Why do people steal?
2007-09-10, 1:22 PM #1
So today I realized that I had left my Technical Writing book in my English classroom, and after extensive searching at the campus lost and found, and the classroom itself (later that day) I turned up no results. I don't have that class again until Wednesday so I'm hoping that one of my fellow classmates might have picked it up to return to me next class. I also e-mailed my professor but I haven't gotten a response yet.

I know the mistake was my own fault, but I was wondering what it is that motivates people to steal. Yes, it's still stealing if you find something that is not yours and pick it up. Finder's keepers is just bs someone made up to make themselves feel better about being a prick. How hard is it to turn something into the lost and found, or even notify your professor and have them do it. These books are really damn expensive (this particular one being $125), and having someone take it and probably just turn around and resell it to the bookstore off campus is really a slap in the face. I was wondering if I called up the bookstore that buys campus books, and asked if that specific book was sold to them today, if they'd do anything for me. Though, I doubt the person would sell it the day they found it.

Anyways, to give this thread a point, state your views on thievery, and name something you've had stolen from you recently.

Technical Writing huh?

Sounds like a class you need pretty badly.

But it looks like someone learned a lesson in personal responsibility.

Yeah I do need it, for my intended major, smart ***.

I thought you needed it because you're a horrible writer..

But I didn't need to point that out. :P

I swear you are by far one of the most ignorant members of this entire forum, and by far one of the most annoying. You act like you are completely unaware of people changing, and being different from their prior selves. I wrote a fan-fiction for a show we already know you think was one of the worst shows in existence when I was maybe 11 years old. I'm nearly 20 now, that was 9 years ago.

I just can't believe how much you get your jollies out of this stuff. I see you constantly harass people such as Gold, Axis, and many other people on this forum for things that they either said or did in the past. Get over it and move on and stop being such a thorn in everyone's side. I just can't believe that you're allowed to keep going on the way you do all the time about people. You must seriously be friends with the right people on these boards to have lasted this long.

HEY ROB YOUR SUCH A DUMB ARSEWIPE I AM GONNA WHINE AND CRY

jesus i love it when rob causes meltdowns, please people, keep getting wound up.

also when i was at leeds i found a wallet and i mailed it back to the owner, i felt pretty cool about that.

also stealing is good if you want something for free or if you really need a hit and cant afford it, so you steal something, sell it, then buy your heroin. (look on the bright side, you saved a total stranger $125)

I had a guitar stolen from me my freshmen year of college.

I had just left for class and when I got back 3 hours later my guitar was gone and I never saw it again. My roommate said he went to the bathroom shortly after I had left and when he got back the guitar was gone, he assumed I had come back and gotten it.

Kinda wish I'd pursued it when the cops asked if I thought my roommate might have done it but, being that I still had to live with him at the time, I didn't.

I've still never seen a guitar that was as good as that one.

I still miss that thing.

Last week I accidentally left my phone in the lounge building here on campus. I was lucky enough that a group of nice people found it and called my friend's phone to tell me where I left it.

There are two MAIN reasons for stealing: greed and need

One is immoral, the other is amoral.

Greed, major cause of thefts:
A person can't afford some sort of material item or service, so he finds it easy to steal it, and justifies his own actions with his incompetence. This ruins people's lives, sometimes it costs them their own lives, sometimes the thief's life is also in the toll.

Need,
A person can't fulfill a need one way or another, let us say a medication that is vital for the life of a family member, due to the pressure and to the gravity of the situation, he sees no other realistic option but to steal said medication. I wish that such situations could be eradicated, and no one would have the need to steal anymore. A las, I am just a dreamer.

Some *******s stole two crates of beer from our floor's kitchen in the halls last year. Me and a friend went around all four blocks trying to find some trace of it, but to no avail :( We got keys cut for that room shortly after.

because people like taking the easy way out. And what they like even more is free money.

But that does suck. I would not be a happy camper if someone took one of my textbooks.

Someone broke into a storage facility I was storing stuff in and stole:

Reciever for wireless mouse/keyboard
Proprietary cable for my vid card
Crappy printer that was outof ink
Webcam I got for free, but requires a cd of drivers that I still have.

Worst thief ever.

Agreed 110%. Don't worry about that B.S. "internet" excuse he keeps throwing around, it doesn't stand up to scrutiny.

Just put him on ignore for now and hope a mod does the right thing eventually.

I got scatter brained today and almost my 2 thumb drives and the key to my house in the school library. I freaking freaked when I released they were missing when I was practically on the other side of the campus. I walked my butt off as fast as I can (I brought my ghetto laptop to school today, making my bag weight like a ton, hence why I didn't run) hoping to high heaven that some dick head wouldn't see them a swipe them (I just bought a 2 GB thumb the other day for 20 bucks so I wasn't exactly eager to give that up easily). Thankfully I found them just in time before someone else did.

I was a little to my next class because of it but in community college, most professors don't care if you're late by 2 or so minutes so it was no big deal :)

My freshman year, spring semester, just two days before I was supposed to finish finals and go home for the summer, my laptop was stolen. I was living in the dorms, with a stupid roommate. He left the door unlocked on accident, which was after I had left to go to a meeting. I came back, and it was gone. From now on, I never leave my laptop unless it's locked down.

My house has been robbed 4 times. 2 of those times completely cleaned us out pretty much.

Anyway, my motto is never steal when there's a direct victim. But really I don't steal. Much.

I prefer confrontation with a dash of backstabbing in real life. So long as it serves my goals/needs/agenda. Otherwise I don't bother.

We've had a couple of thieves break in a number of years ago when we were away from the country. The geniuses then decided to leave in our car that was parked in the garage, but crashed into a nearby tree (it was right-hand drive). They then ran away, but one of them forgot his passport in the car. Yeah...

Long rant

Eh, the group of friends I have act exactly like Rob in that regard in real life. You do something stupid back in 1998? We still mention it every day.

For example, a friend bought Waverace 64 when it came out for $79 or so back when he was like, 12 or so, with his saved allowance. Now every time we talk about purchases, that is always brought up. It's just how the group works. There is no malice behind the words, it's just poking fun. We do quick fire insult matches, going through every secret and shame we know about the other person.

I mean, it kinda has benefits as well, maybe toughens you up a bit. I work in a public service field, and will invariably deal with irate and rude people. You can't get all huffy, you need to take things in stride. People have said worse things to me, face to face in real life, when I'm pretty much in charge of their care, and I brush it off. It's a handy skill, because in the end it really doesn't matter that some dude was mean to you.

It only matters when it somehow hampers your goals in some way, like a coworker balling you out in front of your superior making you look incompetent. Even then, it serves you well to deal with the situation calmly, not "you're being a big doo-doo head". I still don't get the whole "I'm mad at you over the internet" thing, because in real life it seldom matters when someone is being a prick. For your own good, thicken your skin a bit. If Rob, who we've come to expect these comments from, pisses you off here, I'm afraid to see how you'd deal with a real life confrontation.
