Freelancer.

No, not him.

So. I'm blessed with the honor of having a 742mhz Gateway. This pretty much means I can only play games from what, pre-1998? I saw a copy of Freelancer in a Pawn Shop (and thought of Massassi first, strangely) for $6, so I bought it.

Than I played it for 13+ hours. I'm only level 12. :(

So besides that and Blood (see: Doom clone that makes DOSbox crap it's pants), I'm kinda strapped for games. I also have JK, MOTS, and Diablo II laying around.

I would totally love it if you guys could suggest games that wont make this computer expel feces from it's floppy drive.

Deus Ex, Total Annihilation, any of the older Sierra City Building games, Baldurs Gate 2, Red Alert 2, Half Life, SS2, Fallout/2, Quake 2, Morrowind might work, Homeworld, the Civ games, Forsaken, Rollercoaster Tycoon 1 or 2.

Seriously some of my favourite games are from around about then.

Freelancer is an awesome game. If you can get true DOS to work, you might want to try Crusader. It's pretty cool. Also, Fallout and/or Planescape: Torment.

I'm playing thru freelancer again right now, and as usual it's got me all hot and bothered... I have dreams about how they should make a sequel and just upgrade all the dynamics of the game to allow more freedom, better visuals, and more realistic interaction and whatnot, and I just get so worked up and hmmm mmm mmm.

Don't worry 'bout being level 12... take your time, do lots of exploring, find the awesome hidden items in far flun nebulae, and gets lots o' money, don't rush thru it.

Yeah. There's a lot of wierd stuff that's wrong with Freelancer, but overall it's a lot of fun.

You guys should get the BSG mod, (www.bsg-galactica.com), they have their own server up and it's a lot of fun. I'm DS-181-3 (and -1, -2, -4, -5... but 3's my main character) on their server (which is coincidentally called www.bsg-galactica.com)
It's still a work in progress, but they've got a lot done so far. You can pick your side, cylon or colonial, and get ships ranging from vipers, raiders, raptors, colonial 1, or even battlestars and basestars. (plus much, much more) Ok, I'm done advertising ;)

Freelancer was a great game, and used to play fine on my old 1GHz system. Not long ago I decided to dig it up from under the layer of dust and played it on my current system. It surely ran smoothly, but crashed every 30-45 mins or so. Kind of annoying, really... Still, I finished it with Rebalance Mod. Indeed, the game is 200% better with Rebalance Mod installed (though probably not on a 742MHz system as not nearly all custom models have very low lod modes enabled).

The vanilla Morrowind might run somehow on that system, but at least Blood Moon would probably be out of question. It barely ran on my 1GHz system back then. I guess switching to 800x600 might have helped but the UI becomes quite useless in resolutions below 1024x768, so that really wasn't much of an option.

Oh wow, I didn't realize that I have so many options.

Starcraft - I can't beat the first mission where you have to cloak. I fail. CD is somewhere.
Fallout - I got killed by those sand bugs. I fail. I also can't find my CD.
Civilization - I can't play them, because I win too hard.
Duke Nukem 3D - Have it. Working on the second episode.
XWA/TF/XWvTF - Have the cd somewhere, but I can't play without a joystick. It just doesn't feel right. :(
Baldur's Gate 2 - I felt the game was beat when I romanced all the women.
C&C - The only one I'm good at is Red Alert 2. D:

Thanku to all. I'll be gone for like ever because I still have to beat Freelancer. <3

I dare you to try and Romance Anomen without killing yourself. It DOES get better, but you have to put up with his "Mr. Thou" attitude for a while.

If you have Baldur's Gate I then download the BGTutu mod which lets you play it with the BG2 engine. Another good way to pump up the gameplay in BG2 is to play an evil, non-romancable character like a dwarf. Evil Dwarven Cleric <3

I heard Dark Forces 2 had a bunch of nerdy nostalgic dudes still hanging around trying to figure out if it was past its time or not.

And we still give long lost Kedri his nickels and dimes.

I think this is the first time I've seen someone here other than me actively defend that game. Well done.

My recommendations:
Fallout 1+2+Tactics
Baldur's Gate 1+2 (make sure to grab a few mods, like the NPCFlirt pack. They make the romances more interesting and add neat stuff)
Monkey Island 1+2+3. 4 might be a push.
