Metroid on Wii

Really? When I started playing, I remembered the default set-up to be Standard, and I had to manually switch to Advanced. Maybe I wasn't paying attention during that brief moment.

Should I finish the first two metroid primes before I get this one?

My settings are defaulted to "standard" but it looks like I can switch to advanced. I will try it tonight. What makes you think they removed it?

Also, are the graphics really any better than the original Metroid Prime? Seems to be the same quality to me...

I noticed more detailed backgrounds.

Then the player lays a bomb, thus destroying the enemy, but getting hit at the exact same time, and loses. F*** RIDLEY!

My main problem when I die fighting bosses is usually because I've wasted half my health figuring out how to beat it. The second time around I can get right to beating it instead of trying to figure out how. Also scanning really helps in this regard.

Also the first time on the final boss in Prime 3 I didn't realize you could stun the head by shooting the thing that pops out the underside and drops the shockwave bombs. I beat it barely with so little health left on Novice. I figured out I could stun it like this on Veteran and beat it with 1/4 my health left. When I started the battle with half health (I accidentally stood under the Leviathan pod, which hurts you A LOT, and almost died. The health that pops out of the pod when you blast it only healed me half... I got some more health from Dark Samus and found sources of health I hadn't used last time in Novice from the AU. Now I see why everyone except me thought the battle was easy the first time!

Only a little bit. The Wii is very underpowered graphically compared to 360/PS3. Although if you do look closely, you'll see a ton of detail in the level geometry. A lot of newer games will just hollow out a box and put super-high-res textures up, but every area in Corruption has elaborate brush work.

Yeah, there are more details and effects. And bloom.

I will say this. After playing it extensively (trying get it done possibly before returning it to Blockbuster), I tired of hearing about phazon. It was a cool concept in the first Prime, but damn does it get overwhelming in Prime 3. Phazon this, phazon that, phazon gun, phazon suit, phazon seeds, phazon virus, phazon enhancements, phazon energy sources, phazon pools of phazon and so forth. Then there are phazon enemies composed of phazon that require the phazon suit to shoot phazon to destroy them. There are even phazon metroids and phazon Ing (which is like the Ing in Prime 2, but composed of phazon). I think they got carried away with these goobs of radioactive blue crap.

But I love the controls. Makes exploring so much easier.

They should port the first two to Wii with the new controls.

I just got the X-Ray visor.

Is there anything on the Valhalla other than upgrades?

What's the point of ship missile upgrades?
2007-09-08, 12:23 AM #49
i would pay money for forward-ported prime 1 and 2.

You can use the command visor to order bombing runs in a few outdoor rooms.

I've never played Prime games very much, but I do enjoy them somewhat. The one problem I continuously run into though is this:

Is there ANY way to play this game other than running around in scan visor 98% of the time? I'm on Bryon or whatever that first planet is called after you get the PED (I don't think that needs to be tagged), and I was in the room right before you get the grapple/swinging thing .
It took me forever to find this one little hole in the side of a cliff, where you scan it and it goes "This wall has lots of Blahblah alloy in it." So then I tried every single one of my weapons on it to no avail, when I finally decided to go morphball and bomb it, and get through . So I wasted 20 minutes going through that room and the room before it thinking I'd broken the game, and the only way I managed to find what I needed by accident and running around in scan visor.

Go ahead, tell me I suck at Metroid, but is there any better way to play it? Because this is exactly what made me never finish 1, was I got to where I had to scan visor every room to find what I needed, and it wasn't fun.
I had a blog. It sucked.

thats the thing with metroid, you NEED to remember every little detail about things to figure out the puzzles to continue farther, thats why you can go from doing a 30 hours first playthough to a 7 hour one

Ok. I'll just have to accept that the GBA metroids are vastly different from the Prime series.

Those are more like exploration games, where you get a map, constantly run into doors you can't open and areas you can't access, then you remember them for later and come back when you finally find the right item. Same sort of deal, but it appears that this new Metroid Prime 3 has a more typical FPS set of puzzles in it.
2007-09-08, 6:38 PM #54
I'd venture to say that the GBA versions are more of 2D shooters with occasional interesting puzzles. Prime is a FPS with platforming, puzzles, and general "figure this out" with the actual shooting taking a backseat.

They're both great games, but they're still not for everyone. Though if I own a Wii, I would definitely pick up Prime 3.
2007-09-09, 6:37 PM #56
Yeah, I've played more, and I'm not so impressed as everyone else. It seems like a typical first person shooter with controls that are a bit better than most console controls, but still not as nice as the original Prime and definitely not as nice as a keyboard/mouse.

I did try the "advanced" thing, and it just seems more sensitive. Didn't make it any easier or harder in fights, but it did make it more annoying to just navigate the maps.

Also, since when did Samus become a lackey soldier for these federation guys instead of a bounty hunter?????
2007-09-09, 7:35 PM #57
The Prime series takes place between metroid 1 and 2.

she's always been doing a federation contract, just in the other games they haven't been giving her a guiding handler, Super metroid, 2 and 1 had none and it confused people, i guess

Prime suit did a reminder system, Fusion has Adam, P2 had the same as P1, Zero Mission had the chozo 'go here' system, and P3 has the 'good' Mother Brains telling you what to do. i can't speak for Hunters, but i suspect it does too.

the Aurora Units directing you is just the feds doing more micromanaging then the normal go and kill stuff routine

I killed Omega Ridley and I just got the Pirate codes.

Also here's a tip for fighting pirates: It doesn't work all the time, but try using the X-Ray Visor on them.
2007-09-10, 11:22 PM #60
Well I beat it. The ending doesn't really make sense. If they needed the wormhole to get to Phaaze, how did Samus return without it?

Maybe Samus is a leviathan.

Anyway, 13 hours, 72%.

Not as nice as the original Prime????
I hate the original Prime controls, worst fps controls I've encountered on a console.

In the original, you target an enemy and shoot. Your shots go right towards said enemy. In this one, you target, and then you have to aim again using the wiimote, which is too slow anyway. It always feels laggy compared to keyboard/mouse. Even on "advanced" (which would be nice to turn on "advanced" only when in "target" mode).
2007-09-11, 10:50 PM #63
It doesn't feel laggy at all to me. :/

You're saying it moves as quickly and as accurately as a mouse!? I've not seen any wii game that does that.

I'm honestly more impressed with games that use the tilt sensitivity stuff than the pointing. Maybe I need a bigger TV or something... (32 inch is what I have)

Maybe it is YOU who is lagging. :v:

Your Wii's plugged directly into your TV right?

Um, they all do that.
I haven't played MP3 yet (stupid european delays) but all the pointer games I've played using the wii so far (Red Steel, some Wii Play games, and to a lesser extent, DBZ) it has been extremely quick and responsive.

Maybe you guys who say it's as fast as a mouse use the "smooth mouse" settings and have slow framerate and low mouse sensitivity? Because there's no way in hell the wiimote is anywhere near as fast as a mouse, you've got to be kidding me. Go to wiicade.com and tell me the games are just as easy on the wii as they are in your browser. Then I will call you a dirty liar!!!
2007-09-12, 9:57 PM #71
it's slower to turn in metroid using the wii remote but for actual pointing and clicking it's faster than a mouse for me.
2007-09-13, 12:36 AM #72
The Wiimote is faster than any mouse because the pointer doesn't need to travel any distance to change it's position. But you can turn faster with a mouse because you control the actual movement and speed with the mouse. With the Wiimote you can only turn in a pre-set speed.
The flash games are harder because it's easier to hold a mouse steady.

Hmm? Did you forget about the sensitivity settings? On highest at first I couldn't get it to stay still, but I got used to it and then it was second nature.

I would still prefer a mouse because there's no problems with detection if you move the cursor off the screen too far, plus you can't lift and move a Wiimote like a mouse.

I didn't. did you forget about sensitivity and acceleration settings for a mouse? when I turn around in a pc fps I move my wrist 8 mm. when i turn around in metroid prime 3 i move my wrist 4 degrees and hold it there for whole seconds.

Yep. And wait, and wait, and wait. While someone is shooting me in the back. I feel like I'm fighting against the controls instead of fighting against the bad guys.
