Ok, someone PLEASE teach me how to explain the fact that CRT monitors left on, waste power. It is apparent that my dad's s/o doesn't comprehend this fact. She leaves the monitor on. But here's the kicker, I change the power settings in control panel to have the monitor turn off after 20 minutes. She changes it back to 3 hours. I am not kidding you all one bit. And this has been an on going battle. I come home and I see dad's monitor left on wasting power and eating $$$. This happened yesterday too, I changed the settings, and they were changec back. I can only come to one of two conclusions. One, her mental capacity isn't what I would call typical. Two, she is doing this purposefully to anger me, or for some spiteful purpose.

I'm not doing this just because I can or I want to (sort of). I am trying to save my dad MONEY! And she is not helping me here.

Maybe she's just naturally stupid.

Is there a way to password protect the power settings?

so here's what you do. You create a superadmin account on the PC using your dad's existing Admin account. You then lower his settings to the point where he can install and run whatever software he wants, but system settings are locked. You then go through the superadmin account and set the time to whatever you want, and she's SOL on changing it back. Then they ask you why it won't work, and you say because I don't want it to work. Have GBK write a program that causes goatse to appear on the monitor when she changes the settings. That'll put a stop to things *real* quick. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Create seperate accounts for everyone and restrict her access to system settings?

Or get someone to write you a program to reset it to 20 minutes everytime the computer boots.

That would be a good idea (latter one) but the computer is hardly if ever turned off. Like I said, it operates as the fax machine. But I should do the superuser access.

I was sent these links regarding power consumption of CRT monitors and PCs. Interesting reads especially the ones from dansdata.com. I want to say that they support my claims of monitors draining power although not as much power as I suspect.

And yes I did talk to her directly about it.

I read somewhere once that with all the power wasted by monitors being left on all over the US in a year, it would total something like 11 billion kw/hour, or enough money to power a million households for a year.

It was the woman. She lives there yet my life is dictacted from there. Sorry, that's not how it works. You live here, then you have some power. But you live there, ergo no power. But I found out that dad doesn't like the monitor going off every 20 minutes so it's 2 against 1. Like I said, screw it. I'm dealing with stubbornness and ignorance, very dangerous combination. I've tried to explain to her that leaving it on is like consuming a 100W light-bulb. Soon I hope it will be financially feasable to move out. Right now it is not, much to my chagrin.

Oh well.
