. That's like saying Predator is everything Aliens should have been. It's two different stories (although ironically enough Aliens and Predator both are from the same comic) with different characters and situations. You can't expect them to be anything but similar.

Not really, Giger created the alien design and Scott liked it so much he wanted to use it in his film. The comics came later.

Yeah and James Cameron and Stan Winston came up with the Predator design on a flight to Japan in the mid 1980's. 20th Century Fox then bought the rights to the design to replace the horrible design being used in Predator at the time, and everything worked out nicely. The comics, like Roach said, came much later.

I know, but they're still from the same source pretty much. I mean hell, they find the alien on a predator ship.

Yes, that was after the introduction of the AvP comics in Predator 2, which was made something like 5-6 years after the original.

H.R. Geiger and Stan Winston are hardly the same source. That's like saying Godard and Fellini are pretty much the same type of director.

I was saying that the old bonds sucked and should've been more like Bourne, which the new bond is. Not exactly like bourne, who isn't at all suave and sexy. But like. Similar.

Moore was my favorite :(

The movie was great, I enjoyed it throughly. Out of the three movies, I like this one the best. The pacing is unrelentless as there's always something exciting going on. I think the shaky cam was used a bit too much though with especially during the car chase.

Really? I thought he said Jason Borne was one of his favorite characters that he played along with the one from the Legend of Bagger Vance I think.

Quote:

I think Nikki was romanticly involved with David Webb. There are three scenes that parallel Nikki and Marie. First one was the dining scene where she said something along the lines of him not remembering something, but she stops. The way she stares silently at him makes me wonder a bit too. Then came the scene where she holds his bloodied hands. Finally the scene where she dyes and cut her hair in a similar fashion to Marie. Actually maybe there is one more scene that parallels Marie. Borne sending her off away from him so she can be safe.

Of course I'm merely speculating. Maybe Nikki merely feels responsible for psychologically damaging David or they were friends. Julia Stiles was interviewed on some talk show, and I think someone mentioned that she hints at the romantic relationship thing. Can anyone confirm this statement?

Another question left unanswered is why Jason Borne has a soft spot for kids? In Identity, he didn't kill Wombosi because of the kids present. Later on in Identity he can be seen playing with the kids belonging to Marie's brother. Next in Supremacy we have him going out of his way to apologize to the girl whose parents he killed. I guess I could go back to my romance theory of Stiles and Webb?
2007-08-04, 9:01 PM #39
That movie was badass.

Webb had a soft spot for kids because he was a good guy. He was wrestling with his morals (even if he didn't know it) and I don't know that there was anything special about it.

That or Nikki is his daughter and the series will be wrapped up in a daytime TV drama.

I think the coolest thing about Ultimatum is that up until the phone call to Pam Landey, the film all takes place in-between Bourne's final scene in Supremacy with the Neski girl and his final phone call to Pam Landey . When he gets to the US we're finally in real-time.
