iPod touch

Anyone gonna buy this thing? Comments? Apple just released a new set of iPod series gadgets, among them a new iPod touch, and a new iPod nano.

Looks stupid.
2007-09-05, 2:54 PM #3
i think they're trying to make it into a pda.

I use my iPod when I exercise. I would hate to have to look down at a screen and cover it with sweat.

$400 for a 16 gig phone-less iphone. No thanks.

Since the iPhone is $400, I think I'm just gonna get that and stick with my normal iPod with buttons.

I've been waiting for one since before the iPhone came out. So yeah, I'll gladly drop 400 bucks for it. The fact it has wifi and a browser doesn't hurt either. Though that 160 gig iPod Classic is enormously tempting. It'd make a great portable USB Drive. Buuut.... been holding out for widescreen too long not to jump for the Touch.

You have to consider that most pocket-able internet browsing devices cost a few hundred dollars. So one with multitouch and 16 GB of memory, that also happens to play MP3s really isn't too bad.

However, it's still too much for me. I'll be holding off until they're cheaper. If the iPhone were available here, it'd be much smarter to go with that. For $100 more it's a phone.

Oh, and does anyone think the new nano/shuffle colors are horrible? If you're a guy you can basically get red or silver (or black if it's a nano), that's about it. Last gen colors were way better.

I was going to save up for one, but I think I'm more likely going to drop that cash on Izzy's birthday: I can't justify such an expense seeing as how I have an ipod that functions as well as the day I bought it 3 years ago or so (and I've got a mortgage to pay :( )
2007-09-06, 12:45 AM #21
Buy her the iPod touch, convince her that the touchscreen sucks, give her your iPod in exchange for the new one and then come to the realisation that the touchscreen really sucks and that you'd rather have your own iPod back but she fell in love with it and is going to leave you to go to some weird country where she can marry the iPod and live happily ever after with lots and lots of IzPod children.

Or buy her flowers.

$400 for basically less useful stuff than I have with my now $200 Zune? How 'bout no? Sure, it looks great and all, but for $400 bucks I think they could manage to fit at least an 80GB HD in there...also web browsing on a 3' screen via wifi is retarded as you can probably nine times out of ten just go and sit (GASP!) in front of a 10-20' monitor.

In short, you are being ripped off by several hundred dollars and you don't care because you're such a tool.

They should consider a feature like "audio format support" or "not ****ty itunes" or "all DRM free music" before considering "trite touchscreen/wifi/allinone updates."

Seriously, itunes DOESN'T work on vista, and the other apps that can get videos and whatnot on my ipod are piles of **** stuffed with ****. Why are they downgrading their iphone and selling it as an ipod when they have far more important issues to tackle?

Not yet, but the psp has had a couple years to get that library built up. But since these are running a true unix os already, it won't be too hard to port some awesome stuff to it. :D

Don't use Vista? I mean, I don't use Vista, but I do have a drive with Business installed and iTunes runs just fine.

I think you audiophiles are crazy, and the formats it supports are fine too, but that's another discussion entirely.

DRM free music? Yeah. There's a crap load of solutions for that, and no, not all of them involve theft.

I like the "trite touchscreen/wifi/allinone update". It's everything the iPhone is minus the phone for people like me who don't want to pay AT&T further exorbitant sums of money for a phone plan, and who don't feel like hacking their phone to work on other networks. You can call me a tool or whatever for willingly wanting to spend 400 bucks on something you might consider worthless and full of stupid features, but I've been waiting for it a long time. I've held off buying an iPod because I wanted something like this. Also, maybe you should consider that what's a pointless stupid feature to you, is actually quite useful to someone else.

You're missing the point: $400 FOR 16GBs OF FLASH MEMORY. I'm sure you could physically buy all the parts and have them assembled for several hundred less. You are about to drop almost half a grand on something that is probably at best worth half of it's actual asking price.

We call this being ripped off, badly.

Yeah you're probably right, that leaves $170 for a Mac OS X running device with Wifi and a Multitouch screen....

I dunno - I think the lineup is pretty good. The music fan will buy the 160GB iPod classic - the toy nut (who wants a browser in his pocket) will buy the iPod touch.

I have 55GB of music so you would think the iPod classic would be perfect for me, but I have gone through a few iPods (15GB iPod; 2GB Nano; 1GB Shuffle; 4GB Nano.) The 4GB nano is serving me well, I only have it put on the music I listen to most often - I only listen to my obscure songs when I'm at my computer working on something and need background ambience.

I see what they're doing now...they make it really thin and use tiny amounts of really ****ing expensive flash memory to make it cost and absurd amount or at the very least make it seem like a complete waste of money.

[I had no idea flash memory was so damned expensive.]

know what they should have released instead of a new line of ipods?

they should have released a new mac pro, that's what
2007-09-06, 8:54 AM #36
That'll probably come next year. I think iPods are updated in the fall because of holiday purchases and Macs are usually updated in the Spring/Summer for school. I just hope they don't re-design the Mac Pro. I love the case.

I have no idea who a-data is so I would never buy that. As for the other, not a bad deal, but I looked for about 30 seconds, I was just making sure he knew flash memory is not $20 for 16gb...
