I have fonder memories of Privateer than Freelancer, but I can't determine whether that was just because I was young and computer games caused more endorphins to be released in my brain then or if it was actually better.

Unreal Tournament with the Nuclear Flak Rabits mod.

Best multiplayer fun I've ever had was in that game.

There's a patch that makes Privateer 2 run on XP. You might wanna try that one too.
